Betcha didn't know that the CO of No. 239 Wing, RAF, flew a Yak-9D rather than the Mustang IVs (P-51Ds) his other pilots flew.

Got more on this...absolutely fascinating!

I've read of this before...he flew a Yak because it was nicer to fly than the Mustangs. It was more in line with the Spitfire I guess.

Very interesting...I'm not very good in the Yak.

Thanks for the information!

According to Squadron/Signal's YaK Fighter in Action, the YaK 9D was the personal hack, or aircraft flown for travel, communications or pleasure (absolutley not in combat!), of James Eric Storrar, a 'commander with No. 234 Squadron', based at Treviso in northern Italy. Other pilots were rotated to fly this machine on a seniority basis. the aircraft ruptured its oil tank during a flight, and when no repairs were found possible, it waas towed to the center of the airfield and ceremonially burnt.

No mention was made of where Storrar obtained the YaK, although it is possibly one of the YaKs sent to Tri Dubii (SP?) in Yugoslavia. I picture a senior Soviet officer, laden with cases of scotch and Spam...

cheers

Yes, it could only be a hack, who would want to fly that thing with questionable parts and very hard to come by spares in combat?

actually I read the mustang was alot smoother to fly then either the spitfire or yak9 which were a very shakey ride compaired to the mustang said by British collector Rob Lamplough.

The photo chimp provided looks like testing trials since there are no other yaks in the photo and i dont see but could be wrong. Care to let us know chimp?

I would like to find some detailed tests sourced real tests in english of the russian planes in game dated and documented.

Just by control surface size similiar to the zero on ailerons, C type rudder and C type elevator surfaces would make them have very poor high speed handing but great like existing fighters with the same configuration but low speed handling.

ever since il2 sturmovik i have never seen anyone come forward with detailed russian aircraft charts of roll climb turn rate dive accelaration etc. I find it hard to believe a la5fn is able to gain 160kmph in a shallow 50-100m dive and able to maintain the speed of 680IAS at 3000m for a long time.

for example the la5 and many other russian aircraft will out accelarate the p47 190 p51 p38 in dive accelaration, But not max breakup speed.

Tri Duby is in Slovakia and no Yaks where flown from there, only LA5FN and various Slovak airforces types but no Yaks.

Ok...didn't figure on the Mustang being the nicer ride. Thanks for the clarification http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Very true on not having seen any charts. That'd be really nice to have.
