OK, I am buying a newer video card. My eyes cant stand the 17-20 FPS Im getting frmo my FX5200 any longer!

The question I have is what in the world is the difference between an ATI 9800SE, 9800 pro, and 9800XT? Why is the SE a lot cheaper than the 9800 pro?

Secondly, what is the difference between a FX5900SE, 5900 Ultra, 5900XT? The XT is the cheaper of these.

I am still not convinced I like the faded looking color of an ATI card, but I do agree the performance is better. The problem is that one could buy say an XT card and it have all that DVI and movie making crap (Which I dont need since I have an expensive breakout box for making DVD footage from any type of analog or digital device) If the main differences are added "Extras" I sure would like to know. It could save me a few (30-50 dollars).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here my current system specs (A card would help them a great deal!)

AMD XP-2500
ASUS A7V8X-X
1.5 Gig PC2700
Onboard Sound
(Thermaltake cooling all the way around)

The 9800SE is a way dumbed down version of the 9800pro. They used to sell the 9800 non pro but people were to easily overclocking them to 9800pro levels. The XT is the newest ATI flagship card. About a 10% increase in performance over the 9800pro in SOME tests.

Same basic thing for the Nvidia cards.

I still dont understand why people say the ATI cards have washed out colors. This is just not true. I think people have gotten so used to the cartoon looking digital vibrance that they forget what the actual colors should look like. Plus, ATI cards are known to be much brighter. If you just turn down the brilliance and turn up the contrast, the colors will get much richer.

The best deal right now is the 9800pro. You can get one for around $200 if you shop around.

Good Luck!

Yeah, I can surf. But the big problem here is the information you get on hardware seems to be as different as the people reporting the information.

Not to mention that one site says ATI kicks NVidia's butt, the next says something completely different. And the manufacturers sites dont even include all the differences in the cards themselves.

That's why I asked the question here. I know quite a few of the people here have experience with both manufacturers and a host of video cards.

I really didnt intend this thread to be a pissing contest, just asked for some first hand, real person information. Im sorry that bothered you so badly.

Oh, P.S. Rude people suck.

I appreciate the feedback. I was really leaning towards ATI. Although I have ALWAYS used NVidia.

A friend told me last night that NVidia's XT is their low end card, but ATI's is their higher end card. You can see how this all gets confusing.

I did see the 9800Pro on Pricewatch for $204.00 US and that's what lead to the initial question.

Thanks again!

it might have more to do with your chip than your vid card?.. 1.5 is light.

This sim is deep - 2.0 or better and lots of ram are needed 1gig or better..

oh .. 1.5 gigs of ram - and you have a decent chip too.. well I have the fx5200 and it works well for me.
