You all know that i am pretty relaxed with OT posts, but come on people, let`s not abuse it. I understand that lack of Off Topic discussion on this forum has some impact, but lets not forget that we use to have it and managed to screw it up. I will make another attempt to resurect Off Topic forum if UBI will go along with it..

Anyways, i would like to ask everyone, let`s not get carried away with OT, this is WW2 Simulation forum and let`s keep it 99.9% at that. If you have something that you cannot hold inside anymore, spill it out, but keep in mind that OT is a pretty expended subject, i will have to use my judgement on that. Don`t be suprize if i will lock it. At least try to keep it war related and not whatever comes to your mind.... to avoid the lock or even further ...things http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Cheers!

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

That beatles one was sure OT!

Actually, I thought I`d just let you know that it`s 19.15 here and the weather`s a little grey and gloomy. I`m sure it`s gonna chuck it down. Also, I just saw a sparrow pass my window. It had a particularly darker shade of brown to its feathers than most other sparrows I notice...

Ohh, there`s a pretty girl on her mobile too...

Yes I've noticed a steady increase in OT-posts lately.. actually I've posted a couple myself http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

OT-posts come from the lack of FB/PF-things to talk about.. a couple of screenshots every other week doesn't keep us content for very long http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I hope we get some videos or perhaps a demo of PF sometime soon, then the OT posts would be out of your hair for a while http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Well - easiest way IMAO is to make an Off-Topic Forum...

Or limit it to aircraft/flight related topics...

And DON'T forget the Admin is posting PF topics galore... now THAT should be stopped http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

BTW, why did Johann S. Bach's sons call him 'old wig', when they were 'old wigs', too? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Eh? Cheese! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I love cheese, I've tried more than 174 types of cheese in my life... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I think Bruce Springsteen also likes cheese... When will he release a new album? Someone knows? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Maybe after he does that trip around China. Interesting country China... with all those Chinese fields of rice... I like rice.

But, do you know what I like more than rice?

Cheese! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

But, wait, I'm getting off-topic... OK. What about Bach's sons, mmm?

They were German. And Germany was in World War II, and German pilots flew with the Luftwaffe. (*) Bach's sons didn't. They were dead yet, I think.

Udidto, just FYI, I have a life too http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif and i wanna fly and be with my family and do whatever else life offers to me, ya know...
I`m here pretty frequent but still, sometimes i miss thread or two. Just like you i love Beatles and i can talk about them all day. But seriously, look at the title of this page, what does it say? As i mentioned in initial thread, War related or flight related stuff are welcome here, as long as they contribute something. As far as all those rather unpleasent P-51 threads, i locked up, but kind of too late, since i was trying to have a nice weekend. Fair enough?

How much OT should be allowed....

As long as the topic has been raised, I enjoyed the Beatles thread. Grew up with them and their music. Some people listen to music while enjoying FB and others have taken the time to create music files for use inflight.

As a "judgement call", it was one I would not have locked. (Instead, I posted on it.)

I think the OT threads are a welcome intermission until we get something like a new patch to share opinions as long it's with respect for eachother.

These kind of threads are like television, you can shut it off yourself. In the end it's a question of demand and offer.

As for me, I find it fascinating to learn how fellow IL2 fans all over the world live their lives and think about almost anything.

ASM 1
07-12-2004, 03:31 PM
I think Ivan's post about relevance is a valid one, however the Beatles post was IMHO a harmless one - and a hundred times better than some of the "on topic" drivel that we have had to endure - Erich Hartmann thread anyone? (yes I know it was ok for about the first 6 pages) Bring back the Pilots lounge... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

To be honest I am pretty peeved with all the "best this" and "best that" posts - theres another one in the GD at the moment about band of brothers...<yawn> http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif Although in the same vain, The Beatles one was a refreshing change....

I respect everyones right to an opinion - hey I like Led Zep, and the Who http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif.... but what the F**K have they got to do with IL-2? Answer Zilch! What has Band Of brothers got to do with IL2 - hee haw http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif (Ok case in point BOfB is at least WWII related)

My point is - if you are going to lock the Beatles thread then you gotta lock ALL non IL2 related threads in here, and that includes WW2 posts. Stuff like New WW2 movies (or old ones - you know, the usual "My favourite" posts) and I also include tech posts (9800 pro queries or whatever - move them to the tech forum) - at least be consistent!

Do you really want all the extra work? I'm not trying to stir it up or have a go at Ivan (wouldn't dare http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) his and other mods jobs are hard enough http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif .... surely there are other things to worry about than a Beatles thread??....

Maybe its cos we're all so damned boared about the lack of P*tch info.... we gotta have something to talk about. Its only so long before the 999th topic about the number of rivets in a 109 cockpit gets rather repetitive...

Ivan, I think you do a good job with political threads, they should be locked, even those with supposed noble intent. There's never gonna be unanimous agreement with feelings and the consequences are too heavy.

I also posted in the Beatles thread. I didn't grow up with them but have played their music enough for them to be an enjoyable part of my life. I think pleasent discussions like that are actually good for this forum, helping to maintain some cohesiveness where anyone who can relate can join in the fun.

OT is not easy to judge. There has been pontificating against the restriction of political discussion and for the restriction of the Beatles? I don't envy your position as Mod. Maybe an OT forum or sticky thread would help, then again maybe it would hurt. One thing is for sure, with no changes over time to our sim experience members become bored and the line continues to be pushed back for stimulating discussion.

lock everything complaints, whines, let them post it to the 1cbeta email. Anything non game or aviation related should not even get locked but removed.

I think its ridculous how we cant ask for patch information or talk about if the abomb will be added in PF, but theres so many kamikazi threads. they get locked but theres threads talking aloud.

Also many other games and non aviation related topics

ORR should be read only, let the mods post the valid questions to oleg there, they should shutdown the skins and movie makers section and have them post in GD, look how inactive those are, I see tully wanting a seperate forum for the inputs device, what are 6-12 people at the most going to actual make custom cockpits and controllers. It seems after the removal of the pilots lounge orr became GD and GD became pilots lounge. That was the worse move ubi ever made "thinking well not really" cough patch errors PF stand alone idea http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

PS we need more mods especially if they made orr read only having the mods post the valid questions to oleg which he might respond to more often, More mods like hunter82, crazyivan, catrix, stevev.. euro snoopy catrix and vengence were good mods too

the rest seem way too power trip ego type people you know who and movieman mod.

ubi should do this for s bug reporting forum too, have a seperate forum thats read only and have the mods post the valid bugs and manage it. This way everyone knows whats been reported and wont report the same bug hundreds of times like the 1cbeta email recieves daily,it also keeps an organized list of all bugs for the community to see.

The cheating and exploits should be send to the 1cbeta address only so everyone doesnt know the names of them to find them on the net.

thats the way I would do it.

One other thing let thread creators moderate thier own thredds would make this place alot better, weed out the users just there to cause flamewars and country bashing. Its possible with the UBB forum which has different access levels of moderating.

Mr. Ivan, or can I just call you "Crazy"? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif I was curious, if you can start an "off-topic" forum and someone mentions anything about an airplane, can you lock it for being "on-topic"? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

He he he, just kidding buddy.

I agree with you. We do need a place for "off-topic" posts. Over time many of the posters have come to respect the opinions of other posters. We are a community in a sense, maybe a "Broadband of Brothers". I've often, as I'm sure many others have, wanted to post something OT and get other opinions. Chainsawofdoom's "skunk invasion" topic was a good example and a very good thread. Of course every coin has two sides. I understand that UBI might not want to create a "soapbox" for the haters and wannabe politicians.
I do appreciate the fact that you are trying to do something for the community that you don't have to and I feel that you've been a very fair mod. I hope Tully doesn't ban me for that. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif He's cool to.

I say close the forums completely. They bore me.

0-50 posts: How to do screenshots? Whats a good stick?
50-500 posts: [insert plane here] one the war because I saw it in a movie.
500-1,000 posts: But you can't prove the actual barometric pressure that day, so clearly [my side, which art holy] was the winner!
1,000-2,000 posts: What game is this again?
2,000+ posts: I made a poo.

I think an OT forum would be a nice occaisional diversion. There are a few people here I'd like to get to know better.

Y'ello again all.

<RANT>
My Beatles thread seems to be causing a few rumblings http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif oh dear. However surely you ask opinions on off topic subjects to gain the opinions of people who have similar interests (i.e. IL2). I can't really see what the problem with that is. Sure i could go to a music forum but they wouldn't be people who enjoyed flight sims.

The truth is, its a shame that for such a good collection of people in this community we are unable to discuss a wider range of topics. Like i said in my original Beatles thread, the reason for my interest was as i am from Liverpool myself (in fact born in the same hospital as John Lennon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/10.gif) and there can be a level of complancency regarding something when you are right under its nose. So to just gauge the opinions of people from a wider range is interesting. Like i said, i could go to a music forum and ask the same question, but they would have heard it before and i wouldn't be getting the opinions of the people i want opinions from. I mean as long as the topic is well marked (like, "OT: How many roads must a man walk down?") then people don't have to enter it. This is a community after all, and i'd like to keep it that way... Just my thoughts...

</RANT>

oh yea. This might just be the most off topic thread in the world ever, after "Is this a pimple or a boil?" thread http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif

Ya - sometimes I really miss the Pilots Lounge... I know it was closed because it got out of hand but it was nice to know what was on the sturmovikers minds besides IL2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Well I have to say that if there was more forthcoming from Oleg and co. we wouldn't need to talk of other things.I must confess it's getting a little boring lately and the evils of sex music and day to day living are bound to raise their ugly heads.Still I suppose I can go and count the varients of russian planes, that should keep me busy for 2 weeks.Maybe a thread for people who are bored would work.I love this sim but it's wearing a little thin lately. This is not trying to start a war so don't aim your 50s at me as I can fly between them.Cheers. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif

OT forum thingie would definitiely be appreciated, by most of us, I reckon. No matter how many patches we get, there will always be something OT we would like to shear with our friends at this place. Some of us have hung around for quite some time now, you know.

Perhaps not in this latest re-incarnation! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
