Who has the Right to dictate these people's Rights, exactly?

Last I heard, I was an American, and that means I should stand for defending other people's Rights, not decide who shouldn't get to enjoy them.

Sometimes I wonder what the hell they teach people in school

i'm a little confused here, isn't a sign of distress an upsidedown flag?

by tradition, yes.

If you were to look at a US Army uniform, I believe you would see that on one shoulder, the US Flag is reversed- so that it doesn't look "wrong" on that shoulder.

I think an upside down flag is used to insult the country it represents.

The people who usually say that have A) never had to defend that flag and/or B) never seen what happens when that flag is torn down and replaced with another.

?

Replacing the flag and destroying it is an insult, turning it upside down is a traditional signal that something is wrong.

Generally, each country has an accepted set of rules for the proper respectful treatment of it's flag; it varies from country to country, so what applies in the US doesn't necessarily apply to other national flags.

Unfortunately, the etiquette for respecting our flag has become obscure; most Americans are ignorant of the basic rules, and those of us that aren't tend to take it seriously, because we cared enough to find out on our own.

Naturally, the recent revival of "patriotism" has created some problems for those of us who had the flag to ourselves the last 35 years or so. I try to remember that the improper treatment of the flag is not malicious in most cases, and if possible, I will DIPLOMATICALLY bring up the subject, and see if the problem can be corrected, and the parties involved can be educated on the subject.

If not, well, I'm keeping a little list for when the Revolution comes... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

My father is a U.S. Marine(and I have had 4 years of JROTC) so:
1: distressed is upside down for the USA, showing it backwards is just utter stupidity and disrepect for not knowing how to display a flag.
2: Very True, any Flag, no matter what nation, bieing displayed on American Soil NEEDS to have a light on it if flown at night.

oops noticed i might have said the wrong thing.. i should have said.."probably should not display the flag" instead of "dont deserve to show the flag" everyone has the right to show colors.. true... but not all know how to do it properly

I agree. Its one thing not to impose on others. Its another not having the willingness to stand.

Nationalism is making peoples hate each other.
Hate make war possible.
War always reaches the depths of horrors because of idiots who perpetuates terror from generation to generation under the pretext of vengeance.

Quite profound, Teacher http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif and true, too.

But Man isn't a cuddly puppy, he's a mean 'ol scarred Mamba with two lumps down his middle, and looking for a third. If all of God's creatures had to wear a sign, Man's would say, "Doesn't get along well with others".

"nationalism" is part of our genetic heritage. We are a social mamal. Look at any social mamal, they live in groups. These goups do not like other groups, even of the same breed. Aggression is required, to vie for mates and food, to hunt, to defend internal status, to defend territory. As humans we have 1 additional twist, ability for abstract thought. That enables us to for groups around ideas nad other intangibles.

It's what we are. Ignoring it, or trying to legislate it out of existance will only cause problems. Which we are seeing, incidentally.

That's insane!
I am an American and I feel absolutely no shame about driving a foreign car. I have a Honda, get 32 miles per gallon, have had no major problems, and I'll get 200,000 miles out of when im done. Its not my fault that in general American cars get bad gas mileage, rust like you won't believe, and are constantly recalled for safety defects. Its called capitalism, and I wouldnt change that for the world.

Forgot, my foreign car was manufactured in the United States.

Chuck_Older

I see no reason to not buy a foreign car.

If new US cars were any good, I might buy a new car.

The car I want is a '98 Riviera. Not new, and I'll have to replace the supercharger impeller sprocket, I'm told (me, not a mechanic).

My winter car is a Taurus. Yippee, it's crap and it's American. It is also dying and has cost me a lot to run. It needs the same high price parts replaced that I replaced 4 years ago.

My summer car is a big block muscle car convertible, daily driver. But I own it because I like it, not because it's American. That's simply a bonus. It's a good car because I built it that way, not because it's American made.

But as far as foreign cars go, it is a common misconception that all US cars are junk and all foreign (particlularly Japanese) cars are all good values that are reliable. I know people with Japanese cars that are simply shocked, their cars are lemons and they can't understand it.

The car market is going to have another revolution soon, just like in the early '70s. Wait and see.

Buy what you like and stick with it. Being American means having choices http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif and I like it that way.

Undertow, You really love to beleive the hype, don't ya?

I have 152,000+ miles on my 91 Grand Prix. Had 160,000+ on my '90 Grand Prix before it got clipped by an SUV. Had over 100,000 on my '70 Olds before I sold it to get my '84 Trans-Am, which itself had 148,000+ on it before it got wrecked.

US cars last far long enough. People just refuse to open their eyes and face facts.

Incidentally, the only reason japanese cars are built here is because of the tariffs. The money is still going back to the zaibatsu bastards.

You can't be proud of the country if you are ashamed of it's products.
