I'll be honest, I've kinda ignored this aircraft up until now. But this morning I found myself with some time before work and powered up the QMB.

Mission 1
4 IAR 80's (Me included) Vs 6 Spitfire MkVb's
(I like being a little out numbered).
Speed was bit slow, but she had fairly good visability, and turns pretty well. The armorment was a bit weak, four .303 (or 7.62mm) I never exploded a Spit, but I damaged three enough to make the Pilot bail, and thus I got three kills.

Mission 2
4 IAR 81a's (Me included) Vs 6 Spitfire MkVb's
What a differance two extra guns makes. The two additional 13mm guns really increases the killing power of this bird. I downed five of the six this time (my number 3 getting the other). Forward visability is slightly decreased compared to the IAR 80. I took a couple hits from one Spit, but was relatively unaffected, probably due to the low number of hits he scored, and the added armor. She turns just as well as the 80 but is much more lethel.

Conclusion, though designed as a light bomber, the 81a is a better fighter than the 80, and is overall a pretty good fighter in comparison to others in the game.

It takes a completely different fighting style to use this aircraft than the 109, but the IAR 81a is a fun plane to fly, and seems very effective against early war aircraft, and still a threat to later planes as well.

Those 81a's 13mm guns were traded for 20mm cannons later and that's what you flew.

IMO it's a nice plane for its time. I couldn't figure out all the moaning about it here when AEP came out. My first online kill in AEP came in an IAR 81. After attempting in a P-38, P-51, Fiat (but came close) - guess I just like the "crap planes" best!

Also, in my offline career in an IL2, I'm more afraid of this plane than a 109...the IAR's can stick with you far too easily.

Interesting stuff mates!

I also haven't had much time with this plane. Did a single mission or two that came with the game. Was somewhat surprised. Shot down several early-war Yaks (Yak1Bs I imagine they were).

Recall that while I had a lot of guns, it seemed like they were pellet guns. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Damaged planes, might have torn a wing off, but given my usual range 100-150 metres, and that these were fragile Yaks I was firing upon, certainly not impressed by its firepower.

And yet for some reason was still generally happy with her. Maybe it was the mission. Not sure.

"I am not a good shot. Few of us are. To make up for this I hold my fire until I have a shot of less than 20 degree deflection and until I'm within 300 yards. Good discipline on this score can make up for a great deal." (Lt. Colonel John C. Meyer, USAAF)

I've read that some squadrons recieved 81s without the bomb rack (or just removed it themselves), and then used them alongside 80s for straight fighter duties. At that point, the difference between the two planes is almost only in armament and designations.

Also, what with their PZL-copied parts, early French engine, and small caliber MGs, I'd say the IARs are definately more than the sum of their parts. There was a plan to instal a BMW 801 in this airframe, but getting one of those from the Germans was a pipe dream. Just think what that engine would do to the plane!

I reckon it's quite a plane considering the era and economic climate it was developed in.

Love the IAR :>

Could anyone confirm for me the actual production date [pref. from reliable source rather than typing on a web page] of the IAR80, 81a, and 81c? Were they all produced in 1940 or did the later marks come later on in the war?

The design of the IAR-80 was proposed in November 1936 and was going to be fitted with a Junkers Jumo 211Da. However, the germans failed to deliver the 3 engines promised. The only engine available was the IAR-14K (IIRC, based on the Gnome-Rhome engine) and the prototype was fitted with it.

The first IAR-80s were delivered in February 1941, and the 81s were available in January 1942.

That explains a thing or two. A great plane and I'm really looking forward to using it in the campaign now.
