A vector is a bearing. i.e. Vector 187 means bearing 187º on your compass.

If by "numbers below the vector sign" you mean the speedbar (lower left) - they are in Metric - Like all data shown numeric in FB (not the English/American dials though - they are Imperial http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)
They show Altitude (meters) Speed (kmh) and heading (compass - in degrees 0 is north 90 is east 270 is west and 180 is south)

The vector is your heading. Its a compas devided in degrees.

0 is north
90 east
180 south
270 west
and so on...

In the German and US planes you can also check your waypoints on the repeater compass (remote heading compass). It will have two arrows (inner arrow = next waypoint, outer arror = current plane direction). The german one has a visible plane arrow (current), and an inner arrow (next waypoint).

Hope this helps.

The following link has a nice graphic representation of the compass. its the bottom image:

Also, don't get confused when the vector heading is called out. Its usually for the flight group first to enter into action, your wing may not be the one. I turn their subtitles off.
