I may be setting myself up for disappointment here, but I have a suspicion that the devs left us a little hint that other interior areas than we know about will be modelled in the final release. Watch the segment of the storm video where they move to the aft zentrale (I think that's how it's supposed to be spelled). If you notice, whenever you mouse over an area that you can move into the cursor turns red. This is what happens when they mouse over the hatch leading to the petty officers' quarters. Also, text that seems to say "interior aft" shows up. This sounds like a temporary name for what is now empty space but will be replaced with the interiors once created. If only the interiors we've seen thusfar are what are to be modelled, I don't think these pieces of evidence would be there.

Good catch! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/sonar.gif It seems to be the only door/hatch that has any text attached to it.

About the E3DemoClip: What is the round hatch behind the Chief Engineer? The cursor turns red there too. Where does that lead? Is it the Sound Station/Radio Room? And to the left of the Sound Station is a doorway that doesn't turn red. Where doesn't that lead? And in the bottom right of the screen are the main control guages, and above them is a silouette if a sub. What are the color changes occuring there?

i think the "interieur aft" thing is just to let the player know that thats is how far he can go . or maybe its for the people who wanna make modes to add interieurs , sort of like an "empty slot" but i hardly expect that they keep us in the dark if they would model this.

From second live chat:

quote:
(HB73): Have you decided yet if it will be possible to walk around the U-boat versus only be able to visit key areas?
(DevTeam): Not yet. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

This question caught my attention during the live chat, because it seems ambiguous. Was it a question whether you can move around freely in each room versus being pinned to the center of the room, or is it a question whether you can visit all compartments versus only a select few? HB73 may have meant it one way where the devs understood it the other way around.

I may be foolish but it gave me a little hope for a complete interior. Not that it matters much to me, though.

Whether we get a FPS style interior or not! At this point, its not to important, as long as the keys instruments can be read, w/out having to pull up the overlays.

The fact we have a feeling of the crew, and a sence of the "Working" interior of what "Is" in the game so far is a giant step in the right direction.

Being a purist, a "Full" interior with dynamic damage, and the ability to go inspect every battery, every strand of wire, would be pure heaven to me. What we "Do" have is far and above anything in this genre to date, and im certainly happy with the way SH3 is shaping up to be.

I'm pretty sure the comparments they have modelled are the exact same compartments which were represented in 2D in Silent Service, AoD, Silent Hunter 1, and Silent Hunter 2.

Just this time we get it in interactive 3D.

BUT THIS TIME WE GET A CONNING TOWER!!!!!http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Yes I'm not complaining at all with what we are currently getting. It's just wonderful the leap forward this game already is as far as capturing the atmosphere of being inside a cramped and claustrophobic u-boat. The Kaleun didn't really venture out of the areas that are currently modelled anyways. It would be nice to tour my whole boat and see the crew doing their job, eating, or sleeping...but this is extraneous superficial wants that will only add atmosphere.

I will be fully expecting these features in SH4 though!!!!

SH4? If SH3 is as popular as everyone is hoping, i cant see a SH4 for a "Good" number of yrs.
lets get SH3 on the shelves, before we start thinking about a further sequal...

With an advanced gaming engine, and the popularity of the 1st DC, im guessing (Hoping) there will a number of expansion packs to follow up the series.

I am totally fascinated by the storm-footage an the other videos and screens! The DevTeam does a great job! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I have something to say to the interior of the Type VIIc Boat too:

I miss the 'housing' of the attack-persicope in the Control-Room! There should be a huge cylinder where the attack-periscope is stored in (next to the ladder that leads to the tower).

In the E3-Democlip we see the segment where the radio-room is. When we look foward in the boat we look directly onto the torpedoroom-door. But there should be the officers-quarters and the mess-room.
If the devteam does not plan to make this area accessable, i would be very happy to at least SEE this area. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Question: Will the different U-Boat-types have different intereiors?

Greetings

As soon as investors discover a profitable market you can usually count on them to fall over each other to squeeze every last drop out of it. And vice versa. That means sequels, addons and what have you. Can't say I am sorry for that tendency in this case. SH3 seems promising to become a hit, and therefore I am also drooling and fantasizing about the things that a future SH4 could bring us http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Its a fine line between developing/rushing out another game of the same genre, soon after a previous release.
IE: if the product is doing well, then usualy (But not always) The publishers tend to hold off on a sequal, for fear of denting sales for the current product.
On the other hand its a finacial debate on the side of the publishers whether to even finance a sequal if the current product hits the "Bargin Bin basement" after only a month on the shelves.
But as we have seen lately, Ubi seems to be surprising everyone, from complete U-turns in polocies, to damn right laid-back attitudes toward development time...
Although, unlike flight sims, Naval sims seem to be a finacial nitemare, on the side of publishers... It's just not an abvious "Cash-Cow" in the eyes of the bean-counters, unlike FPS's, flight sims, etc, which have followings in the tens-of-thousands, rather than thousands.

I agree, and because of this, the only way to make money is to make a good number of games based on the same engine.

So hopefully the game engine for SH3 is very very flexible.

Or continue to make expansion packs for SH3 http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Shan_Hackett,
Some good points.

I think that naval sims are a cash cow. However naval sims, and even flight sims require substance, a career.

I love IL2 forgotten Battles flight model & combat, however I have no intention of buying another one of his products as I HATE the level career mode that he implemented. That is, if I crash or die etc it does not end my career, I get to fly the mission again. It is the same old mission‚'s career after career after... regardless how often (and not that often) they change the encounters within the mission.

As eye candy has taken a hold over all else, then WWII naval simulations has suffered. WWII Naval sims require substance, a career and above all else a random/dynamic campaign. Get it right and you can release better and better implementation of it and continue the sales as was the case with SH. As long as the content is there.

I think that this engine has incredible potential for many iterations such as a Pacific version etc.

I think that WWII naval sims have been a casualty of the 'catch 22', in that they put some very poor **** out there so they tanked, because they tanked that made a decision to put featureless products trying to milk the genera, they generally tanked. Thus proving that naval sims are not a cash cow, a self fulfilling prophecy!

SHIII looks as if we will finally get substance and eye candy. I mention at Subsim.com that SHIII looks to be the new millenniums AOD and that this Dev Team is shaping up to be this millenniums Dynamix.

Cheers,

Teddy B√¬§r
