At some point I think it'd be great if we could get at least one other Western European map (I know people want a Med map and other things as well - it could be a 2 for 1 deal http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif) to sort of round things off for Western Europe and give people who like making missions some chances to incorporate some of the aircraft that are up and coming in AEP and post AEP in historical settings.

My suggestion is for a section along the Rhine were alot of the fighting took place. This seems like a perfect setting placing us on the Belgian and German border. The map would need to be around the same size as the Normandy map (although skewed in height rather than width).

Here's a bit of an idea what went on there: http://onwar.com/maps/wwii/westfront/1at3rborderdec44.htm

Obviously my interest in the future is for a Tempest/Typhoon campaign where you fly from Vokles (I think thats on the map) or Eindhoven (which we do already have) on tactical superiority missions over this area. Enemies would even include the Me 162 (which I believe one or two were shot down by Tempest pilots over this area), the Me 262, both Dora models that we have, and virtually every other late war German fighter against every late war Allied fighter we have in the game. If we managed to get the Meteor at some point then that'd likely be relatively at home in this area as well.

My other map suggestion would hopefully make the Med people somewhat happy. A section (and I have no idea which - but likely in the south) of Italy to represent the campaigns fought there and provide a historical map for the new Italian planes were getting would also likely be a great thing to have. With P-38's, Spitfire's, challenging the best of the Italian airforce and battles on the ground...it'd be a great place to have as well.

If I could also make a suggestion for a bonus desert dogfight map with a number of airbases and sand dunes (there is one dogfight map already that features some of that) which would at the very least let people simulate some of that earlier war stuff in the Med.

Obviously making historical WWII maps is hard to do with some accuracy so I suppose this is a stab in the dark but I think I'd be really great to get these as part of a post AEP release.

Thanks for reading!

Well, we have the name "Eindhoven" written on one of the maps, but that's bogus. The real Eindhoven is 130 km away from that base on the Ardennes maps. (Most of) the other airbases on that map have phantasy names, too.

The distance between Eindhoven and Frankfurt is 50 kilometers on the map. In real life it's 270 kilometers.

A realistic map of the rhine region would be very demanding RAMwise and would require many many hours of work. This is a region with lots of towns and buildings. Most other maps cover rural regions with fewer objects to model.

Your right...but I wouldn't think it any more demanding than the excellent Normandy map we got. The whole of the Rhine doesn't have to be done...that'd be huge. But a more sizeable portion of it to a more realistic scale (the Ardennes map we have is a very good scripted dogfight map to be sure) would be great.

Ice-Fire, your idea of a rhine-map is very good. and deserves at least one BUMP

if not two

BUMPs

The Rhine and "Mosel" (dunno the english name for that river) valleys are a beautiful landscape and would allow us to fly some pretty interesting misions.

I assume the town Rehmagen is well known - at least it's bridge is. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Would it not be better to have a real channel-map? I think where were a lot more combats in that area.
Also there could be Dünkrichen so we could cover Spring 40 till Summer 44.
That are more than 4 years!
With the Spitfire Mk. I and the other Spitfires in progress that would mean very cool dogfights.

That's also right Stefan, but the Rhine-Map could also be used for BoF, Reichsverteidigung and the late war (engagements 2nd TAF vs. LW) scenarios.

But in conclusion, both maps would be the best solution, since having a REAL part of GB is much better than having a fictious island somewhere in the channel.

I doubt that we will get a channel map before the arrival of BOB. Marketing people always try to sell new products, and if we get that map already in FB then BOB won't be as new as it would be otherwise. And I also doubt that the developers are fond of doing the same work twice.

It's easy to request one or two new maps, making them doesn't seem to be quite as easy. Read the two paragraphs at the bottom of this page (http://www.simhq.com/_air/air_110b.html) of the interview with Luthier about his experience when he created the Normandy map.

I also would like to have a map of the Moselle. Meanwhile I use the Lvov map as stand-in. The landscape is very similar to that of the Rhine/Moselle region. Here's a Coop mission I just completed: Moselle 44 -- P-47 Ground Attack, P-51 Escort, BF-109 Intercept (http://home.arcor.de/rayluck/sturmovik/moselle-44-14.zip)

If only we were able to hide the town names written on the maps! This could be an easy way to many more new scenarios on the existing maps.

Thats a good suggestion plumps! I'll have to give your mission a try later.

As someone else pointed out...having England on the maps would be a great thing to have as well but with BoB likely offering England in some new extreme amounts of detail and because IL2 FB still favors tactical warfare I think having the Rhine (or Moselle as was also suggested) would give us the ability to portray some very significant tactical (and strategic as well) late war fighting. As it does stand with the Normandy map...the fictional British base gives us some opportunity for the Channel warfare that took place...its not entirely accurate but its possible to similate without having to resort to an Eastern Front map.

I think it's a great idea, but I'd also like to caution about making too many compromises. In my experience, trying to please everyone, or in this case, cover all the possible bases, makes a situation where it is difficult to make enough of the elements come together properly to please anyone or do any of the things you wanted to do to your level of satisfaction.

I would advise erring on the side of historical accuracy rather than tactical flexibility.
