View Full Version : Squads? Competitive league system? Questions in need of answers and stuff...

Hello,

I have not played IL2 in quite a long time but decided to get some playtime on greater green yesterday. I had forgotten how fun the simulation really is. The reason I sort of stopped playing for a while is mostly due to the fact that flying around in public servers (uhm, -server-, only good server online is greater green) gets very repetitive and boring after a while. Just wondering if anyone that is currently in a squad actually does any sort of scrimmages, etc? Team games, where the concept "teamwork" actually applies. Is there any sort of league that teams compete in or anything of this nature? In which case, how does these team games work? Or does being in a squad, in this community, essentially mean you just hang out with people you know/like?

As playing in public servers without ANY teamwork is really getting boring fast I'd really like to play with a team that is organized and apply tactics to the game. Using voice communication etc is essential. I'd like to learn tactics and strategy for team games and fly to achieve a common goal instead of just flying around to get kills. On public servers you can hardly even help your teammates (I fly LW mostly) from the Russian fighters because they are to damn stupid or obsessed with getting kills to help me help them.

Are there any teams out there that fly scrimmages/matches every week or so need a decent 109 pilot?

I'd also like to comment on the b1tching that STILL occurs in public servers regarding certain planes being over-modeled/under-modeled etc. First of all I have no clue on what's over/under-modeled and really, does it matter, you'll never get it 100% accurate (not saying the game cannot be improved though) either way? Just accept the way the game is designed and adapt your playing style accordingly. As I understand it fighters are only to provide cover for bombers, which essentially is what the air dominance is all about, bombing the enemy's targets and preventing the enemy from bombing your targets. What most people don't realize is that in real life combat the main emphasis was not on 1on1 tactics. I'm sure those kind of dogfights were actually fairly rare. So in concept people who use fighter class aircraft to go at it in 1on1 dogfights to judge how they should perform really have a skewed vision on reality (imo). The FW190 was probably a really good plane when the proper tactics and teamwork was applied. However down low against Russian fighters (mainly developed to aid the low altitude IL2, as I understand it) 1versus1 it does not stand much of a chance. I'm sure tactics change an awful lot when you enter in 2 or more fighters flying together with a common goal. On public servers everyone just fly around doing their own thing.

Yeah well either way public servers get boring.

What does "abusive squads" mean?

So... I guess there is not too many people whom play organized team matches?

Hi sdreyer,

I'm not the enlistment officer with IV/JG51, but you could give us a try. We participate in online wars and have our own DF server wars going on right now. Be aware though that we only fly with full hard game settings (except for practice on servers such as the Greater Green). If you like padlock, icons, etc., we're not a good choice for you. However, I don't think we're all that 'abusive' and in fact are very passionate about flying with 'full hard' settings and love introducing people to this type of flying. Here's the link.

I'll check it out Stachl. Yes I enjoy full real also, except Mini-map path which I prefer on by far, I'm not a navigator http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I still don't graps what "abusive" teams means.

Me neither? Unless he means they pick on you till they frustrate you to death, eithr verbaly or just hammer your pants off in the game. Making you struggle all alone. We at the 131st are nothing like that. But we are too layed back though. To be a serious threat in an online war.

Without a doubt, my most enjoyable time online so far has been over the last couple of nights flying bombers with some fellow mates.

You're exactly right, the game would 100 times better if folks would play as an organized group. Just imagine all the team flying over with a couple of bombers and 5-6 fighters for escort. Together in formation. Can't imagine the other side being able to withstand the attack.

I suppose squads train/play like this, but I would like to jump online and play with and against groups of "joes" like me trying to organize their assault runs. Again, when the attempt is made by even a couple of virtual pilots the game is really exciting to play.

Hiya,
Our Squad flies our own AI co-op war every week on Tuesday nites on our Kali Server (kali.net) the "JG 3 Airfield". We also fly VEF on HL, some of the guys are organizing a Thursday nite squad effort for that, and there are usually "pick up" co-ops in the evenings on Kali the other nites. We are also interested in flying against other squadrons for fun.
Feel free to drop by Kali to visit or check our site @

Had a great flight the other night covering 2 TB2's.

There were about 5 of us flying cover while the two TB3's lumbered slowly towards the target loaded with huge bombs.

I wasn't much use as cover but I did get some hits on a few 109's and must have made it a bit harder for them.

way better than 100% dogfights.

I'd like to suggest you check out our squad at http://www.Jagdgeschwader26.net and Hyperlobby 1900-2100 EST most days. We are a squadron of fighters and bombers attempting to utilize tactics and strategy.
We are presently tweaking a scenario in the Crimea that provides fighter and bomber targets.

Hope to see you there,

Hi again,

Well I don't know why the site isn't coming up for you, it does for me. We also have a forum you could try at

http://www.jg51.net/forums/index.php

Sorry, we also do our own navigating, hehe. We have some very detailed maps you can download on our site. Of course this is not always the case, but we do like to find our own way home if possible. Like I said we currently have a couple of like-minded,top notch, Allied squads we fight against on Thursdays and Sundays. If you like to replicate the tactics and strategy of WWII air combat, with all it's variety (some of it boring some of it very exciting and satisfying), you'll like flying with us. Anyway, drop by and see us if you can.

Gut fliege!

Hey Stachl,

Yeah, just that someone forgot to add the DNS record for www.jg51.net, (http://www.jg51.net,) http://jg51.net loads fine it seems.

I entered in the enlist application, waiting for reply.

I guess I can get used to navigating if I know the maps before entering the game. But otherwise how do you even navigate?? There's no headings marked on the map, no degree's or anything, I don't see how you have any reference to work with. Navigation seems to just take away from the gameplay in my opinion. Would be a lot easier to call for backup etc with the mini-map path icons.

I read up on the site some Jabo. I don't mind good organization, but sounds a bit too formal. I mean look at this for instance:

-
"
All members of JG26 will acknowledge an Officer's presence with the following action: <S!> This protocol will be extended to all Senior Officers when the JG26 Kommodore or the JG26 Adjutant is not present and shall continue until the officer places the room "At ease"."
-

Are you for real? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

That's not even the worst, you require the use of ICQ. NOOOO! Haha, can't stand that program that's just annoying. None of you old timers know of IRC? :-)
