I have only just become interested in playing IL2 Sturmovik online and after looking at the forum it all seems FB , I am quite happy with the original version and have not scratched the surface of the games err... whatever it might be and think the modelling etc is great,
Or am I missing out on something, is FB definably better .And if not where can I join a IL2 Sturmovik squadron hopefully in the uk or europe.
Thankyou

Clive

The short answer is that many online squads and players have adopted Forgotten Battles. That doesn't mean that there aren't people using the earlier IL-2 version online, but reports are that there aren't as many playing IL-2 version as there were before Forgotten Battles' release.

Do you need Forgotten Battles? *Need* is a pretty strong word. If it comes down to paying your grocery bill or buying FB, then 'No' you don't need it. Is it better than IL-2? Mostly yes (in terms of graphics and more planes/maps) with a squinting eye at some of the odd 'performance anomolies' (there are no 'bugs'!) and the controversial changes to some of the original version planes' FMs. Overall FB looks nicer and has more content, has that Dynamic Campaign thing, and is the currently supported version of the IL-2 experience so if you enjoy IL-2 and are already itching for more planes and terrains, it may be a justifiable purchase for you.

Yes if you're happy, I think you should stick to Il2S and ask again after the patch is out and tested.

Right now I would say it's not really worth it, especially if you're still unsure.

Get FB............do you need it? Of course not... Will you want it?? You betcha.....! Why wait...if you buy it after the patch you will still have to patch it. Might as well get it now and get familiar with some of it's features..the patch will be here soon.

No need to wait until it's patched.
That's like saying your not going to watch the NFL until there are 40 teams.
Why not get it and learn the basics and enjoy what you can while you wait?
In reality, no game lasts forever and this holds true for FB too, so why waste a second?
Go get it.

I have IL-2 Sturmovick.

After reading all the *talk* about the FM etc., I'm waiting for the patch, then I'll get it.

Sure, FB has more planes and different maps and 'IL-2' is included, but according to those who played IL-2 before FB came out complain that just about everything is over/under modelled.

Besides, two months later and I'm still having a ball with it. If you're happy with IL-2 Sturmo, cool.

Check out the forum after the patch comes out and see what the opinion is then.

I'll wait for the patch, thanks.

it looks better graphically (even if your machine cannot handle the 1024 skins and perfect settings it still is better)

and it has more toys to play with (more planes, bigger boats, search lights and balloons stuff like that)

it has some resemblance of real engine management

All of which combined kinda makes it hard to go back to IL2 once you have tried Forgotten Battles ....... even though in some ways the final patch of IL2 is the better game

You are talking - Wait for patch - like FB is full of bugs, or cannot be played like it is. I'm perfectly satisfied with it, its better then originan version. Still, when patch will come, we will only gain more. So get it and get used to it!

I didn't buy it right away, but that's because my hardware needed some desperate upgrades as I was barely to run Il2, nevermind FB. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

As soon as that was settled I got out and got myself a copy, and a great buy it was. I still play the Il2 offline (campagnes are a little easer on me in Il2 than in FB).

There are plenty of people playing FB online, but for Il2 you'll have some searching to do (or waiting).

Concering a squad; the Fighting Irish are a great bunch of people - check out their website and forum /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif I'm sure you'll be more than welcome to join up.

Hey, listen, pal

you HAVE to buy FB, reason is simple, FB is the best(NOT one of the best) sim so far, and FB is much better than IL-2 /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

For online you'll probably want FB. Online IL2 Sturmovik numbers have dropped to 5% or less since the release of Forgotten Battles. As for better, graphically definitely (if your system is up to it). Otherwise is a matter of opinion. So far, opinions are varied, though there's a patch due in the next month or so.

Well, people complained about FM (and other issues) for IL2.
Now people complains about Forgotten Battles.
I'm sure people WILL complain about the patched FB...
So why to wait?

GET IT NOW!!!

If you did not already have IL-2, I would recommend you to buy FB over IL-2. Whether you already go ahead and get FB since you already have IL-2 and have only scratched the surface with it-it really comes down to what you want to do. Since you are content with IL-2 and don't yet care about new maps or planes, the only real reason to get FB is for online play or for the dynamic campaign.

In any case, welcome to the community. /i/smilies/16x16_robot-happy.gif

If your desire is to play online...get FB.

If your desire is to play offline...well, get FB.

The added planes, graphics and dynamic campaign all add up to a more complete experience. IMHO

IL2 was and is still a great sim, but it just doesn't compare to FB. And as others have said, the coveted patch release is just around the corner. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I complain with the offline (campaign) mode and AI, which makes campaign games unenjoyable to me.

FB is a must only to play online since more people play online with FB than with IL, however it doesn't play as smooth as Il2S online, and some planes ruin the fun IMO (like the hurricane).
