http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif In the BF109 I just can't crash land. I lower the gear, drop the flaps and make it go at zero percent speed and shut down the engine and flare as much as I can, but only to blow up. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Traditionally a crash landing is performed "wheels-up" - maybe you'd have more success that way?

If you want to crashland, don`t lower gear cos it often makes you bounce and hit the ground with more impact.

Plus after 1.22 crashlandings are much easier.

IMHO, you shouldn't lower you gear when during crash landing, at least not 109.

Speed is the KEY.

Come down at a faster airspeed. You may wish to just used takeoff flaps at most. Don't flare too much. Come in flat...just fly above ground while gently pulling back on stick as you lose speed. You will eventually settle to the ground.

Then the real Battle begins. Fb109 almost seems to be programmed to break gear and collapse every 3rd (on average) attempt at landing off the official FB airports (I don't call them airfields these things are HUGE and exposed in the open).

I get on a uber flat landscape and practice taking off and landing Fb109 and its the most difficult to keep from crashing during the take off or landing run (off airport).

A beach is a nice flat place to practice - and there's plenty of water to put any fires out. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Heres my tried and tested and 100 % succesfull to technique to crash land safely.

approach the ground as normal, level off at about 30 ft then drop your flaps to full flap extension, as the aircraft is constanly slowing you should bleed off more altitude until your just skimming the deck. Just before your prop hits the deck get flying level again and wait for your speed to bleed off completely till stall speed, keep the nose up and let the aircraft 'sink' onto the ground. If you get this right like i have mastered you can crash land an aircraft without causing any more damage than a bent prop time after time.

Hope that helps.

I have flown the 109 a lot ( since il2 came out) and its one of my favorites.

I have also made quite many emergencylandings in the field.
A suggestion if u try a wheels outlanding in the field is to decend more carefully than normally since the ground is so bumpy. Practice on doing 3pointlandings, this way u learn to controll the ac in low speeds and thus wont bump so much as when u come in faster.
If u have damage in the wings a wheels outlanding is a no no bcause U will flip at low speeds = u must have higher speed and wheels up to survive.= again, never try wheels out‚¬®landings in the field if u have damaged wings.

There is no valid reason for trying a wheelsout landing in the field, and it isnt realistic either, but its difficult and fun, especially if u land on a narrow road (more realistic).

If u have damaged wings and attempt an emergensylanding on a runway, try to have more speed than normal and the risk to flip decreases. If the damage is severe u will probably flip regardless of speed . then u will have to do a wheels uplanding on the runway at faster speed ( U'll survive)( often happened in RL).

My best suggestion is to practise 3-point landings. This way u will learn to controll the ac in the extreeme low speeds and u will be able to handle emergencies more easily.

cheers

If you absolutely have to crashland wheels down, here is my suggestion, I have done it myself ALOT of times in the bf 109 after attacking bombers:

drop to 100m, find a good spot with LOTS of free space, if the ground suddenly drops or rises in front of the planes you are sure to crash and burn.
Next lower your speed to arround 230 km/h drop takeoff flaps (landing flaps make you bounce). You should the try to flare at aprrox. 170 km/h. Try putting the plane down at 150 km/h, but DO NOT try a three point landing! Rather just put the main wheels down in the lowest angle of attack possible.
After touchdown IMIDEATLY raise you flaps, cut the engine, and slow and easy pull slightly back on the stick to prevent falling on your nose, If the plane bumps off anyway quikly retract your gear for least ammound of damage.
don't use breaks on this one just let the plane run and bleed off the speed.
Congratulations! A succesfull crashland with no dammage to the plane.

You can do it wheels down but you run th risk of flipping over...especially if you are in the dirt in a field somewhere... wheels up nose up is the way to go.....

You have infinite perfect flat landscape flying off the map edge. But...beware that sometimes the rivers extend to infinity but you do not see them, but you will certainly sink into them while taxiing. I have done this a few times. Pick a map with few rivers and fly off map edge and you can go forever practicing landing and takeoff.

Better is the infinite ice sheet extending to the west of the lower Stalingrad Winter map. That blue water is all frozen, to infinity, and even if there are rivers, they are frozen too. The vast ice sheets are very pretty just before the sun goes down.

Another place real fun to play around on the ground is off the map edge beyond the lower right edge of Kuban map. The 2000m verticle cliffs are an Awsum sight to behold and you can take off and land beyond the cliffs on the flat infinite landscape, and there are no rivers in this part of Kuban map...btw, this proves we can have some sort of Dover Cliffs over the FB.

This has always worked for me. Find your home field, cut your speed, roll over on your back, hit control E. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Actually, 109 seems pretty easy to crash land if the field is flat...without trees. Don't think I've blown one up in a wheels-up landing for a long time. Don't flare it out too high; it won't bounce like it does with wheels down.

BTW, in real life LW 109 aces survived many such landings. Rall, Hartmann, Lipfert and Barkhorn all walked away from 109 crash landings...some of them, several times.

Winning isn't everything;
It's the only thing!
