I am a bit of a newbee, and I have been trying my hand at flying these things. Problem is that even in mild turns, they go into flat spins. Where they really that bad, or is it just me? Can't seem to figure out why the Soviets liked them so much.

Standby for detailed explanation from someone else http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif But I can say that the P39 and P63 had the engine mounted amidships and hence the center of gravity is altered dramatically from nose mounted engines.

The trick to flying these two is to watch your angle in tight turns; if you wrench the stick you will definitely regret it since the plane will "slip" immediately. It's a fantastic plane if you learn to respect it's limitations though.

Take one or both out for training flights before getting nasty with enemy planes. Stress the aircraft and learn it's boundaries. Then when you are familiarized to the plane take it up in anger. This is what I do and it works well for me.

You should fly Cobras veeery gently. Their maneuvrability is not exceptional, but it's decent.
However, avoid doing "snappy" maneuvres will reasonably prevent stalls or snap-rolls. Also keeping a good speed helps.

However, Cobras are quite slow aircraft in terms of pure speed (except the King) and, most of all, climb speed. So, try to make some speed and don't lose it!
In a dive Cobras can make quite a lot of speed, so be careful because in that case their maneuvrability decreases drammatically (expecially the P-39) and you can crash on the ground.

Regarding guns, I prefer the N1 or the Q1 models, since they bear more MGs. They're very important to fight against other fighters, since the "bigga cannon" fires VERY slowly and has an awful recoil, thus you can effectively use it only in single shots. However, against less "moving" targets (bombers or ground stuff) the 37 mm is devastating.

"OUR" p39 have not the Russian configuration.
They took some weight off it by removing some of the machineguns and other stuff, leaving 2 mg's and the powerful cannon. They did the same with the p40 (leaving only 2 mg's)
The Russians thought generally that 2 mg's and a cannon was enough for all planes.

In FB the p39 is a good turner but it has a dangerous stall at slow speeds if pressed over the limit (like the p40).
The p39 can outurn the Bf109 But the 109 is easier to handle in slow speeds and generally outmaneuvers the p39 in scissoring slow and low. Thats why its better to turn in one direction only and if forced to change direction in slow speed, avoid the use of rudder or u will flip and likely not recover if on low altitude (like p40).

A tip is to use the machineguns "mainly" (in the beginning anyway) and the cannon only when directly behind. the 37mm cannon is very hard to aim with and deflection shots are useless generally, but the round goes Flatter than the German 30mm cannon. The german 30mm is a better weapon although it need more deflection it fires rounds in fast succession wich enables hits more often.

The p63 is internally a total redesign although it looks similar to the p39. Generally tougher and faster. other than that in the same category and same tactics and better BnZ qualities.


Another tip is to practice hard turning in slow speeds to "learn" how and where it flips.
Experienced p39 pilots can sometimes even out-scissor a 109.......I know a few.

The 109 and p39 was my favorites from the early days....I still like them even if I seldom fly them nowadays.

Far from a UFO. Those who fly it well have spent hours getting to that point. Yak3P, LA7, KI84 are UFOs, don't confuse aircraft that take some degree of talent with those that only take knowing how to start the engine.

P39 is one of my favourite rides. But mate believe me, if ya wanna go online in that, you better be prepared to run away insanely (and also you must have strong nerves to respawn all the time http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif). I figure offline you will do just fine with it. Just takes a little practice. Main thing is that you don't pull your stick to hard -- ya know when ya hear 'hissing' sound back off a liittle bit --, and engage with high speed and you will be just fine. I'm currently playing campaign with P39 as a main ride... amazing ride if your oppo's are Bf109s and Fw190's (for that period of time that is) you can outsmart them with 'epileptic' manoeuvres... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

look at the bank/slip indicator. the ball and needle need to be centered. if the ball is touchin the right edge of the dash, add right rudder trim till its right in the center...roughly 5-7 clicks. wing trim is more touchy. about 1-2 clicks left wing trim. the wing that drops is the 1 that needs it. u have to trim the tail first, then the wings. if u dont trim the plane level all the way around it will get very unstable as u've already found out. handling will improve drastically. u still need to be gental with it, if it starts to shake, it's gettin close to a stall. let the prop do the work. dont manhandle it and it will do alot better. land on the rear wheels first in the king or u'll bounce like a beach ball down the strip. gunpods in the king not adviseable; added weight and drag affect handling too much for anything except high speed runs, tho u will be able to see the mg fire easier with the pods--cobra's do have that bad muzzle flash u dont have on the 38's.
