No bias please, which is ur favorite national anthem??? I really like the old Soviet one, the music is just so gloriously powerful and so are the lyrics. I really like the German one tho, Deutchland Uber Alles, its the only Anthem I know of thats has nothing to do with war or any sort of strife. Its all about what a great country Germany is, how Germans love their country, and how Germany has the best of everything. German Anthem comes in close 2nd!

Go here to listen to old and new Russian anthems http://www.skazka.no/anthems/
Just click next to one of the Soviet guys to see what I'm talking about, pick one of the pieces performed by an orchestra, those usually sound better. (Especially the ones by the Red Army Chorus)

(No, b4 u guys try to send me to an island to die, I'm not trying to offend anyone nor am I a communist, human nature simply does not allow communism to work in my opinion. I simply think the Soviets has a GREAT anthem http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif)

I really like the "Star Spangled Banner". It's got a melody that spans 3 octaves, making it a challenge to sing well.

And, even though it is a simple description of a battle, it is stirring, especially the line,

"...gave proof through the night that our flag was still there."

There are those in this country that would like the national anthem to be "God Bless America", to get away from the warlike anthem we have now, but I don't know... Francis Scott Key's tune is pretty good...

Being Canadian, I will always remember the old Russian national anthem as played before one of the outstanding Canadian-Russian hockey tournaments. The tension of the moment and the dramatic music of the Russian national anthem prior to 1997 is firmly stuck in my mind.

I'd like to beat you for this nonsense, such igorance really makes me angry.
School German is not enough to understand this anthem.

It was composed in the middle of the 19th century, when there was no Germany, but dozens of German states, which were split up.

Hoffmann's poem, later national anthem with the melody of a part of Hayden's symphony ("God save Franz, the Emperor"), expresses the wish of the German people for a united Germany.
Deutschland über alles (Germany above all) does not mean that Germany is better than any country, but that a united German state is more important than Bavaria, Prussia, Hamburg and so on.

Later on, after Germany finally was united, there were some nationalist interpretations, which are absolutly wrong.

Once and for all, this poem expresses the desire for a united and free country.
Nowadays we sing the third stave only, in which we sing about our quest for a united, free and constitunal state and that this is necessary for happiness.

I think its safe to say that everyone likes their own national anthem best http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

For me...O'Canada is simple, sung in both official languages, and it gets down right to the core of the matter "true north strong and free" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

But everyone should like their national anthem. If they don't...then it needs to go back to the composers. Most national anthems are amongst the best for what they are...

"Grea White North", Bob and Doug McKenzie, Kanada's national anthem...

OT, but once I was at the National War Museum in Ottawa, Ontario, Canda...entering the exhibit of a Mercedes-Benz limo that was used by Hitler (in Austria, during the Aunschluss, I believe), there was vintage music being played over the P.A. My mother, who was born 1927 and lived in Berlin until 1954, started singing along to whatever song it was playing at the time!....Thank goodness no-one else was around!....Lord only knows what the lyrics in the song were!

Thats not true - in my opinion the NA of england is boring. Its slow and isnt very dramatic. Maybe others have different views about it but I think we have one of the worst national anthems. Come on composers think of something most dramatic and lively for meeeeeee!

But, thank you for the history lesson. What is Germany's national anthem and did it change after the reunification?

Yep, cant argue about the Soviet NA. It sounds very powerfull.

I also love the israeli NA(even tough it is a ripp-off of Smetana's "Moldau"). Very dramatic.

Praetor, whatever the history the the German NA may be, and however in came to be, to someone (w/o extensive knowledge of German history) who looks at Germany TODAY and listens the the Anthem TODAY, what I expressed about it in my post is most likely what will be interpreted, and however you want to interpret it it remains a great NA http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As an ex-servicman, military historian and someone who's "traveled around a bit, I've a couple of national anthems I love.

1. La Marseillaise - Stiring, martial, great lyrics of blood, toil and victory and you can certainly march to it.

2. Gimn Sovetskogo soyuza (Soviet National Anthem) - Amazing piece of music written during the Second World War. I love the melody words are pretty lame though.

3. God Bless America - Far superior than the SSB in my opinion. It's melody is NOT based on an old English drinking ditty as is the SPB and you can march to it.

Well, them's me choices.

'Jerusalem' would be best as an English anthem, but otherwise, the old Soviet anthem has got the best tune imho.

'God Save the Queen' is OK but you kind of have to be a roylaist to sing it with pride.

How about posting something i can read then instead of some german jibberish. And explain how am i wrong? Haydn died in 1809. And he must be considered the original composer..therefore the melody cant have been written in the middle 19th century (about 1850). Haydn composed it 1797 (thats the end of 18th century). So im afraid your the one who's wrong. (but dont worry, im far too nice guy to beat up someone for ignorance http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )

"The song's words were penned by the teacher Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben, who had been a fervent supporter of German unity and republican government, and who, because of his activities on behalf of these causes, was forced to flee to the North Sea island of Heligoland, where the verses were actually written. The music is taken from the String Quartet in C major (the Kaiser-Quartet), Op. 76,3 of Joseph Haydn, composed in 1797. It was officially ignored during most of the Second Reich (1871 to 1918), which had no official anthem as such."

How does that explain the following words then: "über alles in der welt"? (all over the world)

My favourite National anthems from a music point of view are definitely the Russian and the French. They are both incredibly powerful.

I'm surprised to hear the number of americans who like their own national anthem (from a music point of view). I think it sounds terrible and it IS terribly difficult to sing, which is why it is so often lampooned in movies etc... - Just some very strange jumps from tone to tone.

I'm Danish, so I like that the Danish national anthem is so forcefully song by all Danish spectators to sports events. In our country EVERYBODY (of Danish descent anyway, immigrants couldn't care less) know the national anthem by heart.

The melody was composed earlier, I may expressed myself wrong, nonetheless the words were written 1841.
So Hoffmann composed it.

Maybe a problem with my english.
My dictonary translates "dichten" (means writing poetry) with to compose.

Wrong translation: above everything in the world is better.
It means that personal affairs, desires or the dictates of a state are not as important as (the idea of) Germany.

While I like The Star Spangled Banner-mainly because I understand the words, the circumstances behind the lyrics, I've been programmed like each of us has, to identify my country's official anthem with my beloved homeland and because I used to be able to hit all the notes not all that long ago, I think it needs to be replaced with something more relevent.

My candidate is "Bad To The Bone" as interpreted by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. It's perfect for singing at football and hockey games, and I'd love to see what some Rhythm and Blues singers could do with it. (sort of like Robin Williams' attitude about the Olympics back in the '80s: "I'd like to see them make Sex an Olympic sport, just to see what the East Germans would do.")

What a great topic since I collect National Anthems!

There should be two catergories, music and lyrics.
Music wise I would go with "God Save The Queen", Lyrics would go (my preference) Soviet (Post WW2) Anthem and United States of America National Anthems. If you would have watched the Anthens Olympics you could admire many other country's national anthems. Each has their special sentiment to it's countrymen.

I was watching a history program a while ago about Georgian Britain, apparantly loads of countries have used the tune of God save the Queen/King at some point, I can't remember the whole list but America, Denmark and Greece sorta spring to mind but there were loads more.

The Tune to Rule Britania is cool even if the words are mega out of date.

Well, I'm partial to the US Anthem, but it is quite hard to sing...as frequently shown by the numerous people who take a lot of artistic license during professional sports games.

But I like the Soviet National Anthem too.

Flower of Scotland is a gem. The British national anthem is to die to and has some very, very dodgy lyrics. The English national anthem is..."ten pints of lager and packet of crips" sung very loudly to the nearest publican. Still, at least we haven't invaded anyone for a while. I do like O' Canada, as well, and sing along with it when I watch hockey games. Won't be doing much of that this year, I guess, huh?

Have to say, my favorite version of "God Save the Queen" is the Sex Pistols' version. That one couplet, "God Save the Queen, she ain't no human bein'" is pure genius. I don't think much of Johnny (Rotten) Lydon as a person, but have to give him credit for that...punk at its absolute best.

'Advance Australia Fair' is a pretty poor national anthem. Slow, difficult to sing, dodgy lyrics and it contains the word 'girt'??? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

Just goes to show how well democracy and the popular vote works really. Ahhh yes, the tyranny of the bell curve. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif It was chosen about 35 years ago by national vote from a list of 4 songs. Among them was 'Waltzing Matilda', based on a poem by A.B. (Banjo) Patterson and it is as close to an unofficial anthem as any nation gets. Besides, its about sheep thievery, resisting arrest, class struggle and suicide. What more can you want?? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

here are the lyrics if your at all interested

Once a jolly swagman camped by a Billabong
Under the shade of a Coolabah tree
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Down come a jumbuck to drink at the water hole
Up jumped a swagman and grabbed him in glee
And he sang as he stowed him away in his tucker bag
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me'".

Up rode the Squatter a riding his thoroughbred
Up rode the Trooper - one, two, three
"Where's that jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?",
"You'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me".

But the swagman he up and jumped in the water hole
Drowning himself by the Coolabah tree,
And his ghost may be heard as it sings in the Billabong,
"Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?"

Just did some research in order to flesh out my ignorance.

'God Save the Queen' was the national anthem till 1977 when 'Advance Australia Fair' was chosen by plebiscite. But it wasn't until the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles that it was ever played as a national anthem!

Good Grief. No wonder Aussies sound like they have been gagged with wet rags when we sing it. Its only been around for 20 years. Maybe in another 20 i'll be a bit more fond of it.

As for my favs well I do like a WELL played God Save the Queen, even if i dont enjoy the sentiment or letter of the lyrics. The Russian national Anthem is great. Anyone remember the scene from 'The Hunt For Red October'? Quite stirring stuff.

The Kiwis have their own unofficial anthem BTW. Its the Maori 'Haka', a traditional war chant turned into a rugby song. It is also about the most frightening way to welcome an opponent onto the field of play without having to resort to ritual sacrifice or doing something strange with a chicken.

Jerusalem stirs my blood when its comes to an anthem. I think it actually is one for us, but God save the Queen kind of takes it over as its alot more know and easier to sing, still don't know the words though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'm American, but I think the Star Spangled Banner pales in comparison to the older Soviet anthem. Not in terms of what each talks about in the song, just the Soviet one is much more stirring IMHO.

Never really thought much about it until now, but I guess my choices would be the following. Russian, French, German, Canadian, and then Japanese which no one has mentioned yet. It's a somewhat melancholy tune, but it kind of grew on me, having listened to it many times while I was stationed in Japan.

Beat me to it. If that's the Japanese NA for the Japanese campaign, It's pretty cool. The one playing for Germany is uplfting. So is the Russian. I like the SSB, but God Bless America wouldn't be bad either. 'course We Will Rock/ We are the Champions would be nice as would Anthem by Rush.

"Flower of Scotland" "oh Canada" and "Amazing Grace" played by over 1000 'pipes and drums at the 1977 Canadian Expo in Toronto in the stadium under many colored lights on a warm, shirt sleeve summer night.... they marched in and filled the floor.. Royal Bagpipers from Scotland, Ireland and Canada...1000 pipes and 1000 drummers. Oh My God. What a thunderous and smooth and stirring and powerful sound.

Then these multi colored spotlights begin to sweep around over them and they played those Anthems and those songs that are written for the 'pipes. I will never forget the feeling of the hair rising on my arms and the back of my neck or the vibration and thrill of that music in my chest....No wonder they are used in battle.

Hearing a recording or seeing a few pipers and drummers can never compare with what I was fortunate enough to witness that long ago summer night when I was 17.

Amazing Grace?

That is, without a doubt, the all time worst song ever penned. Filled to the brim with catholic guilt, ('a wretch like me'?? Come on, dude, get some self-respect!) I cringe every time I hear that abomination played or sung, and have amended my will to expressly forbid its performance at my last rites.

Played with bagpipes, easily the most tune-deaf instrument ever vomited forth from the highlands, it's just salt in the wound.

I remember when I lived in San Francisco, I lived across the street from a park, and some arsehole used to play "Amazing Dreck" on his pipes. Good thing we had an assault weapon ban, or I might have had to take matters into my own hands. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif

Well, being Mexican I obiously love the Mexican National Anthem. But aside from that my personal favorite is the Italian National Anthem. It's so livley, so full of rythem, much like the MNA. Second comes the French NA and the the Soviel NA.

I quite like God Save The Queen and I really like Land Of Hope And Glory. It annoys me no end when people say our national anthem and flag make them think of the BNP and football hooligans. It means that those racist bastards have taken something away from us http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/52.gif

I don't like the German national anthem for 1 simple reason... I'm bloody sick of it every time Schumacher wins! Hi,

My favourite 3 would be:

1. "Ey, Iran". The Iranian national anthem.
2. "Patriotic Song". The North Korean national anthem from 1947, and:
3. "These Golden Valleys". Uzbekistan's national anthem.

1) Germany: That Haydn's melody from "Emperor" quartet is marvelous.
2) Soviet Union
3) God save the Queen: Johann Christian Bach stole it from Handel, who stole it from Arne, who stole it from Lully, who stole it who knows where.
4) Old DDR
5) Horst Wessel. Yes, I know, it is more nazi than Hitler weaving a swastika, but music is nice. And Spanish Army used it unadvertedly -with other lyrics- as the Engineer Corps Anthem till the late 80s...

BTW, did you know that Spanish National Anthem -ugly as it is- is one of the more ancient -circa 1710- and has no lyrics at all? It is based on a Grenadier military march, and has the structure of a minuet.

It's rather embarrasing when in sport events everybody sing heartedly their Anthems, and our sportsmen just can stare one each other...

One thing else... not much ago our sportsmen played in Australia, and the local musicians played the Spanish Anthem they did know... it was the 'Hymn of Riego', a rather combative Republican anthem that was the NA during the Spanish Republic in the 30s -before SCW. Spain is now a monarchy, and you can guess the faces of our politic representatives during the performance. Half way between indignation and laughter... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

The national anthem of Novistrana is much better than most of the real ones. Check it out at www.novistrana.com (http://www.novistrana.com)

Hi guys!

As an Australian of mixed British/South African descent, I was nevertheless happy when Australia did away with 'God Save Our Queen' as our National Anthem.

But I wasn't happy with the replacement. Hardly anyone I know likes it. The problem is more with the words than with the tune. School children are now encouraged to embrace it, but most adults find it difficult to sing, especially the line that goes something like "Our land is girt by sea".

C'mon now, who in the English speaking world uses the word 'girt' in everyday language?

I've always like the anthem the Russians used during the Soviet era and the French anthem. I'll never like ours but perhaps in another 30-50 years, when all the old farts like me have gone, 'Advance Australia Fair' will be more widely accepted.

There's a song called 'I Am Australian'. It would probably need some modification (trimming down) to make it suitable as an anthem, but I find the tune appealing and the words stirring in places. The chorus goes......

"We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on Earth we come
We'll share a dream and sing with one voice
I am, you are, we are Australian"

Of course, the problem is finding something acceptable to the majority... but this song certainly gets me in!

Best regards to all,

Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' s one of my favourtie pieces of music ayway, but as a European anthem (with no words to cause language issues/ arguments) it is utterly unrivalled.

I'm waiting for someone to start an online petition to have England's National Anthem changed from God Save The Queen to Jerusalem. I s'pose I'd settle for Land of Hope and Glory, but Jerusalem's my first choice. Probably too 'controversial' nowadays though...

I would never vote God Save the Queen, although i am british. I just dont like the monarchy and the song is rubbish.
I would say the Russian National anthem, its loud and very impressive.

But of coarse my pick is the SSB....

Coming in second is the Soviet National anthem, not for the words, which I know none, but it just sounds so good.

-edit: I believe that the Federation uses the same tune, maybe slightly different words.

How can there be any doupt ...

it must be the " Ode an die Freude " from Beethoven , the anthem of europe http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

1.
Freude, sch¶ner G¶tterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium!
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, Dein Heiligtum.
Deine Zauber binden wieder,
was die Mode streng geteilt,
alle Menschen werden Brüder,
wo Dein sanfter Flügel weilt.
Seid umschlungen, Millionen!
Diesen Kuß der ganzen Welt!
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muß ein lieber Vater wohnen,
Brüder, überm Sternenzelt
muß ein lieber Vater wohnen!

2.
Wem der große Wurf gelungen,
eines Freundes Freund zu sein,
wer ein holdes Weib errungen,
mische seinen Jubel ein!
Ja, wer auch nur eine Seele
sein nennt auf dem Erdenrund!
Und wer's nie gekonnt, der stehle
weinend sich aus diesem Bund!
Was den großen Ring bewohnet,
huldige der Sympathie.
|: Zu den Sternen leitet sie,
wo der Unbekannte thronet. :|

3.
Freude heißt die starke Feder
in der ewigen Natur;

4.
Freude sprudelt in Pokalen;
in der Traube goldnem Blut
trinken Sanftmut Kannibalen,
die Verzweiflung Heldenmut. -
Brüder, fliegt von euren Sitzen,
wenn der volle R¶mer kreist;
laßt den Schaum zum Himmel spritzen:
dieses Glas dem guten Geist!
Den der Sterne Wirbel loben,
den des Seraphs Hymne preist,
dieses Glas dem guten Geist
überm Sternenzelt dort oben!

5.
Festen Mut in schweren Leiden,
Hilfe, wo die Unschuld weint,
Ewigkeit geschwornen Eiden,
Wahrheit gegen Freund und Feind,
M¤nnerstolz vor K¶nigsthronen -
Brüder, g¤lt's Gut und Blut:
dem Verdienste seine Kronen,
Untergang der Lügenbrut!
Schließt den heilgen Zirkel dichter!
Schw¶rt bei diesem goldnem Wein,
dem Gelübde treu zu sein,
schw¶rt es bei dem Sternenrichter!

Well, to be honest I haven't heard too many Anthems. Growing up in Canada, with a hatred of Hockey and Baseball having priority on TV, I have a strong dislike for national anthems. Maybe I was scarred for life. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif
What's worse is living in China and seeing people shed tears when they hear their national anthem. Makes me nausious.

They said DIE for your country, not CRY for your country! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/51.gif
