It's a QF-106 target drone. Radio controlled from the ground.

Yes its a drone..
looks like either a Delta Dart or Delta Dagger - never could remember the difference.
Probably the US's only foray into delta winged aircraft.

An F106 drone. *sigh* Such a sad way to go for such a sweet lookin' plane /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif .

The last two Guard Units to have 'em were the 186th Fighter Squadron in Montana and the 102nd Fighter Wing here in Massachusetts, they were traded in for F16s and F15s respectively in the mid-late 80's if I remember right.

They were equiped to carry the Genie nuclear air-to-air missile to attack large Russian bomber formations in the 50's.

In a couple of years they'll probably be using F-16s for that. It's enough to make a grown man cry.

Violent ending for such beautiful things. But saddly its the only way of effectively testing new munitions during evaulations. They don't use the unmanned drones for pilot/ weap op training because it would be far too expensive and one would quickly run out of old aircraft for this purpose.

Honestly is being scattered across the new mexico desert any worse than the vast planes of rusty B-29s, B-17s, P-51s, P-47s after WW2 sitting in the desert?

Back in the day we used to see those, 102s and f101 voodoos fly over here. Once I actually saw - and I kid you not - and Avro Vulcan flying over leelanau county - amazing. (figured it was just the Canadians invading again) Occassional b-57s too. The B-58 was a rather amazing monster - I don't recall ever seeing one though.

Clyde !!!!....U shock me ! /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

The "muffler bearings" u refer too is infact nothing less than combustion spoilers and the "reverse flams" can never be inverted. They are just bent along the ventral pylonchord to meet an axial differential of 3,5 degrees acording to the R.E.S sheme.

Also "the Delta Darts" was a popular ladies countryband wich often used "bass Pommers" and "crumhorns" to add that special southern flavor.

What u actually saw on that picture was a converted Fiat merged with a maximum trimmed Cessna Aircomet with low res textures and a fake background. (8 bit graphics can easily fool the eye).

I was in NZ recently and saw an L-39 at Wanaka. It amused me that the most capable combat aircraft in the country was privately owned!
