crispau,
The best place to look is the uboat.net, this is the link to the http://uboat.net/types/index.html (U-Boat Types)

In short...
II is a Coastal boat
VII is a Atlantic boat
IX is a Long Range boat
XXI is a Elektro boat

The Type XXI was the most advanced u-boat/submarine of its era. Often critism of its construction (the poor construction was due to lack of the correct materials, skilled labour & allied bombing) is used to rubbish its design. This u-boat did not see action and only one went on patrol with the 2nd one travelling to Norway when the war ended (I think?). They had 6 forward torpedo tubes which were hydraulically loaded/ All 6 tubes could be loaded within 10 minutes (someone confirm this for me).

I am disappointed not to see the Type XXIII that did see action and sink several ships without being successfully counter attacked.

Cheers,

Teddy B¤r

I would really like to see the Type 23 also.

And the Germans also used the Type 2 in the Atlantic once they won the Biscay ports.
