View Full Version : Is a flyable FB B17 worth dreaming about???

I just reinstalled B-17 "The Mighty Eighth" since all the B17 talk around here sparked my old love affair with the bird. Unfortunately I was disappointed since I have been spoiled from the great graphics enjoyed in FB. I guess I was naive to think that the experience in B-17 "The Mighty Eighth" would be the same as FB but it has been a long time. Those memories of how cool I thought B-17 was when I first saw it were all that I was thinking of as I reinstalled it. Don't get me wrong, B17 was a great sim when it first came out. Time marches on however and it just doesn't match up to what we have today.

Now with that being said, a flyable B17 in FB is like the "Holy Grail" that was missing from B-17 "The Mighty Eighth". Thats right, multiplayer. The lack of multiplayer in that sim was it's downfall and was the main factor that let down the fan base. A flyable B17 in FB would make reality what everyone was hoping for in "The Mighty Eighth"

I know Oleg and team could do it. They did the He-111. All they would have to do is model more gun positions and two more engines. However there has been no talk about it in the dev updates. What is about to be released is surely AI only. Do they think there is not enough public interest? If cost of development is concerned then make it a payware addon.

The ultimate B17 sim would be one where you could leave your position (seat) and walk around the plane in first person mode! I WOULD PAY BIG BUCKS FOR THIS! If there was a damaged component you would have to find it and fix it with your trusty wrench "BF1942 style!". No one has ever even talked about developing such a sim though. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Oh well. What have you guys heard? Is it worth becoming a "flyable B17" whiner?

I've said since the original IL2 that the addition of a "flyable" B-17 would be the coups de gras for this game. I can only hope that with the developement of the new BoB sim, that there will be an expansion pack to include more of the planes that were used in the skies over Europe and that it will include all of the big bombers that played such a critical role. (i.e. B-17, B-24, Lancaster, B-26 etc,...)

id like to see a flyable b-17. i dont know about the idea with walking around in the inside tho. its not really a first person shooter, its a flight sim. i used to like bf1942, but now the lack of realism kinda gets to me. the ultimate game in my opinion would be a game like bf1942 only on a much larger scale. very large maps such as in il2, only being able to be in anything u want from fighters, to bombers, to tanks, to battleships. the battleships would have many bots running around doing different things so u get the feel of a real ship, and tanks would have realistic strengths, speeds, and equipment. no computer could handle a game like this today, but i can only hope for it someday.

I can't wait for the B-17, however w/ the high alt. FM as-is, The B-17 won't live up to it's true glory.

Well, don't get me wrong. Walking around inside the B17 is beyond the scope of FB. However you could watch the guys walk around in that goofy 3rd person, 2D background "set" B-17 "The Mighty Eighth" had. I always wished that they had made that a 3D, first person environment.

That is whole other sim though. I am just hoping for a flyable B17 that works like the He-111 in FB.

I'd LOVE to be able to fly the B-17 again too. Although the ground detail in B17-II was sparse and doesn't compare with what we're spoilt with now, the game was very immersive.

Personally, I'm ok with a non flyable B-17 in FB because I feel that to truly do the flyable one justice, it should be an add on for BoB. Based on the little information we have on BoB, a B-17 add on for that game should be awesome.

I think I already said that... /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

To address the "walk-around" comment, I think the internals and full model could be done if they were only to model the different positions and NOT the walkways etc,... I don't feel it would be an injustice and would allow it to be a more immersive, strategic addition to the game..BoB, that is.

I would assume it will be in BoB release, since thats not till what 2004, 2005? that should give them time to model inside and out

A flyable fortress would be a blast but it takes a helluva time to make happen.

Oleg and team didn't do the He 111, I guess because they didn't have the time for it. It was made by a 3rd party developer/developers (Xanty I think)

If it was to be, it would open up a whole new aspect of the game. Manned bomber boxes against manned fighters with manned fighter escorts......

Well I can dream can't I /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Its seems like the really good stuff was made by third party modelers, hopefully the b17 will become flyable since cfs3 had a pretty descent one im sure people will want to top cfs3 in here, the b24 seems that it will become flyable and it looks great.

I hope the modelers get most of the money for this payware planes pack and maybe it will bring more freeware ones.

yeah man, dreaming is cool

that is the only reason I still fly janes WWII fighters still; plunging through a box of 24s and 17s in my 109, taking off wings as I pass, diving through the cloud blanket to safety

The gun turrets would be interesting to do more than anything- they're powered (apart from waist), all other guns are manual control. How would you do the rhymic turning effects as opposed to throw a manually controlled guna round. All is the engines get hit what about loosing power to what ever turrets /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I dont really care for the multis one way or another as flyable...but for the sake of those who do it would be nice...I will be glad to get the B-17 in here period.....flyable would be nice. I would like to be able to fly as many WW2-late 1940s-early 50s (before the fly by wire stuff took over) AC in here as possible. I love the FMs and DMs..... it would be nice.

I do miss a posting in here that says: "FOR NOW, I'm happy we will get the B-17 G as an ai plane, and I will fly it no-matter-what".

See my thread about this!

Having B-17 would be nice (like having many other planes too), but Maddox Games don't have the resources to do it.

It would need to be a 3rd party modeller, or preferably group of modellers. Otherwise it will not happen...

Big handicap of a B-17 would be the relative weak high altitude of modeling in FB, since doing justice to the high altitude combat of WW2 would require a better flight/psysics model.

BoB is promised to have said superior modeling.

So it might be "fun" to have, it will not be a good simulation of ETO high alt. air combat.

Funny thing about all this B-17 talk is that there were no B-17s ( at all ) in the eastern front. This is an eastern front sim. Let them make a new sim altogether if you want a
B-17. There's no high altitude model in this sim anyway.
How would I even get my 262 up high enough to shoot down one of those juicy B-17s??? As things are right now, it would never make it up there. Well maybe it would but it would just barely crawl along, with no ability to manuever at all.

Lol Mortoma. IL-2 Sturmovik was eastern front.

FB has its main focus on it, but is not restricted to it. Unless of course you would say the coming Normandy map is eastern front, too.

Besides, check FB's box. You won't find any indication that it is eastern front only.

And if you dislike the coming B-17 (will be in the free addon as ai plane) that much, I suggest you dont download and install the patch.

- Future

P.S.: Besides, you have forgotten that NO plane in FB can fly at the "real" altitude the original B-17s operated in. In fact, they will also be flying much lower in FB, maybe not much higher than Pe-8s or He-111s.

I'd love to take some 17's up on a mission.. I can see the Focke Wulf pilots licking their chops now, sigh.... But then by then we'll have the Mustang and will be bombing from 30k. Seems like a lot of folks will start having to fly high altitude though many fights might end up on the deck out of desperation.

Well I have the CFS3 B17G from AvHistory. These are the peeps who are working on fixing all the crap thats bogus with CFS3. They make all the 1% planes. Now before I get flamed for talking about CFS3 in here, I just wanted to give you a taste of what I was going thru last night.

Bombing run on some German AC factory in....hell cant remember, other than it was 211 miles from the start point to the IP. 8 Flights of 8 B17s stacked at 500 ft and 1/4 mile trailing. NO escort. I'm lead plane (gee thanks).

1st Run....survive to IP...Flack nails me...death sprial for 28,000 feet.

2nd Run.....FW190 gaggle jumps us, head on high. Top turret bags a FW (had to be a golden BB).....which proceeds to cartwheel into my plane about mid-ship.....death sprial for 28,000 feet.

3rd Run.....MISSED damnit.....death sprial for 28,000 feet just because I was mad I blew it.

4th Run.....Gunners bag 2 190's (Ball and Left Waist)....about 1 minute from release, flack blows the damn wing off..........death sprial for 28,000 feet.

5th Run....Not kidding here. Flack gets both left Engines...they are hurting and smokeing. I continue thru IP and into the bomb run. My flight is overtaking me, I am lower and slower. 2nd flight overtakes me at, yep release point.....I get killed by 12 500lbs'ers....death sprial for 28,000 feet.

I went to bed after that, but guess what I'm doing when I get home from work? I love IL2FB and all but damnit sometimes I need to put down the vodka and fly good old american sheetmetal around.
