Probably Win2k. XP isn't bad if you want to spend a lot of time 'triming the fat'. If you are using a monster computer, there isn't much need in tweaking it unless you get random stutters and such.

I usually employ low-end hardware for servers and trim the OS down for efficiency. Win2k does a good job in these scenarios, while Linux is better when the game-server supports it (not the case here).

For the record, Gentoo Linux, while not for newbies, would be the best distro for hosting games because of its flexibility and super-trimmed state after an install. If your after the ultimate of ultimate game servers, and you get lucky, a customized FreeBSD install, with linux-compat will outperform any OS.

Win2k or 2000 server. Both are very good. I`m running dedicated on XP PRO tho.

Hello All,

Now perhaps we need also some tips about tuning dedicated server for best perfo regarding the network
I've ADSL 128Kb Up and I'm not able to host more than 9 layers
Over I can see pings growing. (with dedicated Server mémory needed is 156Mb and AMD 2000Hz cpu use is < 5% for 10 players)
Perhaps need info about ADSL config also for better performaces ...

Thanks

I think you mean 768 down and 128 up.
Up to 10 players should run ok I'd say?

Tho kernel 2.6 looks to match bsd and outperform it in areas, had sum scalbitly write up sum where. If u reallly wanted an ulta trimmed down server LFS is the way to go, i know a guy that had a LFS distro u can make em really small.
