View Full Version : What plane took out the most JU88s?

I was just wondering this. I've most often attacked them with IL2s, sometimes with rockets, sometimes not. The IL2 seems good because it's a lot more durable than some other birds.

Anyone know what planes actually had the greatest success?

That's a type of statistic I don't think I've ever heard of. Does there have to be a statistic for everything?

I figure the plane that took it out the most was determined by what planes where available to shoot at it and not which were the most suited to the task. For instance, in 1940 I'll bet it was the Hurricane.

In BoB i think Hurricanes took out the most everything( well bombers, perhaps fighters too)
and before someone say - 'in BoB spits took on escorts while Hurris took on bombers' - yes i know /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Exactly. I've bought a video tape about hurricanes, the purpose of this tape is to tell the sluggish hurricanes should not be forgotten, they've taken out lots of enemy planes than spits, although lack of performance. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

HarHar, I got it /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

It's an interesting question though. I would say Hurricane in BoB would be correct. But the Ju88 served in so many roles and in so many theatres it may be hard to figure the rest out.

Probably would be best to study Ju88 Orders of Battle and deployment. That could take some time.

The Ju88 did everything well except defend itself with alot of guns IMO. Shame on them for not defending such a beautiful a/c better.

There is an interesting archival film of a British nightfighter approaching a Ju-88 from behind and then opening fire. I don't know where you could find it on the internet, but it's been featured a few times on History Channel documentaries.

I personally think that the Luftwaffe really got it right with their bomber design. Having heavy bombers armed with a dozen heavy machine guns is impressive, but it doesn't lend itself well to the versatility that planes like the Ju-88 enjoyed.

On the whole, WWII medium bombers were probably the most effective aerial weapons, and the Ju-88 was the best of the bunch early on.
