Well, since we had a Going To Dallas thread, I'm going to Houston in August, mainly for the Phillies - Astros series. I'm already planning on going the Space Center and a day trip to Galveston. Any other good places to go, to eat, sightsee, etc. I'll be there for a week.

The traffic in Houston sucks.

Might want to check this place out while in Galveston.

While visiting the LSFM, you can stop in at Moody Gardens, its next door. The aquarium and rainforest pyramid are terrific, pass on the other stuff.

BTW, if you are planning on rooting for the fillies, please don't sit anywhere near me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

and i couldn't resist....think dean martin singing....

Well, it's lonesome in this big town,
Ev'rybody puts me down,
I'm a face without a name,
Just a-walkin' in the rain...
Going back to HOUSTON,
HOUSTON,
HOUSTON.
Got holes in both of my shoes,
I'm a walkin' case of the blues,
Saw a dollar yesterday,
But the wind blew it away...
Going back to HOUSTON,
HOUSTON,
HOUSTON.
Haven't eaten in about a week,
I'm so hungry when I walk I squeak,
Nobody calls me friend,
It's sad the shape I'm in...
Going back to HOUSTON,
HOUSTON,
HOUSTON.
Got a girl waitin' there for me,
At least she said she's be,
Got a home and a big warm bed,
And a feather pillow for my head...
Going back to HOUSTON,
HOUSTON,
HOUSTON.
Take a bus, or take an ole frieght train,
Thumb a ride or walk, it's all the same,
Going back where they know my face,
And I'm never gonna leave that place...
Going back to HOUSTON,
HOUSTON,
HOUSTON.

When in Galveston, eat at Gaido's on the sea wall. It has really great seafood and has been there 100 years or so.

Check out the railroad museum as well. It's at the end of the Strand which is the tourist shopping district in Galveston.

Houston-go to Goode Company BBQ on Kirby just south of U.S. 59. Boththe Bushes like it a lot.

There has been real development in downtown Houston over the past few years. There are lots of clubs and restaurants.

Go to the original Ninfa's on Navigation, in the Barrio. It is the original Ninfa's restaurant and is excellent. Yeah, it looks a bit rundown but it's really good.

Check out the Galleria. A great big shooping center on Westheimer just west of the 610 West loop. Shops, people watching, food, etc.

Be very, very careful of drinking and driving. The cops have no tolerance and it will take a minimum of a day to get bailed out. A friend of mine can attest to this personally.

My favorite restaurant is Trattoria Pasquales on Montrose in the museum district. Superb Italian food in an informal setting. Jeans are fine. The seafood is out of this world as is the Osso Bucco if they have it. Not cheap but worth every dollar.

Traffic is not good, but I've seen worse. I go to Houston for business or pleasure on average of once a week. My wife and I both like the city. You can find almost anything there that you can in New York with the exception of Broadway Theater. Nothing compares with New York for that!

Good luck!

Houston actually has some very good theatres. College of the Mainland puts on some pretty good shows on the regular basis. I recommend visiting LSFM, moody gardens, the space center (duh!) and looking around galveston. The water and beach suck royally but there are plenty of interesting tourist shops along the shore. BTW I live on the SE side of houston. Astroworld (theme park) can be fun too, but beware it has huge lines for all the rides.

Edit: about driving, drive defensively but remember the best defense is often a good offense. Run the bastard off the road http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif. I'm not really kidding either, you really do have to be a little aggressive if you want to go anywhere in Hoston. One more thing, beware the white or baby blue Crown Victoria's, those are often unmarked cop cars and they love to give tickets.

Gaido's is really good but pricey. I burned 2 rolls of film @ Lonestar Flight Museum. First thing I noticed about their planes were pans under the engines. Then I remembered they still fly 'em and need to keep the floor clean. Check out the Elyssa and the Texas Seaport Museum, pier 21 I think. The Battleship Texas and the San Jacinto Monument are down HWY 225 east exit battleground rd to the left. Be warned that the ship is for short people so watch out. On the plus side main turret # 2 is open and so is the engine room. Watch your speed on 225 thru Pasadena & esp. thru Deer Park, they write tickets, but Deer Park is worse. You might check out the Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo, they are pretty close together.

I can't believe I forgot about the battleship Texas and the San Jacinto monument, shame on me http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/1072.gif. Those two are just as good as LFSM and Nasa.

One more suggestion.

If you enjoy Thai food, try "The Golden Room" on Montrose. Absolutely the best I have ever had.
