Hello,

Something weird about the 2 20mm cannons on this plane, 50% of the time they explode and penetrate a plane at close range, but the other 50% of the time they only seem to scratch the enemy plane. When shooting farther then 400 m they only scratch, no exploding.
Why are these guns acting like this, and did some1 test if this scratching is actually doing the same damage as an explosion?

Are you saying that the rounds that you see that hit are exploding 50% of the time?

If so, have you considered that what you see and what the game calculates as having happened are not always the same thing?

Actually the cannons (ShVaK) are quite correctly modelled...

The reason why you get explosions AND these "scratching" stuff is that the cannons fire several different types of ammunition such as:

-AP Armour Piercing Shell
-API Armour Piercing Incendiary Shell
-APIT Armour Piercing Incendiary Tracer Shell
-HE High Explosive Shell
-HEI High Explosive Incendiary Shell
-HEIT High Explosive Incendiary Tracer Shell

Armour Piercing Shells only penetrate their target without exploding. If they do not hit any vital parts they are pretty useless - at least in small concentration http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
High Explosive Shells have TNT or some other sort of explosive charge which explodes when hitting hard surfaces - some even have special detonators that will make them explode when hitting liquid substances (like fuel or oil)

SO: no, there is nothing wrong with it...

The Shvak is mostly AP. I think only 1 out of 3 is explosive.

This can be good, as AP is more effective against armor and other hard things, like engines or internal structure.

You'll probably notice on the 3U, the La-5, and the La-7 that the guns fire different colored tracers (if you look closely - or press the pause button after firing for a while).

Those are the different types of rounds hitting. Some of them as mentioned are explosive and some are armor piercing. Different types of damage. Both can be equally deadly.
