View Full Version : Mechanical Failures?

Hi all. New to the forum all played the game for a while now. Everytime I play it amazes me! It's soo good! Just wondering though, I play with pretty much all the realistic settings on (except ammo - I know its cheating but cant stand to run out of ammo in a dogfight! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ). Are mechanical failures common? I took off in a 109 (think it was a G7 or something) and just following in formation when the engine started grinding really badly (as if it had been overheating for a while).

Has anyone else had this often? Any cures? Don't mind just bizzare that it happens so soon. Am I doing something wrong?

Cheers all.

Rob

You probably overrevved it, it tends to dislike that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-tongue.gif.

Ahh, interesting. Thanks. Only took off on bout 90-100% but could have been trying to catch up to formation http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

Cheers mate.

Am I doing something wrong?

Yes. If you didn't take any damage, and your engine quits, its something you did. Check the obvious first:

Are you running out of fuel?
The Bf 109s don't have any excess of fuel capacity, and if you are flying for a while or leave without full tanks (especially if you fly around at full throttle), it is likely you will run out of fuel, although that usually makes the engine just stop.

Are you running the engine too hot? Have you gotten overheat messages? Do you leave the radiator open or on auto? Are you climbing at low airspeed with high power?

Do you take off as soon as your engine starts? I heard somewhere that the need for proper engine warmup is modelled to a small degree in game. The DB600-series engines are perhaps the most touchy about proper warmup than the others, as they well should be.

Are you using prop pitch incorrectly and running the engine too fast for extended periods?

Are you using WEP (of whatever form) too long or too often?

Warmed up for about 3 or 4 mins (while others took off). Prop pitch 100% (is this correct? I assume it is). Bout 100% throttle take off. Often use radiator open 2 or 4 for take off. No overheat warning. All was going fine till just started grinding a bit. Was literally about 2 minutes after take off so plenty of fuel.

Cheers

Why use manual prop pitch when the BF109's had auto prop pitch?

I think your problem is right there and you make the engine give a higher RPM then it can handle.

Did you engage the MW50 system whilst at full throttle? In my experience this tends to cause problems similar to what you mention.

IIRC the MW50 boost should only be engaged at low throttle settings.

LoL. Okay, cheers mate. What do you suggest then. I could have understood better if you wrote with hyroglyphics(sp) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

And steve_v... there is a benefit of using unlimited ammo then http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

NO! That's your problem. While engines in planes like the 190 can handle 100% prop pitch while not overrevving, the 109's engine will over rev due to the blades pitch. Basically the blades are "biting" the air the least amount when on 100% prop pitch, so there's less resistance for the blades to move. This means its easier for the engine to revolve, in fact its too easy. This results in the engine turning so fast that it damages itself and will soon become inoperable. Set it to keep your RPM's at a steady rate (can't remember exactly what it should be in the 109-I'm a 190 pilot) but it's probably around 3000-3200 RPM's. In level flight 80% seems to work well. At this setting, the propeller is "biting" into the air more, thus there is more resistance to engine revolutions due to the air. This means the engine wont over rev. Its sorta like the gears on a bike...if you stay in gear one while flying down a hill, you can spin you pedals quite fast without any sort of resistance. Its the same reason why engines over rev and why you need to adjust prop pitches in dives and climbs.

Hope I helped, I'm not the best at explaining things though.

S!

Hutch

No cheers mate, that is helpful. Learnig curve. This is really interesting! Who needs an OU course http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

So how can you set the optimum pitch on any aircraft for that matter? Do you use in conjunction with the RPM an set acording to optimum RPM at cruising or whatever (if any of that made sense!)

Cheers.

PS - Similar query. How can you recover when the I-53 cuts out in negative-g turns? Even after ditching the engine will not restart.

Very helpful guys.. keep it coming http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have a 56K modem and I basically never play offline, only online. As long as the connection is good and stable you will be fine.

I used to have mechanical problems with the 109. I would be in formation or a dogfight and the engine would just quit. I talked to a bunch of guys and we couldn't find the problem. Finally I just reinstalled and never had the problem again. Interestly, I also had no sound when I looked to the left. We tried to fix that but never could. Once I installed the last patch the problem was gone. See, Oleg is a god http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
