Sorry it's not IL2-related, but I know there are many of you with varied game interests.
I just ran the demo of Medieval Total War and I understand the Rome version demo is issued tomorrow. I never thought I'd be remotely interested in such games, but after watching BBC's Time Commanders programme here in the UK I found it all rather interesting (usual Brit understatement).
Can anyone recommend the best games or demos to try? I fancy WW1 or 2 battles provided the graphics are good, although any decent battle games would be worth a look. I read somewhere there's a flurry of tank simulations out now or shortly to come out. Anywhere I can search for these?
Your help would be appreciated - and sorry again it's http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/353.gif

I always enjoyed Sudden Strike; not especially realistic but an absolute blast - you shd be able to pick it up cheap, though the add ons weren't great. Earth 2150 a long time ago was OK and think there's been another war based rts issued recently though its name eludes me.

In my own opinion, you'll really have a hard time beating the Total War series. These games are extremely well put together and have a scope that is difficult to match. Shogun was good, Medieval was great, Rome is expected to be amazing. Sorry no WWII, but if any of the subject matter even remotely interests you, you can't lose.

Knew I could rely on this community to offer ideas. I'm heading over to the various sites recommended for a look-see. It sometimes makes sense to take a break from flying just to try other forms of mental exercise, although I expect to be up in my Hurri a bit later on.

Well it's kind of real time and kind of turn based but the Combat Mission (http://www.battlefront.com/products/cmak/cmak.html) series from Battlefront (http://www.battlefront.com/) come highly recommended. I say they are part real tiem and part turn based because the decision making is made in turns then the results of the decisions and moves made during those phases are played out infront of you in 3D. Some don't like it but it does make for careful planning. Because it's turn based you can play by e-mail or connect online via IP as you would other games.

WW2 RTS:

Blitzkrieg is a great title, but dont buy it for multiplayer as that part has been really poor from the beginning. But for singeplayer its a game very worth getting.
Watch out for addons like Burning horizon though, those are not that great IMO, and there's alot of missions downloadable for Blitzkrieg, so there's no need buying BH just for more missions.

SuddenStrike combined with its addon SSF is brilliant, especially for multiplayer. And its still being played. Takes some time to get into though. And there's loads of missions to be downloaded for it, so its good for singleplayer as well.

If you go for one game I'd go for Blitzkrieg, has great graphics, just dont touch multiplayer. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I used to enjoy playing RTS more than I do now, i'm not sure why that is. I think the best I have played were Earth 2150 and AoE2. 2150 was one of the first RTS's to use a 3D engine and that really apealled to me, it looked great. Another positive was that individual units could be customised and improved to quite an extent, there were many options and combinations. AoE2 was and still is a classic but unfortunatly a little old now. I never caught on to StarCraft, Warcraft or the Red Alert/Command and Conqure series, they just seem too simplified, but multiplayer is still fun from time to time.

I would recommend you take a look at Rome: Total War. I didn't play the previous two games, but from what i've seen of the Rome, it looks impressive. Up to 10,000 units on screen!http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Have to ask: Any word on a PC release for GTA San Andreas? I've heard May 2005, PC better get it!

Medieval: Total War is one of my all-time favorite games, still play it regularly and enjoy the political intrigue and empire building as much as the battles.

If you do decide you like Soldiers: Heroes of WWII, Play.com are selling it for 17:99 - I'm assuming you're a Brit as I don't thiink they ship to the U.S.

I only have the demo, it comes with one mission which seems impossible. But it looks so good I keep on trying. I hope the full version is a bit more playable. You can't expect a team of 10 soldiers with one Sherman to win from 30+ German soldiers with tanks and APC's. Unfortunately, that seems to be the mission.

Well, then expect worse.A team of 2 people armed with hand guns,to rescue 2 spetsnatz against a german infantry company and 3-4 heavy vehicles.
That's the 2nd Russian mission.
You can have also a single tank against a village held by Americans where there are a dozen shermans ,not counting the bazooka people.
Or,rescue at least 6 American paras against a German batallion near Nijmegen.
The demo mission seems simple now , after playing few missions in the full game http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif. Peeze of cake I should say.

The 2 best WW II RTS games are undoubtebly
1. Panzers
http://www.panzers.com/
2. Soldiers: Heroes of WW II
http://www.codemasters.co.uk/soldiers/

I prefer the latter, because of the incredible damage effects, good action, splendid graphics and cool, realistic gameplay.
Of course Panzers is cool to, but I don't really like it that much, I don't know why. Let's just call it a feeling!!

Yes,almost forgot about damage effects in Soldiers, they are astounding! Never seen something like that in a RTS. Basically you can destroy ANYTHING. Is a joy to make a path in the forest with a Tiger.Trees falling, sound realistic and every goodie.Or to enter with a tank in a house http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
BTW,there are few planes in the game,FW190,Mustang,C47 and few others. Flight model looks OK to me.Polished.To bad you can't fly them http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Soldiers WW2 demo is challenging - can't quite get the hang of moving things where I want, but I do like the graphics. Explosions, damage, sounds etc = all excellent. Haven't worked out how to get down lower and in amongst it yet - always seeing it from relatively high camera angles.
Also d/loaded the Rome: Total War demo this morning and am most impressed with its graphics. Set everything on best quality and encountered one or two CTDs until I switched off a/aliasing and reduced screen to 1024x768 (9800Pro, 2800x AMD, 1gb 400DDR, Audigy2, XPHOme). It seems to have stabilized now. Much better graphics than Medieval version and can swoop down to ground levels to study the hand to hand combat. Nice long grass swaying in the breeze. moving water in rivers etc. etc.
Horses still seem to have very long necks (thought that in the Time Commanders programme - odd thing to notice, I suppose), but tonight I hope to really get to grips with the demo and have some rather surreal fun.
Thanks again for al the excellent suggestions. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

For serious gamers, here is my list.

Panzer Campaign Series by HPS Simulations. Really just slicked up board games. Very nice system, turn based, Lots of units to play with and stunning maps. If you are an old boardgamer, you will like these.

Combat Mission series-The graphics are starting to get dated but that does not negate the fact that this is the best tactical squad and tank game around. When you shoot at a tank, every factor is weighed, down to armor thickness, location, and angle of shot. Still the best out there. Lots of very nice high resolutions mods out there to spruce up the basics.

Gary Grigsby is a master. Check out his "Uncommon Valor" (Matrix Games), a great carrier war game that takes place in the South Pacific. If you are really a grognard then you have to get his new "War in the Pacific". Warning, this is not for the faint of heart. You control every gosh dang ship and plane that fought in the Pacific. Down to PTs and barges. This is the first computer monster and may not be for all. These are both turn based. Great for play by email.

C&C generals is great fun. Launching scuds at infantry and nuking tanks. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Rise Of Nations is really good.

Out of the last 2 months, Ground Control 2 is quite good. There is no resource management tho.

BudVar - I gotta agree with you there, mate. Battlezone, or even better Battlezone 2 are amazing games. I didnt realise there was still an online community playing these games nowadays. I played Battlezone 2 again a couple of months ago and was still impressed with the graphics for how old it is. I'm sure BZ 1 looks very dated now tho, hehe. Still its the gameplay which made those games so good.
Its such a shame they didnt sell many copies. Gamers must have been wary of the concept as it was pretty original at the time. I would love to have seen a BZ3.

Wait a month to get ROME:Total War. It's the ultimate RTS-turn based hybrid game.

My favorite RTS and turn based games are:

2. Combat mission Afrika Korps
3. Sub command-nuclear sub simulation (soon to be replaced by Dangerous waters)

Medieval:Total War is great. Lots of carnage and cavalry charges. Good fun.

Just got the Rome:TW demo. Not crazy about it so far, but I can tell you that if the demo is anything to judge by, the game will take one helluva machine to run. 10,000 troops all going at it with with the camera view panning around... better have a Doom3 machine setup if you don't want a slideshow.

Hi guys!

My favourite RTS games:

Microsoft Age of Empires II, The Age of Kings
Microsoft Rise of Nations with Thrones & Patriots expansion
CDV Blitzkrieg
CDV Cossacks European Wars WITH The Art of War expansion
CDV American Conquest

While all the above are great, my general preference is for the CDV products. Cossacks II Napoleonic Wars is due for release here in Australia very soon and I can't wait to get my hands on it. The original Cossacks European Wars was a potentially very good game that had some issues, but became a truly great game (IMHO) with patches and the Art of War expansion.

Blitzkrieg is a well balanced blend of good graphics and engaging gameplay with a manageable learning gradient and it's WW2, which I like a lot. Codename Panzers, also to be released here shortly, promises to be good also. Time will tell!

Best regards,
panther3485

For WWII games, Close Combat if you can find them. I have played "A Bridge Too Far", Russian Front" and "Battle of The Bulge" and all are pretty good. The one thing I like most is realistic ranges and line of sight.

If you want what is possibly the best rts of all time and for some reason you haven't gotten to it yet, pick up Starcraft and its expansion, Brood War. They can be had in the same box for $15.- US. Well written campaigns tell the Starcraft story and 3 totally different races make for some good multi-player games. Comes with a large assortment of maps and more are available on-line.
