I can see my skin but everyone else sees default. Whats the problem? Is skin download turned off on server?

Depends on what server you play on http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Yes, some hosts have chosen to have skin download OFF in order to reduce lag...

I have to say one of the things I miss from the original IL-2 was seeing all thse custom skins in the DF servers.

Arcadish, I know, but sometimes when you are back from a day at work you just feel like blasting away at coloured little planes wandering in front of your sights...

Yes Goatkisser, if skin download is disabled you are the only one who can see the skin you have chosen, everybody else sees the default one.

It saves bandwidth = less lag.

In other words it's normal.

yup - it's a shame skin d/l is off... But then it freezes gameplay http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif online (unless all the skins are in your cache already)...

Imagine 1 host and 10 players joining.
Each player sends it's skin (512x512 is 263222 bytes and 1024x1024 is even a whopping 1049654 bytes without overhead). So now the Host is receiving 10 x 1MByte - that's 10MByte to download for the host... but then the Host has to send the skins to the players.... thats another 10 MByte worst case for EACH player that joined.

So grand total for 10 players joining a game with skin d/l on is 10MByte download and 100MByte upload for the Host worst-case...

Even on a fast connection - the game will become a slideshow - remember while all this is going on the Host also has to send the normal game-play data to the players, and receive their updates...

Plus, even if skin d/l is on, if others don't have that particular skin in their collection, it takes a while for it to load up on others computers for all to see.

As I understand it Customskins cause lag and stutters, especially the bigger ones. They must be sent to each player and if every new player has custom skins then the server and each comp must process the skins= lag and stutters.....PLZ PLZ correct me and say Im wrong. I want my own skins U see, but not If the server is "Hell-lagging". http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/icon_twisted.gif

Well if you just plain want them - make sure to take the small skin format (512x512 256 colour BMP). Thats a quarter of the size of a big skin...
