I've been trying to find the answers to these quetions on the forums but failed (if they are there don't blame me there probably called something stupid http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif )

1. How much of the earths oceans will be moddeled
will it be just the Atlantic and european waters ot will we be able to go anywhere on the planet.

2. theretical situation: in the dynamic campagne lets say i was hunting cargo ships in a shipping lane when suddenly i was dogged by squadrens of asw planes forcing me to submerge and escape, ruingin my chance of hitting any convoys. Could I through various information souces trak down the carrier that was lauching the planes nad with (alot of) luck sink it and the planes then escape and return to the shipping lane, now unhindered by anymore planes.

3. Will the ocean topogrify be realisticly moddled, like the right depths, undersea moutains and cliffs, fault lines and continental shelves. It would be cool to follow a ship you suck for half an hour as it slowly drifts to the ocean floor.

1. Probably just where U-Boats operated, so the North Sea, North & South Atlantic, the Med, the Eastern Coast of the USA + the Carribean

2. Dunno, the most dangerous ASW planes where sea planes and such that flew from airbases on land etc. more DC's on bombers than string and canvas carrier aircraft and they wouldn't be too much of a threat really, eventually they'd run outta fuel and iron bombs and head home
would be cool tho http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

3. Probably, with the level of detail going into this game, skipping over something like rocks on the bottom would just not fit http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif it'll make diving near the bottom dangerous, there might be a feakin huge spire of rock in the way!
and it would be good to hear the ship cruch into the sea floor http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Here is what is known(probably) so far:

1. As Kapitan_Nereus said. No OFFICIAL announcements. No word on the Pacific yet, or other Oceans or Seas.

2. They HAVE modelled A/C on the Carriers.(step 1) Whether or not they actually use them is the question I have been asking/demanding.(step 2) Otherwise they should just paint 'Sink Me' on the side since they're useless.

3. Unknown also. It has been suggested. Also the ships we sink should be there too. And rocks. Don't forget Atlantis(just kidding)

That's it so far. More goodies here:Silent Hunter III FAQ (http://207.44.164.159/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=23215)http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v325/hauitsme/sailor.gif

@ Kapitan_Nereus

Don't forget the Indian Ocean, where some Type IX boats fought.

hello. if i can remeber correctly, in SHII i once kept the camera on a ship that was sinking. it took a long while to get to the bottom. i think one time it was taking so long to get to the bottom, i stop watching. the ocean didnt get any darker the deeper the ship sank though.
as far as exploring the world, this is going to be the first thing i do in SHIII. in SHII i tried getting through to the great lakes in the U.S.A, but i ran aground. i also did some how get my way into the pacific. the only problem was my map stop showing where i was, so i had to warp speed blindly. i kept going across the pacific and i think i bumped into the islands of hawaii (i guess) then i went on to the west coast of the U.S.A.
i also checked out the islands in the agean sea by greece, mainly santorini the island thought by some to be atlantis. i was surprised how accurate it was. it had the volcanic cone island in the center just like in real life. i think SHIIs earth scale is off a little bit, but not by much.
also i managed to save the bismarck from sinking, by attacking the battleships trying to sink her. then for some reason the bismarck just kept going north. it didnt stop until it hit ice and went aground.
so i hope a lot of the world is mapped in SHIII like it was in SHII.

lol, I did not realize that about the Bismark! Thats funny stuff. I also tried to get in the great lakes....One thing I'm really hoping for in SHIII is for ports and major cities to be modeled well. I'm looking forward to visiting Boston, New York, and Washington for some early US duck shoots. The more water the better is my recomendation......

1.The dev team said something before about the world using some satalitte system to map the place,i really cant remember but some of the figures were 4miles(detail)and 900miles by 900miles).at the time i think i took it as meaning you could sail around the world.

2.i remember sinking the ark royal in sh2,somewhere in the med.All the ways back home i was still being attacked by swordfish from the ark royal even though it had been sunk.

3.i thought about that too before, maybe they will include a very rough sketch of the ocean floor, like the very deep depression in the middle of the atlantic.

Maybe because the damaged rudder?
But why it didn't stop the engines?

I'll be very pleased to do a full world tour, but I'm concerned about fuel and provisions.
What's the outcome, if it's possible?

(Torpedowake): How large will the battleground be once the battle begins? What€s the current limitation?

(DevTeam): In dynamic campaign the entire ocean is your battleground. In single missions we'll use mission area of up to 900 x 900 km.

(Willey): Will there be historical realistic harbours and which if not all are modelled precisely after the real one?

(SH3DevTeam): Due to limited info from the period, some harbours will be not so accurately modelled. Anyway, the U-Boat bases will be as detailed as possible. That's it about harbours

(Schakal): How detailed is the sea chart? What information about the chart station can you give us?

(SH3DevTeam): The chart station will allow course plotting, measurement and AI navigator officer assisted interception course plotting. Wow, that was complex to say http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Also, regarding the sea charts: for the coastlines the most detailed vector information will be used on most areas. The game uses the latest data available ETOPO2 (4 Km sampling points) for depth information and SRTM30 for height information. Also, we are implementing the latest SRTM3 (90 meters height-map resolution) for some areas.

There is no point at all to model sea at a depth under 550 m, since our subs cannot go deeper than 350 m plus a unknown factor.

I supose these will be just vectorial info, so will be loaded when needed (let's say that the game only loads about 15 km arround our ship: just models world until horitzont).
