View Full Version : Question: Your favourite plane in Pacific theatre?

Post your favourites here. No matter if they'll be included in PF or not.

Mine is B6N5 torpedo bomber ('torpedo' run + cr@p plane on low speed=crash http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif). Second is Wildcat and third... dunno.. Val?

I must correct myself... above I type B5N6 instead of Nakajima B5N2(or B5N1) 'Kate' torpedo bomber. I guess I mistype it for Nakajima B6N2 Tenzan 'Jill' torpedo bomber, which was 'Kate''s succesor.

Mc donnel SBD Dauntless Dive bomber,
The most succesfull dive bomber of the war that was considered outdated since Pearl harbour but was never surpased in its combat record,
Its replacement SB2 Helldiver was disliked so much that it was nicknamed "Son of a B*tch 2nd class" (SB2)
'New'is not always an improvement over Old!

Gotta be the Corsair, I've always loved that airplane. Close second would have to be a Hellcat though.

Beaufighter gets first dibs on favourites, but I love the A-26 Invader just as much. If it's got twin engines and good firepower, I'm most likely interested! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'd love to fly the Cat, Seafire, and a Commonwealth Corsair too!

This is a toughie.

If you include Burma/China then the P40 is by far my number 1. (I don't have the Curtiss logo in my sig for no reason http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)

As far as the USN is concerned then it must be the F4F (and by default the FM2)

Favorite Japanese aircraft: KI61, nothing even comes close.

I honestly cannot pick any one favourite. I like so many. But I can narrow it down to perhaps the top half a dozen. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Ki-44 Shoki, A6M2/5, CAC Boomerang, F6F Hellcat, Beaufighter, Ki-61 Hein.

The favorite of mine would have to be the stubby little Wildcat. Or as I lovingly refer to it- "The Aluminum beer keg with wings." LongHorn

A very good thread indeed.

What we really need, is not so much a wide selection of planes (AEP, we have so many planes, some of which, I'm sure will never be utilised and what seems to be generic flight dynamic modelling) but a few planes, of the more well known type and more precise and individual flight modelling.

just my $0.02

Well mine will never be modeled.

I've got a thing for biplanes and floatplanes....combine them into a single plane and you have very nearly the ultimate **** plane...

CCJ: What do you define as the most important things a fighter pilot must know to be successful, relating to air combat maneuvering?

Robert S. Johnson :
It's pretty simple, really. Know the absolute limits of your plane's capabilities.
Know its strengths and weaknesses. Know the strengths and weaknesses of you enemy's fighters. Never fight the way your enemy fights best. Always fight the way you fight best. Never be predictable.

In "Fighter Aces," aviation historians Raymond Tolliver
and Trevor Constable compared Johnson's record with that of two German aces.
Werner Molders was the first ace to score 100 aerial victories and Erich Hartmann is the top scoring ace of all time with 352.

The authors noted that
Johnson "emerges impressively from this comparison." He downed 28 planes in 91 sorties, while Molders took 142 sorties to do the same, and Hartmann, 194.

Has a bad rep now cus' of FB, but the Ki-84 Hayate's my fav plane. If it didn't have the unreliable Homare engine, woulda been a bigger success. In terms of aesthetics I think it's one of the coolest, so it gets my vote.

Boomerang - seriously!!!
It would be kinda suicidal to use it in a virtual dogfight on the net, but it was a great ground attack plane. But just like the Curtiss-Wright CW-21 Demon (for our "Flying Dutchman" and others), I guess it won't be available as flyable for us... too little planes, too little paint and country options!

I'd like to go after enemy shipping at night in a P-61 Black Widow. Support the troops in a B-25H. Dive on Japanese Carriers in a Dauntless or a Helldiver fly an Avenger or Devestator. Wing with Pappy in an F4u Fly cover in WildCat go on a Turkey shoot in my HellCat. Have the War last long enough to be fitted with TigerCats and BearCats. help defend China in a P-40. Attempt high level bombing on Japanese shipping in a B-17. Join a Black cats squad and destroy the enemy with PBYs

Favorite plane in the Pacific Theater? Well for the USN/USMC it would be the Corsair. Always liked the Corsair from day one.

For everything else, the Spitfire VIII should be great fun in the Burma campaign.

But I won't be limited to just those either. P-47's and P-51's, the Dauntless, and for the Japanese the George sounds like good fun.

i like -4C becouse F4U-4C?s have four 20-mm cannons in the wing instead of six 50-caliber machine guns. They really dangerus aircrafts for booth bombers and fighters. But if i remember true, early -4B's have same weaps too.

The F4U-4B designation was originally reserved for F4U-4s intended for the british Fleet Air Arm (FAA). F4U-4C should be used for the cannon armed variant, but since the FAA never got any the F4U-4Bs the designation was finally used after WW2 for the 297 planes with 4 x M3 20 mm cannons that were produced, previuously known as F4U-4C. The F4U-4C designation sometimes still appeared but the planes were the same as the F4U-4B. Since the F4U-4B designation was used by the Navy postwar and in Korea when the cannon armed F4U-4s saw combat I prefer it.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Actually everybody talks about aerial combat. I maintain that hitting ground targets, and especially ships is more dangerous than aerial combat. - Joe Foss

P-38 is the all around fighter for all seasons. Packing Jabo juice or added ammo, it gets the job done, and I can finally land one on a carrier. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif
