is there any explanation too why american carrier based aircraft has such a crappy back view, take a look at a wildcat, hellcat or a corsair, there seems too be almost no rearview at all.Is this a construction thing because the aircraft is carrier based or plain stupidity, look at the japanese models they have full visions all around.

Check your I~16 for that too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

And while you are at it, check the rear view.

And how can I build a crank system to realy simulate operating the landing gear in the Wildcat? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

The rear view from most U.S. aircraft is pretty poor, pilots had to rely on the rear view mirrors, something that is very rarely included in a sim.

well, in this one rear-view mirrors are included....

what's all the talk about an I-16, the guy was comparing us planes to japanese, wasn't he?

luthor hinted that the i-16 has a poor rearview and a handcranked landing gear.

To rise or lower the gear in the Wildcat you would have to rotate a handcrank at right side of the cockpit. Just like in the I-16. So, in the game, you would have to press "manual gear rise" button many times to rise the gear. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
And the rearview in the wildcat will be probably same as in the I-16, or even worse.

The lack of a rear view comes along with all the stories you hear from pilots that lived through the sound of countless rounds landing on the armor behind them and flying home anyway http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif .

I think there was an account in The First Team about a F4F that landed with countless 7.7mm holes, and 20 (!) 20mm hits on it.

The view behind was poor to encourange pilots to keep the enemy in front of them.

Well, you got all that pilot armor, and it comes at a price.

Especially for the Hellcat, it had a huge metal SPINE up the back.

Now you see (or don't see) why US pilots really relied on wingmen in the Navy. It was hard to manage your own six, even with checkturns.

1944 Joint Fighter Conf contains a good discussion on these points. One of the major points discussed above was inclusion of effective armor, even in the bubble canopy types.

American doctrine emphasized teamwork (looking out for each other), which included proper use of the radio, Japanese pilots often had their radios (unrelaible) removed to save weight. Even in the F8F Bearcat with a pretty good bubble, one had to crane around prety far to see around the armor. In later F4U variants, there was enough buldge to allow a decent view rearward. The Birdcage Corsairs did have a rearview mirror in a small bulge at the forward top of the canopy.

European Air war of years ago modeled the view of twisting around in the cockpit fairly well. This is related to the forward view problem, in which moving from side to side in the cockpit helped a lot, but is not well modeled in sims.

Actually, all Corsairs had rear view mirrors. In fact, they had three! All located inside, mounted to the forward frame of the canopy, one at the top and one on each side.

quote:
A.S. How was your visibility to the rear in the I-16? For example, was the tail or the area behind it visible, did you simply have to look back, or did you have to crane your neck?

N.G. We stuck our heads out far enough to see the tail wheel. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif If you could see that, it meant that you could observe the rear hemisphere normallyâ"”you could see behind you.

Parts 1,2,3,4 here http://airforce.users.ru/lend-lease/english/articles/golodnikov/

Future flight sims may allow one to lean outside the cockpit when canopy is open, or just not there.

For P~47, need ability to unstrap from seat and run to the side of the cockpit and look out, then run to the other side, and look out there too. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/53.gif
