Do they help much? How bad is the fps hit?

Depends on the AC, for some reason the Hurri takes a much bigger bite out of your FPS than say, the P47. When I fly a bird w/ a mirror I keep the mirror on toggle, so I can use it when I need to.

Well.. when you turn your mirror on, the FPS halves. after a few secs, it is about 75% of your ussual framerate.

ANd yes, I use them. It is good for detecting those ones, sneaking up on you in FR servers http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

They're a nice touch and I certainly would've had my ground crew put some in the pit of my pony...could've used them last night to juke and jive away from a bandit before he gave me a new one! (Sigh) Alas, the P-51 doesn't come modeled with it in the game and fps drop is notice-able even on my Athlon64 3000+, 1 Gig RAM rig.
OT: It'd be nice to lean while in the cockpit...don't know if it's been discussed before or if a lean anim will help inside the game cockpit. But if someone could script a lean command (like you see in the FPS shooters nowadays), maybe I wouldn't feel like I'm wearing a rotating neck-brace while in a furball and I'm trying to peek back on my six. The rudder helps but I'd be putting my head through the canopy just get a good look...YOUKNOWWHATI'MSAYIN'?

I like 'em and use them where available. I noticed no Luftwaffe aircraft had them. Was this a regulation or an oversight? Maybe it's why they lost the war...... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

So whats the story behind that spitfire shooting another spit? Surely isn't no 109 in the mirror.

For me it's about a 5 fps hit. I use it a lot unless I'm attacking, then I turn it off.

"Dark Blue World" is the greatest WWII combat aviation Movie released in the last 20 years... It was released in limited number of theaters, worldwide. A Czech production, available in the Better DVD retail/rental outlets. Buy it, you'll like it!

Here's another clip from DBW:

In discussions on this subject 6-12 months ago, there were several pictures posted of Real Luftwaffe acft (bf109's) on which were attached mirrors, seemingly Jerry-rigged(jury-rigged) contraptions. I didn't save copies of those posts...

The mirrors are NOT modelled in the FB LW acft...I think because the mirrors were not official acft mods...

The frame rate hit is really bad if you are using S3TC texture compression.

Some hints as the the identity of the plane in the mirror animation.
1. Look at the tail section notcably the tail struts, not spitfire.
2. Look at the placement of the weapons being fired at the Spit, central and 2 wing mounted. Definately not British
3. Look at the cocklpit canopy shape, not round like Brit fighters.

Leads me to deduce it is infact a 109 of an early E type. Clip is from Dark Blue World (Czech film on B of B) and they might be using Spanish made 109's with Merlins in them. Definately not a spit as none had spinner weapons.

Discovery Wings has been repeating it's 109 documentary here for the past day under the title "International Conflict." I was surprised to learn that Guenter Rall used a small mirror in the front of his Me109 to compensate for the blind spots behind. It was apparently mounted over the instrument panel on the starboard side. Rall was number three among LW aces with 275...272 in the east, three in the west.

BTW, he also said the mirror was useless because of the vibration. "If you saw a plane in your mirror," he said, "It was time to bailout."

Winning isn't everything;
It's the only thing!

I have yet to even try the mirrors out. Considering I donā't play with externals on that may be odd. One reason is I never remember the mirrors are there. Been too long playing without them. I also never really fly in a straight line too often. Generally I ā˜Sā' curve my way to the target zone with my hat switch constantly moving as I keep an eye on the sky. I just donā't see the point in turning on something I really donā't need.

As mentioned in otehr responses, it is Not a Spit in the Rearview mirror..

It is also not a Buchon(Post-war Spanish variant of an Me109)..

It is a model of a Bf109e, and the whole "scene" is a combination of the model and computer graphics...

Here's the Model being mainpulated by the crew:

I might use mirrors if I could, but since I have a p3 700mhz... the framerate hit is way too big for mirrors to be useful.
