Hey,
Another new film for ya. My Third. the name of the Movie is 'Formation'

This one is a bit different as there is no combat invlolved!!!

The direction is a bit restrained (i.e. less visual flair and no really flashy camera moves) in this one, but i think it suits it.

The quality of the movie is MUCH improved over the last one. its a mix of avi and FRAPS 1.9 (about a 10% - 90% mix respectivly) and there are some adobe premiere enhanced scenes (contrast ratio's etc)

The Music is by John Williams (a first in a lock on movie, which is surprising) and the song is Hymn To The Fallen from the Saving Private Ryan soundtrack.

There are a few rough bits (i.e. sometimes during the transitions the images are still, nothing i can do about this its premieres fault!!) and there is one sequence that i am very unhappy with, but the rest i really like. Everything didnt turn out as well as planned but it never does...

Thanks again to tmeier (www.tmeier.org (http://www.tmeier.org)) for hosting again.

Anyway enough rambling

DOWNLOAD IT! (http://www.tmeier.org/lockon/formation_web.zip)

As Always detailed feedback/criticism is welcome. tell me what you like and what you dont like. and if you dont like it TELL ME!

Raven I liked your movie but. It looked like you were using a mouse as the planes cross the sky. I am not being critical but it looks kind of jumpy and you loose the planes a few times for a sec or two. The keyboard pan might be better because you can control the speed of the pan in the config file. UCLANUPE is tutoring me on this stuff and boy does that guy know loads about making these movies. Still a good movie!

thanks, but again like my last 2 movies that was the effect i was going for, the numpad panning always seems too mechanical for me.

i think the shot you are refering too is teh one where i pan on too quickly and look at the sun and then the planes come into view, that what i was trying to achieve

i wish i could get the mouse panning smoother, but i was doin it when FRAPS was on and its kinda hard. i realise that i could have recorded a track with a smooth mouse pan and then recorded it with FRAPS and it would have looked better but...

i'm still surprised people are kicking up a 'fuss' (and that words to be used lightly)about the mouse panning. i personally think these are great shots

i really like it in movie when the director chooses to go for a handheld shot rather then a steadicam shot, it give the shot more life and feeling.

anyway this is all my opinion, so take it or leave it

glad you enjoyed it anyway

Hey Raven! Got your newest. I was thinking of doing a formation/stunt flying movie too. Glad to see guys going for it with their own personal flare as you mentioned above. I have gotten lots of e-mails about techniques etc. from some of the guys as you see. I have made a point of stressing certain things but don't think everyone has to follow those rules http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

I got what you were doing in your shots and like the other two movies you made, these points of view are unique. That is what makes them yours. I like your daring style. Looking forward to more stuff from you. S!

Hey Raven. Ok, here's a few pointers which i would've done different, hope these tips will help you make amazing vids in the future:

The theme song is from Saving Private Ryan, if i'm not mistaken. The song is good, but i'm not quite sure if it fits with a modern jet sim like this.

And using the mouse to follow a plane on the ground taxiing makes the view look "bumpy", if you know what i mean. Try to plan your shots so you can use the keyboard instead and have one nice motion. Or, you COULD use the mouse, but place the camera close to the plane so the view looks smoother. Don't zoom in.

I also noticed that you hit "S" in some of the clips. You should cut those parts out.

Btw, what card are you using? I see you use advanced haze, but i can't see the haze? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

And for movies like these, formation flying, IMO, i feel it will look better if you use the shake effect in external views. That way it feels like someone else is filming it (i bet that was the whole point about adding this alt-J feature http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif )

I sure hope i didnt' come down too hard on you. Believe me, all the things i've mentioned here is something i've done in the past. Even in the OSC trailer http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Anyway, the movie is good Raven, keep up the good work, and i look forward to your next visions http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I liked it. As far as the jumpiness in some of the shots, I've seen that done in movies on purpose. I kinda liked that. I liked the movie and the beginning clouds part really set the mood for the movie, at least for me it did. How did you get the lens flare? I guess I don't have that in Main Actor.

the jumpiness was unintentional, it was because of premiere's transitions

the lens flare is in premiere too

i loved the cloud bits too
