Love to know what the buzz is about. There was a update today for IE6SP1 with a couple of fixes...I don't see anything else significant.

Looks like i'm screwed then. I have *never* updated my system, as when i download the updates to install, it says they are not verified my microsoft (go figure).

I just rely on my firewall.

Microsoft updates have a nasty habbit of screwing up more then they fix. Im holding off till I get some more clerification from someone other then a random forum poster. If its major, then some of the online web news would post it.

Well Mydoom virus is a ping attack virus, and is currently targeting Microsoft. I guess they are saying its so critical because its attacking them. But the MyDoom virus, like any, should be taken care of.

I just tried to updade just to see wassup. MS web site is SLOW! so I assume it is under attack by MyDoom just as was predicted 3 days ago.

MS has a bounty out for this one too!

Could you imagine how chaotic it would be if ALL home PC's were trying to get updates from Microsoft at the same time!?

My guess would be the new variation of the mydoom virus.....but i'm sure your local Virus checker will be throwing out an update within hours of a 'bug'!?

Quote from the tech site at BBC (got it downloaded onto PPC on Avantgo)..

"Attack Plan - The attack on www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) is due to start at 13.09 GMT on the 3rd Feb, and will involve all those machines infected with the B varient of the Mydoom Virus.....However, Mydoom has not infected many computers".

So it looks like this would be a non starter anyhow, but I, along with many lol, will do the obvious....update AV files http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Seems like a non-issue if you're not using Internet Explorer? I don't find much use for it.

According to M$, you don't need to have IE setup as your primary browser.Just having IE installed is enough to cause a problem with this virus.

IE is built into the operating system so even if you donā't use it, you still need to apply any critical updates that relate to it.

Even selecting another web browser in ā˜Set Program Access and Defaultsā' does not uninstall IE. It will still be installed on your computer even though another web browser is your default.

FMJ3G

Yes, you should update!

michapma

Yes, uninstalling IE is not easy, requiring many hours of reading, meditation and, depending on circumstances, child sacrifice. As could be expected, it is also impossible to use MS's auto update website to update your computer unless you are using IE as your browser. Get it? Hahahaha. But I need IE anyway to test my web designs, since 95% or so of web browser users are still silly enough to keep using IE.

If it weren't for IL-2 and FB...

Screwed?

If your are talking about MyDoom (Novarg), you are not necessary in danger even if are using IE. First of all MyDoom (A and B) are spreading through email attachments
and Kazaa peer to peer networks. If you are NOT using 'unsafe' email programs like Outlook or spreading warez with Kazaa you are doing fine. What they cause, is that they attack SCO (because of that Linux issue?)(version B also MS in Feb 3, 2004), but they also leave a back door open in the infected computer.

So what does it have to with IE? Well it uses IE to run a DLL, which in turn opens the backdoor. I have no idea if updating IE helps in that. Remember to update your antivirus software too.

Of course it is always good to have the most recent Windows updates installed.
If you want to know more what MyDoom does see for example...
