View Full Version : Command for breaking attack?

Hi guys (and possibly girls).

For a certain time, I was getting more and more angry at the stupidity of my AI mates, but these two stories just go over the top:

1. In a Stuka off-line campaign, where I am a flight commander, we have to attack an airbase. Ok, we get there, I order my fellows to "attack everything" and commence a dive. After releasing the bombs I pull out and scream loud and my engine does the same, and we both and my rear gunner pray to get out of this deadly flak before they catch us... Soon enough however I see enemy fighters approaching, so thinking it would be good to have 4 rear gunners rather than one I order my mates to join on me, and they acknowledge this. After a while I notice the lack of them and the presence of 4 MiGs on my lone tail... So I switch to externals and what do I see? The other three Stukas are stafing the enemy airfield merrily with their peashooters, as if they were some fr***ing Sturmoviks, while the holes in their wings are becoming more and more numerous...

2. In another mission with two Bf-110, I was also attacking the airfield - dropped my bombs and screamed away, only to notice that my wingman does some acrobatics in the presence of the enemy flak, and returns to the target. Needles to say, the Luftwaffe lost one plane in that mission.

While the second situation looks more realistic to me, I am somehow missing the possibility of telling the stupid AI pilots to attack once and then buzz back to formation pronto. The "rejoin" command obviously does not work.

Say that you have a bottle of schnapps on-board http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

This is indeed very frustrating.

Try the "head for home" command. Most of the time, they will head straight for home. Or, the "Next waypoint" command. I don't guarantee these to work http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.
2 For with what judgment ye judge,
ye shall be judged: and with what
measure ye mete, it shall be measured
to you again.

Agreed. We need less Artificial, and more Intelligence.

I'm not sure what "Rejoin" does. It rarely causes the AI to actually rejoin when you tell them to. In my IL-2T campaign they all drop their torpedoes if you issue the order.

Try "Cover me" or "Next Waypoint" or "Return to Base". These orders usually get a response out of the AI.

Command "Cover me" will most probably result in your fellow Stukas starting dogfight with enemy fighters! Next waypoint or Return to base should do the trick. Break, rejoin, and some other commands don't work too well.

the most annoying AI behaviour for me I already mentioned in another thread .. the way the whole squadron form a "freight train" that follows a lone enemy fighter everywhere, thru flak you name it with only the guy in the front position taking a shot

rejoin usually works for me if the AI is a fighter on ground attack or a wing about to engage sighted fighters but not necessarily if the AI is already engaged in combat .. seems like rejoin can get over-ridden by some sort of target prioritisation

The "Head for Base" or "Next Waypoint" commands work, i.e. the crazy ground-strafing Stukas stop their dirty games. I must remember though to tell them to "Change Formation" after that, otherwise they will not rejoin.

And yes, "Cover me" results in Stukas dogfighting. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif I've heard of Aichi D3 "Val" doing that, but Stukas...?
