Well well. I thought that the yo-yo was named after the toy with the up, down type manouver (no smutty innuendo thank you http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), but after getting the Shaw book (great btw) i find its named after a chinese pilot... well you learn something new everyday. Just thought i'd share.

Are you quite sure it's not named after Yo Yo the cellist? http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Apparently it's named after the Chinese fighter pilot Yo-Yo Noritake. He apparently was the first one to perform it with any sort of perfection.

But that's a Japanese name!

Actually, scratch that. I'll argue that one. I believe it is actually a Chinese name, not Japanese http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

From Shaw book page 71.

The 'fact' is being attributed to SL K.G. Holland of the RAF - who was joking. Get it Yo-yo Asian pilot...

Can no one recognize a pun anymore!?

I'll argue that one. I've been living in China for 4 years now and it's definately not a Chinese name. Japanese for sure. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

On the other hand, Yoyo is a fairly common Chinese name. This doesn't mean the pilot wasn't Japanese but the Chinese and the Japanese will change each other's names into there own language. In fact, Chinese change any name from any language into there own version.

Anyways, JFYI. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
