View Full Version : Are bomb craters possible in FB engine?

Morning gentlemen. I was just wondering if it would be possible in Forgotten Battles to model craters left from bomb explosions? From what I have seen, no explosions in FB leave ground craters. It is unfortunate, because it eliminates neat tactics, like...

Carpet bombing airfields to render them unusable! GT182 mentioned this in a previous post, and I thought it was a great idea. The thing is, is it possible? If it were, it would certainly be great if it was modeled in FB. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif S~

Bombs leave craters actually, but they fade away after some time.
I´m quite sure the game´s engine doesn´t allow "damaging craters" to be modelled. Sad.

There are no craters...just bitmaps made out to look like ones.

What you ask is something called real-time geometry modification. Only one game has gone to retail with such a feature and its somewhat memory intensive to do...and on the scale of FB just not realistic right now. I doubt even BoB will feature it...it'll be a while before you can actually, realistically, randomly, modify the terrain like that in a large simulation.

Well forget the craters, they should work on the fire. I want to see immense fire (reasonably big), fire that spreads (a little bit at least)... They should improve that "candle of fire" and make it realistic. I don't think that would be that hard to set a static plane entirely in fire. Also set a timer on the "candle of fire" after the plane crashed, so it won't burn indefinitely. If you program a timer on each fire I don't think it will hurt the FPS that much. And why not include immense fire in perfect mode only...

Sounds good Rick! And a lot easier to do than "real-time geometry modification." Be sure. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Oh and... Sig test!

There's an option on this forum preventing useless posts. The edit/delete option allows you to edit or delete your post. Using it would help you to make your sig work with only 1 post. And once it works, you can delete it. Unfortunately, to make that system useful, you have ....

#1 To know about it

#2 A certain period of time to make the changes.

I think there is a way to model the craters without changing the geometry. Basically you have to create the crater as an object (just like it was a tank or a truck), and have the program place one where each bomb hits. The game engine recognizes that when a plane touches an object there is supposed to be a crash, so that would work well for rendering airfields unusable. A plane trying to take off would touch this "crater object" and crash or explode.

Thats a good work around Gato maybe if we keep buging them about it they might addit . But I doubt we get real creaters till BOB if then. It would give bombers more vaule in dogfight games. You could push the enemy to less valuable airports (low alt and distant)
good hunting
