i've been playing with the quick mission build and would like to know if you can get a mission to start from a takeoff instead of in the air?....thanks...

I'm afraid you'll have to use the FMB for that. It is a bit tricky to get the hang of, but there's a very nice "for idiots" guide to it found on the Mission builders forum, and some very nice and helpful folks as well.

Can't be done in QMB.

You need to use FMB.
This might help you :

fmb is simply trash, so wait for uberdemon version for AEP, through it you will be able to set any map, any plain, and takeoff if you like. The QMB should have all that options, but he stayed the same from original il2. There are far more things to do with your life than to waist your time with fmb.

An in-between solution is to use Uberdemons' excellent UQMG:

http://www.uberdemon.com

It's just the best. Both as a QMB replacement and as a good way to learn the FMB - anything you make in UQMG can be loaded into the FMB so you can see how the mission files work and get the hang of it that way.

There's a ton of new features coming in the next update for UQMG including adding all of the AEP planes to the selection, but in the meantime, you can just edit them into the missions yourself. Use Notepad, find the mission you want to play [which will be in say, C:\Program Files\FB\Missions\Single\NN\( Play UberQuick Mission )\20040417084913m10_04.mis], edit the .mis file in Notepad and change the names of the aircraft.

Say if you set yourself to be the flight leader of squad 1,

[usa0100]
Planes 4
Skill 3
Class air.P_51D5NT
Fuel 50
weapons default

Just change that part to say

[usa0100]
Planes 4
Skill 3
Class air.P-51B-NA
Fuel 50
weapons default

To make yourself fly the P-51B instead. Save it and off you go. To change the plane your particular flight is going to fly, you want to edit the flight name that appears after " player" at the top of the mission file, eg, player usa0100.

All the plane names AEP uses can be found under your "Paintschemes\Skins" folder in your AEP directory.

[edit - erm, you also need to change "-" to "_" in the .mis file for plane names from paintschemes. or you could just load it in the FMB and do it manually for each flight]

Hmm. Now I look at what they really look like it seems the bloody buggery new P-51s break the naming scheme entirely. Hooray.

Class air.P_38J

Class air.P_38L

Class air.P_47D10

Class air.P_47D27

Class air.P_51B

Class air.P_51C

Class air.P_51D5NT

Class air.P_51D20NA

Wow....thats pretty strong...simply trash..... you must be either too impatient or too stiupid to use the FMB. Actually it is a great piece of software and if you take the time to learn the basics, you can ask someone to assist.. I learned the basics over Ventrillo with the XO of our squad..and have since showed 3 other people the basics the same way... in about 20 minutes. To the original poster..... The links supplied by Labbit and Clint the links to Eatern Skies & UberDemon's software listed above are both excellent. In many ways the UQMG is superior to the FMB but the FMB is nothing to sleep on. It is a powerfull tool that gives you the ultimate in programming your own missions.. total control.... Try not to be intimidated by it.. it isnt as hard as it seems.

If you just want to learn to take off, you could let the AI land and then take off or if you want more single missions, there are plenty over at netwings.

FMB is a breeze for me to use as it comes out of the box. It is not fair to discourage someone from using it that is new to the sim.

Just put the cursor on "file", load map, then the map of your choice, click it and it loads. Then click the cursor on "View", then object, in the top dropdown you will find aircraft, once this is set to aircraft select what you want to fly in the second dropdown. Hold ctrl key while you click the cursor on the map where you want to fly and it will place the plane of your choice there. Whithout releasing control put the mouse cursor where you want to fly to and click it again, you will see it will set your plane again at a later time and a line will connect the two. YOu will see the "plane 1" tab on the object window, go in here and check the box marked "player", then go into the properties and waypoints tabs and set them to your liking. Left click on the map and hit unselect in the options that come up. Then hit "file", "save as", type in a name for your new mission, hit "save". THen hit file again and "play". it will load and you can hit fly and you are in the air! Congrats, your first FMB.

IN the same way you set your plane you can scroll through objects and set your red and blue bases, aaa, and anything else you can think of. YOu will notice that when you set something it flashes white until you deselect it , this means it is active and ready to be worked on or modified. on the left of the map is a slider that will let you zoom in or out . when you zoom in close you will notice it goes 3d on you. Set some objects and hit "enter", you will zoom down to the object and be able to manipulate it with the mouse and mouse buttons, experiment and you will learn. If you want to do a mission where you take off-you will have to set a base and place your plane on it with the way point set to "take-off", simple.

Set a red and blue base, Put planes on them taking off, set waypoints for the planes, ships, tanks, etc and have fun!
