Nice Ivan.... very nice indeed.. i just got in from work and this is a real treat. It is so frickin cool to see this thing I enjoy so much (simming) taking on such gartgantuan proportions... I mean.... these guys had to pay thier own way to China right? It says a lot about their dedication to the "sport" for lack of a cooler term... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

So were the pilots using their own equipment? What about TIR and pedals.... anybody have them? It is so good to see some of these guys who I have heard about in the flesh..... I also think that it is interesting that the 1st & 2nd place winners were Russians and Germans.... it seems kind of fitting for this one.... considering the sim. Is this the first ICAS competition? Will it be an annual thing? Id love to see this thing go ka-boom...!! Thanks Ivan... I cant speak for anyone else but I enjoyed the read......... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

what id like to know is why not more of them are at HL or UBI

they must have their own gaming portal in China that they use ?

i remember fighting CHN_Hotwind in FB v 1.0 , he was pretty good at UBI

ive seen others but very rarely & not in ages & ages

just look at the CHN FB Movies they have released ...... they are using awesome rigs to make such quality flicks ........

Thanks for the piccies Ivan.

What a fantastic time !

Treated like royalty from day one and the flying was the scariest thing ever. I finished every match shaking like a leaf (and smoking ten cigarettes simultaneously)

China (as little as we saw) is an incredibly friendly place. People on the tube train were asking us who we were, we were signing autographs, giving interviews for television etc etc. Andy Warhol was right it seems.

Jimmy and myself will collect our experiences into some semblance of a report and post it along with some pics you won't see in any official reports. Soon.

I hope this event takes off - pun intended - as meeting someone in Hyperlobby is one thing, travelling halfway around the world and getting blind drunk with them is something else entirely.

This event was so cool. Here at home, people look a bit strange if I tell them about my hobby and sometimes a even feel a bit ashamed to tell them about. At china I felt like a popstar http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

ICAS: Report of the Chinese FB Tournament

James ‚ėJimmyGiro‚' McComb

Travel and Accommodation

China is a very long way. It‚'s even longer when you start your journey at 3am with a 9 mile hike to the ferry, which leads to the 3 hour coach that takes you to Heathrow and a 737 shuttle to Amsterdam. At 4:50pm we‚'re speeding down the Schipol Amsterdam international runway on a 747 heading 7 time zones east.

On the communal monitors strategically placed down the isles, images of Jack Nicholson and Dian Keating, mingle with a hundred interrupted catnaps, as fellow sardines try valiantly to stagger their trip to four cubicles catering for 2 hundred over-watered travellers. Many nationalities sharing ‚"excuse me‚"Ě and ‚"so sorry‚"Ě, with ‚"thank you‚"Ě and ‚"schee schee‚"Ě.

In 23 hours the smell of spring flowers resting in the cold night time air of the Isle of Wight, has been replaced by the Jet fuel and diesel fumes of Beijing‚'s busy international airport. Off we march to arrivals clutching passport and ‚ėhealth declaration‚': I swear I have no symptoms of the following diseases‚... cross my heart and hope to die.

Through the exit gates, only a hundred or so of the 1.4 billion souls stare at us; our unslept eyes scan the sea of held posters. ‚"Mr Smith‚"Ě here, ‚"Dr Jones‚"Ě there, but no ‚"ICAS‚"Ě or ‚"Lixma‚"Ě or ‚"JimmyGiro‚"Ě could be seen.

We had a contingent phone number for just such a situation, but we‚'re British, so we do things the hard way; we wait. On the screen is the arrival of the plane from Moscow, we correctly deduce that Oleg would arrive, and the welcoming committee will spot the celebrity‚...for sure.

Smiling hands are shaken, names exchanged; we trade the sounds of squeaky x-rayed luggage wheels for the honks and brake pad squeals of eager taxis; accompanied by our good hosts Xu Weiyi and friend. Off we go to the offices that hold our reserved train tickets for the 12 hour ride from Beijing to Wuhan, situated on the grand Yangtze river.

With our two hosts, we are joined by the Finns: Stafroty and Tiera. They too have travelled long and far. Our train leaves in the evening, so we visit some sights. Time forbade us to visit all the expanse of ‚ėThe Forbidden City‚', so we made our way under the bright gaze of Chairman Mao, escorted across Tiananmen square by a mighty squadron of kites of all shapes, sizes and altitudes.

At the train we meet up with the Russian contingent again (Oleg, Gennady, Dmitry, Kuzma, Viks, Storm, Vintik and Etre), along with the Czechs (Kocour and Turbolover), Lithuanians (Naras and Brudas), Germans (miRage and Matzen) and Swiss (Mbot and Falkster). Some sleep, some drink, and some do neither; we arrive at Wuhan on the morning of the 26th of March at 7am.

The little bus unloaded the exhausted party at the 5 star ‚ėLake View Garden Hotel‚', adjacent to East lake Wuhan. To the wealthy it was luxury; to the poor it was heaven. All generously paid for by ‚ėICAS‚'. Here we stayed for two nights before the sad journey home, leaving behind a sea of smiles.

The Chinese People and Sites

Charm has many faces in China. From the tall and handsome of the North, to the lively and friendly of the South. They are as many and varied as their delicious food.

The few days we had to look briefly into the distillation of thousands of years of culture, set in the back-drop of an exploding modern economy, make this a near impossible task for a novice to do true justice in describing the bewildering assortment of people and culture. New stands beside ancient with apparent harmony.

In the centres of Beijing and Wuhan, the roads are broad, providing ample space for cars and cycles to slalom around crossing pedestrians, stewarded by strategic horns and bells. The sun shone through the city haze upon tidy well kept pavements. Young and old, rich and poor, all respecting the tidiness of their city. And many road sweepers ensure that oversights of litter are bagged promptly.

Standing guard near most road junctions are the ever watchful men and women of ‚ėThe Peoples Army‚'. Their reassuring presence makes life difficult for those who would have bad intentions. In their smart green uniforms they stand rigid and erect, only the eyes and head scan the scene. Armed according to purpose, some with sticks, some with pistol and some with ‚ėelectric‚' batons, complete with the choice from the green or red buttons. Though it‚'s just as shocking (in an altogether healthier way) to see their stern faces break into a pleasant smile and an accompanying ‚"hello‚"Ě.

These happy images will not fade easily.

The Tournament

Later after breakfast on the 26th, we travel to the building that will house the competition. Over the weekend the ICAS centre (the NEO corporation‚'s central offices in Wuhan) is bedecked with national flags of the participating countries.

The first meeting proper is to sort out that all understand the rules of combat, then we proceed to draw lots for the match groups. All the time cameras flash as every action is recorded for posterity, and of course this is the first of hopefully many such gatherings, hence it is important to learn most from this occasion.

We are lead to the room of about 16 computers all expertly connected to servers in the building. Each combatant is allowed to set-up ‚ėtheir‚' computer according to their personal settings, many bring their own joy sticks, but there are also many Saitek sticks available for those who travelled light.

The referees watch in turn each candidate set-up to ensure no trickery. The game settings are full real except for icons and speed bar. Cleverly they allow external views for the purpose of secondary viewing by the media and audience situated in the ‚ėlecture hall‚' (complete with big screen projection and live commentary). The candidates are denied external viewing however by simply having all external views ‚ėun-mapped‚' from their control set-up. Simple and effective.

The referees and technicians were models of efficiency. Under the constant badgering requests from us ‚ėforeign devils‚', they showed exemplary skill and dexterity, both mechanical and social. Indeed it is easy to overlook the importance of their contribution, because they made everything work so well that they didn‚'t bring undue attention to themselves.

After lunch we entered the lecture hall in procession; each team behind their national flags. The hall contains the media, both national TV and many news papers. Here the teams are announced to the many cameras and microphones, before candidates are lead to their seats positioned in front of the many students from local universities invited in as audience.

There are many strong and positive speeches from the directors of all the contributing bodies of the tournament, as well as sponsors. Included with the speaking dignitaries was an actual fighter ace from the Korean conflict (Lieutenant General Han Decai), and the Secretary General of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, Max Bishop.

There was an army of interpreters to ensure that nation spoke unto nation. Especial mention is for Mbot, the Swiss candidate, who as the youngest member of the competitors, was selected to read out the declaration of fair play on behalf of all. And he did so with confidence and aplomb considering English was a second language to him.

After this long day we retired back to the Hotel at about 9pm. Earlier we had played the opening matches of our respective groups. Some knew they were in the final rounds and some not. Each retired according to there frame of mind.

The second day, Saturday the 27th, was equally full, though mainly of game play. I shall not make comment of the games, as all contests were ‚ėtracked‚', therefore they should be available for viewing by all from the ICAS site: http://icas.dof.cn/php/index.php

That night we had an impromptu party at the hotel, a last chance to get autographs and emails in a final drunken get-together; indeed Kocour and Teira were almost unseparable. Especial mention of Gennady Grutsya, in Moscow he is available for rent (very good rate) as the life and soul of a party.

On the final day in Wuhan we had various tours to view of this fascinating city; included was a tour of a machine laser cutting factory. Then we travelled around the East lake on our way to the museum. This had the remains of many fine brass exhibits from local tombs, which included the worlds heaviest instrument, a complete range of brass bells. We were subsequently treated to a performance on an exact replica of this mighty instrument.

From the museum we were taken to a very popular restaurant, all the while given a police escort for our clear and safe passage (we felt like VIP‚'s). The restaurant was the last stop for us British and Swiss as we had to fly back to Beijing for an early return flight to Europe the next morning.

We bade our farewells, addressing @6 who was there representing all the gallant Chinese flyers. I should add that their final position in the tournament does not reflect on their skill as flyers, but more the difference of flying style adopted by the majority of the western teams. The Chinese approached directly for an honest fight, but their opponents flew BnZ tactics. That was the crucial difference.

Conclusions

For now though, I would say that 'Forgotten Battles' is more than just the best flight sim, it has also become a vehicle to meet some of the nicest people on Earth; it is truly a 'world game'.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

chn06, great job on the event! A couple questions though:

1) Did anyone use TrackIR and was it allowed?

2) It doesn't seem there were any qualifier matches to determine who would show up for each country. Did you just choose whoever signed up from their application or were there simply not enough sign-ups?

I along with a squad member A-Cat_FlyFish were toying with the idea of signing up a month or so ago as a combined Canada/US team but weren't sure how well organized it would be even if we could get the time away but obviously, you all did a spectacular job!

Spare a thought for ipoh's task. Below is a section from the report, translated English to Chinese, then back again, using AltaVista's Babel fish:

The Chinese People and Sites

Charm has many faces in China. From the tall and handsome of the North, to the lively and friendly of the South. They are as many and varied as their delicious food.

The few days we had to look briefly into the distillation of thousands of years of culture, set in the back-drop of an exploding modern economy, make this a near impossible task for a novice to do true justice in describing the bewildering assortment of people and culture. New stands beside ancient with apparent harmony.

THEN TRANSLATED TWICE:

The Chinese people and the stand charm have many faces in China. From high and outstandingly talented north south, to lively and is friendly. They are many and the change take their delicious food. The minority day we must briefly investigate the thousands distillation several years culture, establishes in the detonation modern economy background, makes this near not impossible duty open the real justice for novice Shanghai to describe the classification which the person and the culture confuses. Side the new standpoint in is ancient by the obvious harmony.
