Aside from air superiority problems that all bombers suffer under...I think the Ju-88 was effective right throughout the war. Someone do correct me if I'm wrong...but this was the prevaling type of German bomber.

Cool but how did if fair against heavy hitters like the La7 or the P-51,was the JU88 a High alt bomber or low to medium?

JU88 was a medium type bomber. It could do level bombing, and it could also dive bomb as it had dive brakes. Also served as a night fighter. So it was a multi-role aircraft which imo isn't too shabby. I think given the right circumstances it was probably very effective. However going up against greater odds puts any aircraft at a disadvantage, regardless of the planes quality.

Ju-88 was a great aircraft. Some have called it the most versatile plane of WWII, and I would have to agree. Heavy fighter, night fighter, torpedo, level bomber, dive bomber, test platform, close support, etc. The Ju-88 did it all and while it may not have been exceptional at any, it was good at most. The Ju-88 was said to take extraordinary punishment as well.

As far as the Ju-88's were concerned, some of the later versions did have improved defensive armament in the form of either the 7.92mm twin MG 81 or the single 13mm MG 131. While the latter improved Ju-188 had a combination of 7.92mm, 13mm, and 20mm defensive armament.

I'm sure on a nice dark gloomy night, the canons on those Ju88 nightfighters would show those La7's and Mustangs, a thing or two about heavy hitting.

High altitude versions (and later developments
like the 388) were produced. I don't know what
sort of numbers they were used in, though. There
were high altitude recon versions too.

Those weren't Ju88s in the movie "Patton". They were He-111s.

The Ju88 started as a bomber with divebreaks included, so it could do level and dive bombing. later versions also include recon, wheather recon, ... and of course the C and G versions: destroyer and nightfighter. btw the Ju88 was quite fast for a bomber. It's engine used for the long nosed FW190s.

take a look here:
http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/types/germany/junkers/ju_88/Ju_88_nf.htm

one with torps here:
http://www.warbirdpictures.com/LCBW/JU88-107.jpg

here a nightfighter:
http://www.warbirdpictures.com/LCBW/Ju88k3.jpg

btw the armament of the destroyers is quite impressive.

Ju 88C-6a Day-Zerst├┬Ârer version. Modified C-4 with two Jumo 211J-1 or J-2 engines, increased armour plating, fixed armament of three 7.9 mm MG 17s and one 20 mm MG FF cannon in the nose plus two MG FF in re-introduced ventral gondola plus one defensive MG 15 or MG 131. Various armament modifications and sometimes a WB-81 under each wing. WB-81 is a gunpod containing 6 MG81. So all in all you would have quite some MG firing to the front for strafing groundtargets. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

The S-models from 1943 onwards were fitted either with BMW 801 or Jumo 213 engines (+2100hp with GM-1) could reach speeds in the class of 610-620km/h at around 8000m.

T-series recon planes were somewhat faster as they were lighter.

Up to 6 WB-81 pods could be carried simultaneously, so all together 36 barrels in WB pods was possible.

There were also WB-151 pods with MG-151 20mm weapons, but I'm not quite sure how widely they were used.

Well, Germans called them watering cans. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In game the effect is of course bit strange as there is no infantry. WB was intended to be used on infantry masses on the east front. I'm sure couple of Ju 88's with WB's could quickly cause casualties and demoralize and stem a infantry mass assault.

In game causing effect is of course quite a bit harder, but I would expect WB's to be pretty could weapons against targets like railway yards and truck colums.

Yep, in effect. 6 WB 81 pods, each with 6 MG 81s... 36 in total, each firing 1600 rounds/minute, that`s 960!!!!!!!!! rounds towards the ground PER SECOND. I would guess trucks, light vehicles, men, horses that were caught within this were literally shredded to pieces... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif but it was vs. ground only, the barrels were directed towards the ground in an angle. Imagine the Ju-88 flying above an enemy coloumn, and just hosing it all over while flying level (i guess the pilot could observe through the nose glass). It was also used on Stukas.

I hope Jippo will give us those WB 81 pods, will be tremendous fun to try out, even the mere visualisation!

WOW Jippo!!! looks great. So the next thing we need is infantry http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I didn't know they could carry 6 of those pods. I once saw a pic of a JU88 carrying 2 of them but 6 is insane. Just imagine you have 4 JU88 attacking with WB each. 144 MGs firing!!! that's insane.
