Welp, I upped on ubi.com last night for the first time. It was as I suspected: I need a better graphics card. Actually, I need to a new machine, but Id settle for a new card. Got my eye on a couple of budget cards: a GeForce FX5600 Ultra and the Radeon 9700 Pro, both around $200 or less. What's the current wisdom in this community concerning these 2 cards? I always enjoy hearing your comments.

Helo Slimm!!

I'd go for R9700 in this case. However, if your CPU is slow, than it's a waste of money. GWhat have you got? CPU, mem and so on?

My system: PIII 866 MHz, 512 megs RAM, NVidia TNT2 32mb agp card, Windows XP, SoundBlaster Live. Not blazing, but whattaya think? Would it still be a waste of money to get the 9700 PRO?

Well, I wouldn't call it a waste of money, but you should primarily upgrade your CPU and memory. Furthermore, it's not sure your new video card would be compatible with your current motherboard.

As Rajvosa said, not a complete waste of money but the increase will leave you wanting more.

Your current rig would become somewhat of a bottleneck for the 9700, which IMHO is the better of those 2.

Look to a new processor and mobo along with a new vid card if you want to enjoy this sim nearer its true potential.

Hmm, I think you should build a new system w/ a 9700 pro, or get a R 9500 with your current one

He's right. This game has got to be one of the most resource hungry games available. Your new card will whet your appetite for more power so that you can run it on maximum settings.

To do this you'll need a new processor, a P4 or Athlon which will also mean a new motherboard.

But if you were to change one component, a decent graphics card is going to make the most difference.

Hmmm...a lot to think about. ......actually, not much to think about because I'm not ready to upgrade entire system. Looks like any new graphics card, say teh R9500 or equivalent, would be better than what I have, and more cost-effective. Thanks, that's the kind of input I was looking for. When I am allowed to get a new system (I admit it: I'm hen-pecked and *****-whipped) I'll certainly keep all this info in mind. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Like everyone has said - there's really no point in getting the Radeon 9700 Pro. Your current system, with the exception of the video card, should be enough to run FB. The card, however, is too old to run most modern games at all, never mind at a decent frame rate.
However, getting such a top-of-the-line video card will undoubtedly turn your processor into the bottleneck, which would be a shame. I think with your current setup, a Radeon 9600 (I doubt you'll be able to find a 9500 in this day and age, plus the 9600 is probably cheaper) is the maximum you should be looking at.

Yeah, ya know I saw a R9600SE at CompUSA for $129 but I passed on it cause it had only 64meg bandwidth and I was afraid that would be a bottleneck. But that may not be an issue with my system.

BTW, even with my crappy card I get about 8-12 fps with settings of disply 800 x 600, 16 bit color and directX 9.1 vid mode (as opposed to openGL). But that's just enough to get me shot down b4 I can see who's around me, lol.

A CPU upgrade is the way to go.

Your graphics card is old though and perhaps you should consider buying a geforce 3 or geforce 4/radeon 8500/9600 second hand.

If you go with a 9600 stay away from th SE. get a 9600 pro or better... try here http://www.pricewatch.com/ for a CPU MOBO combo upgrade..... even to a 1.8-2.2 GHZ something or other you would be better off. You will need a new video card regardless.

Here's a high quality Radeon 9800 Pro for a whopping 229 bucks. Such a deal.. ordered it today. You should spend the extra 30 bucks and grab this.

edit: Whoa! I didn't read the whole thread and saw your low CPU.. I think it may be time to upgrade to a new computer my friend. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
