View Full Version : Black smoke when throttle applied

Between 0430 and 0500hrs on the morning of the 11th the first of a total of 55 SM79`s took off from various airfields in Sicily, their targets being Hal Far, Valetta and Kalafrana seaplane base. Escort was provided by 18 MC200`s. As the raiding forces approached Malta they were detected by the one and only radar site, which alerted the Hal Far Fighter Flight. Three Sea Gladiators, which were at readiness, were ordered to scramble.

Flt Lt George Burges, N5531, led Fly Offs 'Timber' Woods and John Waters up to intercept. The first to make contact was Burges, who came across a formation of nine SM79s heading for home, after they had dropped their bombs. He opened fire from long range and continued until he was forced to break off to avoid a collision. Although he had fired off most of his ammo he could only claim for a damaged bomber. One of the Gladiators, possibly that flown by Woods, was attacked by one of the Macchi`s, piloted by Ten Giuseppe Pescola from 79 Squadriglia. Woods had been attacking the bombers and had damaged two of them before being attacked by the Macchi. He went into a tight left-hand turn and for several minutes the two aircraft turned circles as each pilot tried to gain the upper hand. Eventually Woods managed to get off a few bursts and the Macchi was last seen diving away trailing black smoke. This was credited as a probable. No damaged was inflicted on the Gladiator. The Macchi was only damaged; the black smoke was from the exhaust as the Italian pilot applied full power to evade his attacker.

This was a common mistake to make by pilots from all nations during combat. This was particularly common during the latter stages of the war over Germany when the Luftwaffe used synthetic fuels. As the pilot applied power the engine would emit thick black exhaust smoke. This would make his attacker believe he had inflicted mortal damage to the enemy's engine when in fact very little damage had been caused.

It certainly would, but there are too much things, which could add the realism. Maybe community should create large wishlist of such things and send it to Maddox?

I agree with prof wizard, I seem to remember reading in someones autobiography (Jonny Johnson?) that german engines were very smoky in late war due to dodgy fuel, and this was useful in combat, eg chopping throttle to force overshoot could easily be spotted.

it sure would be nice.. since we already have the yaks that produce smoke when their mixture is too rich, I guess it would be feasible to add smoke (maybe a bit thicker) for german planes adding boost (and maybe others)

however, the question is: hom much hours of work would it tyake from developing other, maybe more important, stuff

I think this was brought up as far back as IL2, at the time I believe Oleg said it ate up to many fps. Maybe that will change with time...
