If any of you recall, the Tempest was planed
for the Ace expansion. If you look back
through the archive of development images you
will find a totally complete model of the
aircraft. So Whatever happened to the Tempest?

Wasn't actually totally complete...believe it or not, but the last update was unbelievable.

Its still being finished. The modeler reported on here a few weeks ago now that all levels of detail (there are 5 or 6) were done except for the shadow ones (which wouldn't take very long - may even be done now). The cockpit I believe was very similar. Just adding the final textures I think they said.

When its done, it will be one of the best looking models in the game I think. A supreme effort...worth the time spent developing it...provided it makes the final cut I imagine http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I'm also hoping that the cockpit, once finished, can then be quickly modified so that we'll have a flyable Typhoon too!!!

While the Tempest & Typhie would be great, I'd be just as pleased to see the Whirlwhind. I have an irrational affection for that beast since childhood, despite knowing very little detail about it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Was not the Tempest and the Typhoon both ground attack fighters not really well suited for air combat but rather fighter/bombers with emphasis more on bomber than fighter?

If im remembering it right
I think the Typhoon was meant to be a iterseptor from the beginning
but its engine were not suited for high alt so
it took the part as a fast groundpounder instead.one of the finest.
The Tempest were also a good groundpounder, but was
infact most used as an "airsuperiority" fighter.

Not exactly true. A generalization that has alot of people thinking these are poor fighters.

The Typhoon was designed as a heavy fighter from the start. Large wing, proposed armament was initially 12x .303 and then changed to 4x20mm, and robust construction. It also featured one of the most powerful engines of its day. Caused alot of problems (fires, etc.) but when the Typhoon was running along it was hard to beat. The Typhoon ended up being used as a ground pounder because the planes design didn't lend to high altitude combat. It was easy prey up there with the 109 which was quite adept at higher alts. Against the FW190 it was a little better...although its roll rate is probably less than half that of the FW190's, it was faster at very low altitudes and it had a slightly better turn rate. So the Typhoon isn't going to be a fighter of choice for most people but in a high speed chase in the 1943 range of aircraft...you want to be in a Typhoon. If you want to dogfight then the Spitfire is where its at.

They also adapted the Typhoon for ground attack. It did this quite well because of the robust construction, heavy firepower, and its high speed. Good for avoiding flak.

The Tempest is another matter entirely. Designed to cure the Typhoon's problems...its engine was slightly more reliable, its roll rate was similar to the P-47's (maxes out at about 80 dps at 350 mph - about 100 mph faster than the Jug's max roll rate), its turn rate was about the same, its firepower was greater, and it was faster at all altitudes than the Typhoon. It was generally better at low altitude although it performed better at high altitude than before.

Tempests were used mostly as tactical fighters. They were the only aircraft allowed, at the end of the war, to prowl just about wherever they wanted. Flak was a problem but less so because of its high speed (you could get out of trouble quickly). It primarly went up against fighters...generally against superior numbers (not always) but they did use it for some ground attack and strafing. Generally...in 1945 the Spitfire XIV and the Tempest V were the only planes that the RAF considered capable of fighting the Luftwaffe on even performance terms. The FW190D-9 and the Bf 109K-4 were serious problems for earlier types.

So that should give you an indication where the Tempest sits. The Typhoon was a interceptor turned fighter-bomber. The Tempest was based on a successful fighter-bomber turned interceptor and tactical fighter.

Neither will be for the sorts of people that like to go in circles all day long. FW190 and P-47 people will be most at home.

Mosquito VI is confirmed flyable and in-game (or pretty much confirmed).

Actually the Tempest was almost cancelled abd was only made as an emergency measure when it turned out that at low level the fw190's were giving the Spit V's a severe beating.

The Tempest outflew the 190 at low level and prevented them having free reign over southern england but a lot were lost from a minor flaw in the tail assembly .. it tended to come off in a high speed dive, something the 190 pilots found out and took advantage of

WOLFMondo

The tail assembly problem only affected the Typhoon and was fixed on later Typhoon versions and didn't effect the Tempest. The Tempests main weakness at first was its engine reliability but the Typhoon sort of acted as a in the field test bed for the Napier Sabres.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gifI am reading a book called Tempest Pilot by C J Sheddan and Norman Franks.Sheddan was a pilot with 486 New Zealand Squadron. He was regarded as being mad by his colleagues for volunteering for a Tempest Squadron after the reports of them being unreliable.
He suffered engine failures and saw many of his colleagues killed by the planes, for example the Typhoon was almost unditchable on water, you won't need a dinghy LOL http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
