Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

There is a pretty decent museum in Hammondsport, NY. Again, it's a bit far from Rochester...about 2 hours I think. I used to live near there. It's the Curtiss museum...Curtiss was from Hammonsport. They've also got a lot of his old motorcycles and the such. In fact...they just put a huge plane out front, and I'm not sure what it is...I'm going to take a photo then next time I'm home and post it. One of you geniuses will know.

Either way, enjoy Upstate NY! Have a good trip.

Bearcat,

I live outsdide Syracuse, NY, an appr. 1 1/2 drive from Rochester, where my wife has family. I frequently find myself in the Rochester Courts [on business, trust me!], and would be pleased to grab a brew with you while you are in town.

In Geneseo, appr. 30-40 minutes southwest of Rochester: The 1941 Historicxal Aircraft Group. A small museum but a very special one with a dedicated group of people. [Some other time, ask about how a dropped roll of film made its way back to me appr. 1 1/2 years later.]If you are here in July, the sirshow on a grass field is one of the best and most friendly shows that I have ever been to! http://www.1941hag.org/

Curtiss Museum is appr. 90 miles from Rochester. See: http://www.linkny.com/~curtiss/

In Horseheads, NY [near Elmira], an appr. 1 1/2 - 2 hour drive from Rochester is an impressive museum that had, in the past few years, shut down and reopened. They have a B-17, a Catalina, and more.

Job training implies you found employment.

Glad to hear it!

Hey Bearcat, although I live out here on the far left coast, the big K sent my wife and myself back to Rochester for 25 years of working for the company.
There are a couple of nonaircraft museums in Rochester to see (if your wife is traveling with you), but you are going to have to do a little traveling to see something with wings.
However on Court Street in the downtown area is a killer BBQ resturant called The Dinosaur Bar and Grill. Great food, great atmosphere and it is the local biker hangout on the weekend. Definately a proper place to meet and have a cold one.
Once your settled in I am the only Graf in Whittier CA, so send a co. post.
