As often as possible I pair up with a wingman, and agree with him/her who's the leader. It's nice to know that one has the leadership so you always know what both pilots will do in any situation.
I find flying in a Lufberry very deadly against fighters that turn better than ones own.
No pilot could have made an ace of himself in WWII without some help from a wingman once in a while!

I'm uncertain what you really mean?

I used to play solo until two month ago, or so. Since then I frequently write emails when my wingy and myself fly online.

However, if you're asking if we actually FLY solo, no. Seldomly did it. I usually form up on somebody or try to convince some folks that it's better to fly in groups, cover teammates during their attack or clean their six.

Same here...both. I find my tactics change subconsciously when I fly alone. I've flown with my regular wingman (=TgD= Lunix) so much that we don't do much talking when in a fight now and I get very paranoid when I'm suddenly alone.

Having a regular wingman has made this sim much more enjoyable for me and has improved my success exponentially. Typically, even a really good pilot won't last too long if he comes up against 2 or more so-so pilots.

I was on Warclouds_TOH last night and was flying blue (1st time in weeks). I found myself in the middle of four bandits (1 Brewster and 3 P-40's with me in a Zero) I avoided the inevitable for what seemed like forever and even had 2 of them smoking badly. I felt I was flying really well, but there was just nothing I could do to overcome those odds.

A good wingman is invaluable.

Right on fellas...It's been out of the question for me since I don't have a headset yet for voice comms which seems to be essential in this situation. So i'll go get me a pair this week http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Venom get a USB headset.... it will allow you to have your comms through the headset and games through the sound card. A bit more expensive but well worth it.

I agree Boltie! Since I started to fly with a wingmate (olli72) it became much more fun, and demanding too. Its embarrassing to loose a mate bcause u didnt look after him properly.
We swear more than we talk...well, olli normally swear every half word.
Often we typecommunicate with other players more than talk to eachother.
Another fun part is that we go in to more dangerous situations than before and we always watch the outcome of our escapades with great interrest.

We keep a lookout for our favorite flyers on GG and try to help them out when possible. Mostly they dont know we are there.
One of our favorites is Konijnvis. We dont know him personally but we just like his style. He seem to end up in unfavorable situations quite often. We like that and are always happy when he joins the session.( one of the decent chaps) http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

LOL...I agree ob. That's one of the things I' really appreciate about gg. There are pilots that just make it better. Either through their online persona (kon) or their eye towards preservation of themselves AND their team mates(you and Olli)

Solo or as a swarming collective.

IMO a swarming collective is much more effective than your typical 2 plane lead/wingman set, especially in DF rooms and against large numbers of human opponents in co-ops. The lead/wingman set may still be best for co-ops with a large contingent of AI but it's over-rated if you ask me.

On line, I always fly with a squaddie. That's why I'm only on line on weekends, because we're 11 time zones apart and Saturday and Sunday are the only days we can get on at the same time.

Some of us have been flying together for five or six years through three different sims. As someone else mentioned, we don't have to say much during a fight because we know each other's styles so well.

In on line coops and off line campaign missions I always call for AI assistance as soon as I'm on my way to the target. Those AI pilots can save your tail and distract AI enemy. The object is to accomplish the mission and get home alive, not to score as many individual kills as you can. It doesn't matter who gets the kills (at least to me, but I feel a realistic mission is more important than scores; the only number I track is my K/D ratio, not total kills -- but that's just my way of enjoying the sim).

With respect, BPGemini, I can't overstate how important it is to have a live wingman on voice coms when online (of course, I only fly Coops but it works in DF arenas, too, and being in a squad is vital in VOW or VEF from what I saw when I tried them). Just having that extra set of eyes is a huge advantage. (It's the old "Wingman Cheat" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Get those headphones and try flying with some squads. Many will let you on coms with them. When you find a bunch you really like, join up. Many squads are openly recruiting all the time.

I wear my headset whenever I fly, even if I have my speakers on. That mike boom is the best place I've found to stick my TIR reflectors http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

You can't convince me that a 2-man lead/wingman combination is more effective than a swarming collective in a DF room or all human co-op.

I guarantee that the 3-5 (let's say 4) squaddies on Comms flying in the "swarming collective" set will totally annihilate 4 planes flying in a standard over-hyped lead/wingman set.

Trust me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

The only thing that worries me about joining a squad is that unfortunately, I can't find enough time to fly for several hours at a time http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif and only the weekends that I'm not away. Sux bad caus I want to fly 24/7:work takes overhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif...I'm just worried that if I join, I would miss a lot of squad practice, meetings, etc. Is there anyway around this http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Find a squad whose schedule and objectives suit your desire and ability to accommodate. There are some squads with actual ranks and all the pomp and circumstance of promotion and such. While others are merely a group of people who mesh and really enjoy flying together.

We have 12 guys in our squad, but only about 6 are very active...so what. When the others can join it's a veritible "ho-down". We're more loose, but we like it that way. To each his own.

Join a squad that's laid back. One that you can get on comms when you do have time to play and learn at your own pace.

I fly solo. I don't belong to a squad. Once in a while I will fly with a group, but as soon as the battle is joined, it don't matter as dicipline breaks down and everyone does whatever they want. Rarely does anyone watch my back, and then I get whacked... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

most of u have say wingman, but i rarely see 2 planes flying in formation, i guess it is another one of ur fantasys, or ur team work is just no good and bacome seperated, i am wingman of a friend, always tailhim, and i stay high over hionm while he atacks,... i make my big efort to keep eye on his six, but it bother me that when i am the leader and he is my wingman, he keeps going in his own, always lose me, and when we enter into combat he never know where i am nor he is watching my six, so it sucks, i guess i will just let it go on the wingman thing..... i am talking on real settings or almost real settings wiht labels max...

Traditional wingman tactics in several scenarios of this game are a flawed strategy.

You will find we use the "Loose Duece" and "Rope-a-dope" wingman tactics alot. But I have to agree many don't really fly proper wing tactics. But there are still plenty out there that do and very well.
