View Full Version : Oleg: Will you accept third-party ground units?

Oleg:

I had raised the idea of Machine Gun Emplacments as a ground unit in another post. One poster suggested that you had said that you might accept third-party modelled units.

Is that true? If so, what would be the polygon count
and texture size (Gibbage advised me that they'd need to know this).

Of course, if this is not true, could you please let me know?

Thanks!

A worthy request, and just what this part of the forum was designed for.

A pillbox with a heavy machinegun in it would be grand!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh! Don't scare Oleg off with fears of trying to model a Flakvierling!

I'll be happy just to get a HMG and MMG emplacement modelled for airfield defense!

What can I say? Some children never learn to play nice.

The sad part is that kind of nonsense usually gets a thread locked. They should just ban the problem poster.

it would be pretty fun to knock out mg emplacements and pillboxes in particular, but they wouldn't have much purpose - there's not much for them to shoot.

The purpose of these extras would be to improve atmosphere. Forward airfields should have bunkers for the controllers and other staff, and AAA should have prepared positions. Some kind of field fortifications would also serve to indicate entrenched infantry - giving a wider range of targets for ground attack missions.

Maybe Oleg is just busy. If he is making the patch ready, he may not have time write here.

But this is Excelent idea. Oleg and his team doesnÔ┬┤t have everything on their own.

But if somebody starts making ground units, then please donÔ┬┤t make just fortifications and tanks. You could do new types of unarmoured vehicles and horse waggons, Small boats and everything else.

Yes, I think the modelers would do them. But first they need the polygon and texture info from Oleg PLUS an indication that we would use them if they're good enough.

No one wants to put in that kind of work if it turns out that Oleg doesn't want them.

That's why I'm hoping he'll give a 'Yes' or 'No' sort of answer, just so they'll know if they should even bother doing the work.

This is a good idea. Especially useful from a ground-attacker`s point of view (variety & distinction in ground assets... keep things interesting from mission to mission).

XyZspineZyX
07-23-2003, 06:01 AM
I wouldn't mind but they would have to be included in the patch.

There is nothing more annoying than having to search the net for some obscure download on some guys web site in order to be able to play in an online game. I don't want this game to turn into Ghost Recon where a stock setup with the latest patches won't get you into 95% of the games.

RBJ, blow it out yer bunghole!

If Oleg accepts the sort of 3rd party ground units that I'm suggesting, the patch including those will be advertised that even you will have to work hard to avoid noticing them!

But they would be a great addition for us mission builder types.

I support Cossack's suggestion. There could be pill boxes, and various "hardened" bunkers with anti-tank guns etc. These could be part of the stationary armor or artillery objects library.

I'm a "mud mover" at heart and anything new that supports the ground war is appreciated.

I would certainly be grand.

As of right now, I'm reduced to placing either a K-251 or T-40 halfway into a building (with the gun/turret completely outside) to simulate machinegunners inside of buildings and ground fire.

It's okay and quite a bit of fun to set up (in order to get a nice crossfire going you have to play with lines of sight), but in the end makes it difficult. It would be awesome to set targets for ground objects as well...

Before we had front line markers, I used to simulate this by having a few ground battles with criss-crossing tracers along what I figured the lines to be. Now, of course, it's not only the ground battles, but actual lines as well!

It greatly increases the sense that there's an actual war going on below you when you see troops slugging it out in a town - and makes it immersive when you're having to be careful as to what you're shooting at, knowing there are friendlies close at hand to your targets!

It's not just pillboxes and machinegun nests I'd like to see, but bridging equipment, APU's, generators, hospital tents (or just plain tents!), and field kitchens.

Coss i can tell you what i was told in regards to the 3rd party add on i'm working on (US regimentals folder for FB).

"it's best to just put something together and send it off to Oleg as well as Matt Wagner"

So that's what i'm doing. I , like you had wanted to hear from oleg on it before i pursued countless hours of work on any prodject for FB. but chances of that are slim as Oleg is very busy. So my recomendation is just start it and send in some screen shots. As far as for ground unit models...i think they will exept them. I know that Luthier is currently worring on some pill boxes and stuff. So it's worth a shot bro.

This is probably going too far, but I'd like to see more civilian objects/ Cars, trucks / but even more than that how about Core of engineers, bulldozers, cranes, flat bed trucks, raft bridges, logging trucks, mine equipment, I know! It's stretching it pretty far, but even as static objects these could all be good targets, spatially engineers! Big Bump gun nest would be very good to have

But I'm still left in the situation of not know the polygon count and texture info that Gibbage told me the modellers will need to know before they start their work.

Without that answered, I'm dead in the water (or flying an I-16 after pulling negative G's, if you prefer).
