Am thinking of replacing my currentGforce4 ti 4600 with the newest 6800 model & at the same timeupgrade to 1GB from 768MB memory - I do have the $$$ but just wonder if the trip is necessary. Currently I have smooth game play much of the time... but unless each start from desktop is absolutely clean I have a long lasting tendancy for the game to lock up & turn computer off esp on more " complex" missions... I also have an eye on the future when the BoB game is released in 05....Suggestions anyone?

In the next month or so will probably be the best time to upgrade for IL2 and the worst time to upgrade for BoB! Reason is that a lot of harware is comming and this is the breakingpoint between the 32 bit systems and the 64 bit systems. But buying the first generation of the new hardware is never a good idea so either wait for 2:nd gen of the 64 bit or buy the last 32 bit. But dont expect to be able to run BoB on a computer you buy today.

The new FX 6800 is going to be priced above the existing 5950 series, so be prepared to shell out some serious cash (maybe even beyond the 600$ barrier). And do remember that by the time BoB comes out, it'll be just an "okay" card.

Oh, and for those who are getting ready to sacrifice their paychecks at the altar of AMD - Having a 64 bit processor accomplishes nothing if you're using it on a 32bit OS & applications. Nice marketing gimmick, though.

no. The 6800 is only $300, the ultra version is only $400.

You know, I dont quite understand this.. If they are and have been working on BoB, it's FM's and everything, how can BoB not run on today's computers? You may have to jack down some settings, but they are developing it on today's computer stuff...

If you are comfy with your current setup, wait at least ONE year, lots of stuff will get settled by then. We get new AMD 64 .09 technology at the end of the year, prices of GF 68000 drop a little, PCI-E cards will be getting ground and aslo more info (hopefully) on BoB gonna be available.Life bring good thins to those who are patience http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not how it works. Game developers typically aim for a projected point hardware will be at and make all kinds of assumtions about which technology will be in use 3 years from the start of development. Sometimes this works out well - lots of games got a big speed boost from the Intel/AMD race to and past 1Ghz CPUs. Sometimes this doesn't work and in extreme cases it can result in a title completely bombing - one of the most public examples was Jurassic Park: Trespasser which was planned to run on deferred rendering/Talisman style 3d cards which just didn't eventuate as any kind of standard.

The DX9x spec [and accessing same from GL] is actually due to be one of the last for a while - functions aren't due to change much, just how they're gotten to. Very developer friendly, lets coders roll their own rendering paths to get to card features. You might notice the poll on the front page about who owns what 3d card too. I think Oleg is trying to judge whether they support fixed function shaders or programmable shaders only from the looks of it [or one model/many renders], but it may just be determining whether to support the older cards full stop.

Oleg has previously said that they are going to make very few performance compromises with BOB due to getting pantsed on limiting what Il-2 could do when CPUs/3d cards surged ahead of them. I think even the AMDFX/P4 EE/420/6800 owners are going to be in for a very big shock when BOB finally arrives.

On the other hand, Oleg said that who is able to run FB in PERFECT mode without problem would be able to run BoB too, so IMO the BoB will be very scalable and even with technology availabe today will offer good ride.

Well I'm glad I asked...Cpu? Well I have a Slim Volcano(Superduper) Cooling fan if that helps...but I haven't got a really straight answer yet will the additional memory & new gamecard add additional smoothness & dependability to my game play ...afterall the BoB game is ( probably ) a ways off, regardles sof what UBI tells us...

How about just adding the Memory - making it 1GB will this be of any help on the larger a/c missions?

I have upgraded from 250-500-750-1 gig and the improvement from 750 to 1 gig is negligent.

I strongly sugest that you get the fastest processor your motherboard will support and one of the latest GPU:s from either Nvidea or ATI. This is offcours if your motherboard supports AGP and a processor in the 2500-3000 range.
These improvments should keep you happy untill x-mas 2005.

I think it's worth bearing in mind what "being able to run in perfect mode" means as opposed to "being able to run perfect mode well". I think the poll on the front page is basically trying to determine whether they should raise the absolute minimum to PS 1.4 [blue] rather than 1.3 [grey].

the 6800 with the latest drivers installed are great. look at it this way, you still have your old card, if you dont like the new one you can always return it or sell it to someone. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

you do realise that when you have waited till BOB comes out and you ask the question again then... should i get the latest all singing all dancing card? you will get exactly the same answer, wait till BOB 1V the sequal or what ever is on the horizon comes out as that will the geforce FX 77800 etc etc etc to run it, Its like life you can wait till your 90 to buy a ferrari but will have past the years of enjoying it, I would give it a month or so to let a couple of other brands produce it and drop the price a bit then buy it, memory helps a lot http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Well thats my opinion, I bought a FX 5900 in the sales to replace my gforce3 ti500 knowing full well there was a new one on the horizon...... regretted it? Naaaaaaaaaa have had 4 months of blindingly good fun with it in perfect mode and no doubt will have many more....................

Ps nice pic's btw http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
