Hi,

Has anyone heard of a virtual reality headset with headtracking? I think this would really make the game immersive. It could also allow for 3D, and would eliminate the need for Track IR. I really think this would be an awesome device. I wonder if it hasn't been built because it would be too expensive to market. Has anyone heard of such a device being developed?

they do have VR headsets. they ARE EXPENSIVE. the "cheap ones" are a still a lot of money. the cheap ones get you at MOST 600X800 resolution. higher n that..start paying thousands...to tens of thousands.

trackIR is a mouse emulator that uses head movements to move the mouse cursor around. look left..and the view turns left..look up, and the view looks up..etc.etc...in cockpit, rather than using mouse, hatswitch, or axis on a controller)

your next questions is....

"well thats stupid if i look left, up right, or down.. how do i see the screen? im lookin AWAY from it now.

the answer is you make SMALL head movements, and track-IR magnifies the moevement on screen. a small nod or twist of your neck/head will make large movements of point of view in game.

also, its customizable so that you can make the changes in movement larger or smaller.

hope it helps

You'd need a good set of physical controllers to combine with one of those headsets as you won't be able to see the keyboard any more!

I think what is needed is:

1. Stereo vision headset
2. head tracking
3. Data glove with hand tracking

That then allows you, in theory, to move a hand around a 3D virtual cockpit and operate switches, levers, etc. Then you don't need to see your keyboard any more. In fact with some sort of tactile feedback and two gloves you might not need a physical joystick (but the tactile feedback might be a bit tricky, and if you were flying something with a yoke that would be quite high in real life, e.g. a B17, your arms would get tired hovering in mid air!)

I had seen that vrealities website a couple of years ago. The sad part is that their product line hasn't changed much and their prices haven't come down in over 2 years. I know that the technology to manufacture these displays has definitely made strides in this time frame. So, I don't see the demand for these picking up until prices come down dramatically.

As for not being able to see the keyboard, the glove seems to be a good idea, but I think I'd still like to have a real stick with a real trigger.
