View Full Version : Close B-17 accidents?

03-22-2004, 03:00 AM
This little kid in school told me how B-17 boxes sometimes got a little 'Too Close' and ended up destroying every plane in their formation. Usually I listen to him but after watching what happens in FB it does make me wonder if this ever really did happen. He said the incident he recalled happened over the Med. somewhere... Just another random question... answer if you know anything plz

Sure if she wasn't a nazi and if she was still alive - I'd Hump Her.

That's awesome. I never knew that B-17s flying in formation ever got 'too' close and went BOOM! Thanks for your help forum, as always.

All I know is that they sometimes hit each other with their bombs. I'm sure collisions happened as well but to blow up a whole box if 2 collide, hmmm.

So long.We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

@ EStare: I have read up that several B-17 bombers were lost due to collisions with other planes of their group, or by getting hit by bombs that were dropped from higher flying planes.

Such incidents usually only happened when at least one of the participating planes wasn't at it's supposed position within the formation, or due to damage, or simply due to human errors or "bad luck".

@ darkhorizon11: Hanna Reitsch... my girlfriend told me a lot about her. To describe her (Hanna, not my girlfriend http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif ) in short, she was a brilliant and excellent pilot, she tested many prototype planes and set several world records, as well as surviving some flight accidents.
However, she was relatively naive, and for some strange reason, totally believed in Hitler's cause and regime.

I own a Time Life video series called WW2 Aces.In the into, there's footage of a B-24 being hit by a bomb dropped from another plane above.
The footage is being takenby another plane just above and to the left of the doomed bomber.
The bomb hits the plane right beside the cockpit.Right where the wing meets the fusalage. As the wing breaks off,it kinda folds back towards the fusalage.
As this happens, you can actually see the props from the engine closest to the fusalage carve their way into the cockpit before the plane drops out of sight.
This is absoloutely incredible footage.Watching it in slow-motion makes it even more dramatic.
For me,seeing thatfootage really drove home the gruesomeness and brutality of air combat.
