View Full Version : If skins turned off on server, does it matter what the individual does?

So many of the servers that I like to fly have skindownloading turned off. This means that no matter what all the individual players do, they will only see stock skins on others. But frequently, these same servers also tell you to use "default skins". That begs the question: Does flying with a custom skin in this situation cause _any_ skin loading lag beyond what would happen normally with a default skin?

I would think that it would make no difference, but then why would all these experienced folk (I.e., those that run these great servers) say "default skins only"?

If the host has skin d/l off, none of the players online will see your custom skin.
You will be able to see your own custom skin though - if you use it and if you have skin d/l on http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
This skin will record in (It's IN the file and will show on any system when played http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif ) nettrack files (.ntrk) which can be made by assigning a key under "Controls" section for "Quick Record"
They will be named Quick####.ntrk in the "Records" folder under FB http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Setting skin d/l on does not harm the game nor cause lag - it is "smeared-out" over time, it DOES however produce a lot of traffic http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif 1024x1024x3 bytes per skin http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif beter use 512x512 size bitmaps for custom skins online ...

Question: Did you back-up your files?
Answer: I didn't know they had a reverse...

Lil_labbit-

Thanks for the reply.

But you stated:

From the answers I got in Oleg's RR, methinks you are wrong. See http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?a=tpc&s=400102&f=63110913&m=730109685&r=864109095#864109095

To highlight, Crazy Ivan said:

Since 1024 skins were introduced skin download should be off, simply because you cannot control what other people do. Latest patches had another addition to skin download option, now with disabling skin download pilots skin download and regiments download is disabled as well.
