I recently bought a new digital camera, a 5 Megapixel Minolta Dimage 7Hi. Whilst I love the camera to bits I have been somewhat disapointed by the 'noise' in the images, especially as the ISO setting goes up (even at 200 it is bad).

After a bit of a hunt around I have found a superp program called 'Neat Image' ( http://www.neatimage.com ) that literally kills noise /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Here is a comparison image, before (raw from th camera) vs. 'Neat Imaged'. (original is on the left)

http://zert0.net/upload/1063240057.jpg

The full size (2560 x 1920) images look great once they have the noise sorted out, it completely transforms them, here is a smaller version of the full image:

Thanks for the link Bader. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I just got my Minolta Dimage S414 (4MP, 4X optical zoom) three months ago and am completely happy with it. There is some noise over ISO 200, but I hope to use my camera for long exposures (astrophotography and lightning), though at ISO 400 with a couple seconds of exposure there is a huge amount of noise.

Here is a 1:1 size crop of a 4 megapixel pic showing my results with NeatImage:

4 seconds @ f3.6, ISO 400

Not bad at all, and this is an extreme case given the situation!

Man, Minolta here also, Dimage S414...I almost gave back the camera to the store after the first shots in low light indoor...
I am gonna give it a shot to see if this program can improve it.

PS ICAG_Bader...any news about my plea for those pictures?http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

What are the limitations of the demo version? I'd like to give this a try.

Thanks,

Basically no 48 Bit RGB.

'Home' version can input but not output 48 Bit.

Unlimited queue length on pro and Photoshop Plugin included.

More at: http://www.neatimage.com/featuremap.html

Looks like a very good program, nice find!

I have a Canon A70. Even at ISO 100 noise can be a problem with this camera - especially at night. I'm surprised you've decided to post this here. Many, many thanks.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

So impressed I bought the pro+ version

55.28 well spent when you have a Minolta film scanner, HP flat bed and Sony Mavicka.

Suspect most usage will be helping my father out with his Digital images (he is a retired RAF Photo Engineer with a penchant for technology) from his Sony.

Wonderering how well it will work on screenies from FB /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

glad you like it chaps - I posted it here because I know a lot of you will have digital cameras but, like me, be somewhat frustrated at the noise levels. Neat Image turns my camera into something special /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Lol Bader thats my old Squadron (20 Sqdn) on the Jumping Bean.

Still have my badges etc, except they were slightly different /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif the sh*tehawk on the badge carrying the Sword has the Sword replaced with a Corkscrew over a slice of lemon and the Squadron motto was replaced with "all bitter and twisted" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif OH and we had Jaguars in those days /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

In case you don't know what one looks like, this is the Jag T Bird I went to do Aerobatics in one over Gibralter for an hour or so /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif ...

ahhh reminising now of my time at RAF Bruggen in Germany sigh, now look what you have done /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

Thanks for the tip!!
A great program and I am just using the free version now.

I tried it on a couple of photos that I had taken on standard film and also had processed to a CD-rom.
The examples below are before and after using Neat Image.
The picture that I converted was first reduced to a .jpg of only 28.5Kb to use as a background screen on my pc but had a lot of "noise" in it. This program cleaned it up really nice!

I hope the links show up ok.
