I know the Soviets got their hands on a couple P-38's during Operation Frantic...mostly those planes that they could repaire themselves. Were the Soviets able to evaluate them? Is there any Soviet data? Or, did they have the same experience the Italians had?

Well, Capitano Angelo Tondi used a captured one to shoot down a B-17. Then they ran out of spare parts and scrapped it, or gave it to the Luftwaffe...

The Soviets got two P-38's for eval in lend-lease. They used then for recon only. This is data I got from Oleg. We dont know if they liked them or not, but I dont think the US were going to send over any more.

Operation Frantic involved Allied aircraft based in Britain, Italy, and Africa. They would bomb German targets then instead of turning around would continue on to Soviet Airbases. They would land, re-arm, and refuel then take-off again and bomb targets in Germany on the way back. A shuttle bombing operation.

I had seen a couple references getting obtaining battle damaged aircraft that allied forces had left in the Soviet Union. IIRC from what I read, they repaired these planes and fought them. P-38's were specifically mentioned but not more than a couple or so. I'll try and find the source again.

Yeah, the Italians got P-38 but it didn't like the low-grade gas they fed it, nor did they have spare parts. It basically managed the one or two sorties (taking out that B-17) and that was it. Also, the Luftwaffe did capture one or more.
