What I always wanted to know is what fighterpilots did when they were out of ammo long before reaching their actuel target? Went back or flying along?

Urine is actually a rather good substitute
for ammo http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
And then we have the flare gun, the ash tray,
your boots, your parachute to drop at people
on your six, etc,etc....

Well, I know that in the USAAAC/USAAF, on escort duty, they tried to eliminate the problem of dropped fuel tanks and using up ammo before the escorts were 'on station' by having something called an 'outlaw' flight. The outlaw flight would engage hostiles so that the escort planes could retain their fuel and full ammo load for the actual escort duty.

If you were on say, a fighter sweep over Caen, I would guess you were not supposed to engae other enemies except in self defense, until you reached the mission area. If you used up your ammo, you'd go home. If one menber of a two plane section used up ammo and the other didn't, both would have to go I suppose, because a single plane out of ammo is a sitting duck. If it were impossible to complete a mission, I see no reason that the flight would continue to fly the mission route.

Well, from what I've read, real life wasn't like say, a dogfight server. Often, no enemy contact was met on flights. When resistance was met, I haven't read too often of always having a fight to the death, spending all ammo and life on getting a kill. Most often, it was hit when you can, and get to safety it seems.

In RL there was a lot more teamwork than you'll ever see on a DF server. I've read many stories about wingmen out of ammo who would make bluff firing passes on the enemy to save his buddy's tail.
