View Full Version : OT: What kind of, if any, 1st person shooters do you play?

I realize most IL2 fans, and sim enthusiasts in general, who post on these boards are typically more mature and tend to get really involved in this game. Being that as it may, I am curious if any of you play other games on a regular basis in addition to IL2, more specifically, 1st person shooters. Which games do you play and what is your favorite type (ie. arcadish vs. "realistic")?

I have been playing FPSs for years and only recently introduced to IL2. Now that I am getting into the meat of this game (and growing older, mind you), I find myself really gravitating towards "realistic" shooters as well!

Sound off and let me know your experiences. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I play Americas Army, Call of Duty, Veitcong, Ghost recon, Medal of Honor, Battlefeild 1942.

It just depends on who is around to play with and what they have installed.

I used to wear out the MOH stuff, and GR but certain things in them both make me tore of them soon if it turns into a quake atmosphere. Least favorite of them all though is Battlefield 1942 I personaly think the guns are junk they have too much recoil time. I can shoot these weapons quicker and more accurate in real life.

COD I have only played single player no one I have in my circle has it yet. Vietkong is a pretty decent game but I have a hard time seing my enemy in the jungle http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

All of them are nothing more than a short break from IL2. When I get into a slump I move over to these for a spell.

I like to play OFP, mostly I set up a scenario with a couple pieces of armour, or platoons and then see whose gonna win.
Battlefield also is fun. I'm not familiar with other first person shooters like Farcry

I used to play Day of Defeat constantly; I was even a regular on the forums. But I lost interest in it sometime last year, about the same time I started playing FB.

I also have Max Payne and love it, although it's been a while since I have fired it up.

Kozhedub: In combat potential, the Yak-3, La-7 and La-9 fighters were indisputably superior to the Bf-109s and Fw-190s. But, as they say, no matter how good the violin may be, much depends on the violinist. I always felt respect for an enemy pilot whose plane I failed to down.

Ghost Recon and FarCry. I like 'em because I can get in a few minutes of mayhem when I don't have time for a full-blown flight mission. Unfortunately, I am bothered sometimes by motion sickness when I play FPS games. Its strange, sometimes I can play for 2 hours no problem, other times after 15 minutes I start to feel woozy. Thankfully no problem with that in flight sims, although I have been leery of trying trackIR for that reason.

OFP is the king of the hill!

Then I played Ghost Recon (nice but could be much more) and Vietcong (great). Both Hidden & Dangerous are on my hard drive waiting for their turn, and I know they'll be as good.

America's Army looks interesting.
Raven Shield and Splinter Cell are waiting but, I don't expect much.
Tried MoH and CoD but, not my beef. Towards the more aecadish I enjoied Mafia (very much) and Max Payne, and am experimenting Far Cry (real arcade, but real good).

Cheers!

Wow, nobody's mentioned Red Orchestra yet? Eastern Front WWII mod for Unreal 2004, the latest version just came out last week. Iron sights, full ballistics, realism-heavy, Germans vs. Russians, historical maps, great community. I'd call it the Il2 of WWII shooters. http://www.redorchestramod.com. I got UT2004 Just for this mod and it's well worth it.

Do not buy Soldner. You will regret it.

Just try the demo. It has to be the worst fps I've ever seen. It's a great idea with very poor execution.

The demo was so bad I don't think anything short of paying me would get me to pick up
the full game.

I agree, Soldner did not really grab me either.

I don't play FPS so much these days, the last one I bought was Halo PC, and the last one I played alot was Planetside.

The Painkiller demo's were fun though, nice "Old School" style stuff.

I graduated from consoles to PC gaming with the original Unreal Tournament. Shortly thereafter, I discovered Half-life and Day of Defeat. I played DoD almost exclusively with two of my best friends for the better part of 2 years. Since then we have been wandering aimlessly, playing this game and that (RTCW, BF1942 and mods, Raven Shield, Hidden and Dangerous 2, CoD).

Currently, we are mostly playing BF:Vietnam. One of my buddies and I have rigs with enough power to push Far Cry so we played that through... it is great single player, but thus far has not been able to hold my attention with its multiplayer aspects. We have also been playing the Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow multiplayer which is quite good and very innovative in a market not known for much innovation.

I notice a lot of people responding with Ghost Recon: I tried it a LONG time ago and could not get into it. Last year, I really got into Raven Shield... perhaps I should revisit GR.

Of course we do, it's the only killing with blood there is.....

Operation Flashpoint - dated, but the best, best FPS experience ever
Battlefield Vietnam - great online play
Medal of Honor - Fantastic series again, great online play
Chrome - wicked fun
Deus X - the first one was super
Soldier of Fortune - again 1st one was great - still remember blowing a guys arm or leg off with a shotgun - doesn't get any better than that.
Unreal Tournament - fun, but gets old
Red Faction - Wow, once again 1st one was great - online was wicked until the Mods started coming out. 2nd RF didn't even have online play - WTF?
Those are just some that I've played, COD was super, but way to friggin short and FARCRY is the most gorgeous of all of them. Gameplay is 5 stars out of 5 stars as well - pick that one up if you haven't already.

Anyone know how Painkiller is?

FarCry (beautiful graphics, good AI)

Thief series (more a first person sculker than shooter, and the new one just came out)

Hitman 2 and Contracts (can be played steathy or messy. Contracts rehashes some levels from the original, but I never played that, so it's new to me)

Max Payne 2 (good old-fashioned mindless violence, but I'm having a hard time getting into it. Too much twitch factor, I guess.)

Deus Ex series (first was probably better than the second, but both have good, flexible gameplay)

Half Life (I believe I've played just about every mod)
&
Serious Sam. Seriously. It's seriously mindless and pointless kill, kill, kill. A laugh a minute.
I'm waiting for Half Life 2 along with Serious Sam 3.
Other than that all I've played in the last year is IL-2/FB/AEP.

My faves are H&D series and Thief series which both tend to reward the slow careful sniper approach equally as well as or better than the mad, gung ho, guns blazing redneck.

Red Orchrestra looks fantastic. One thing that gets me is the videos they show of the empty shells being ejected from all guns.

First of all, the shell is huge! The model of the shell needs to be shrunk down a bit.

Secondly, the ejection occurs at the wrong time on the bolt action guns. The bullet ejects right after firing before the animation even shows the player pulling the bolt back.

Other than that the mod looks great and is the only reason I would consider getting UT2004.

Battlefield 1942 & Desert Combat Mod
I really like the online gameplay of the BF:1942 series. SO many maps and roles/vehicles that you can pretty much recreate any scene in any war movie you want. Heck, sometimes after watching the news about the Iraq War I just kick some Iraqi butt. So I load up DC with say the Basrahs Edge map and I grab the SAW and start laying waste. The AI is pretty dumb but online everyone is a human and it much more challenging. I admit the plane FM are arcade but with my FB flying experience I rule. The helecopters are just as challenging to fly as in the EECH sims but with a better CAS role. Cool thing when you hit the silk is that you can join the battle as infantry instead of running and hiding your face. Graphics and weapon models are not the best but participating in a battle with real objectives from land, sea, or air where everything is human controlled is totally immersive and satisfying.

Call of Duty graphics and gameplay intensity are awesome.

I still havn't played the campaigns or all the single missions, that shows the scope of OFP's editor! I have never played another game that delivers such freedom of choice and talk about 3rd party addons!, I can't wait for OFP2 (and BoB)

I don't mind a bit of UT2004 either, its always fun to repetedly snipe players until they hunt you down in vengeancehttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Man, they really hate me in that game http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

Operation Flashpoint is still probably the best, when you consider all the mods and downloads available, like new troop types, vehicles, islands (maps), missions, editor objects. Wow is there a lot of stuff out there for OFP.

I haven't been into it since last summer, when my old PC melted down, and I lost all my missions, downloads, islands...sigh...

There are some killer WWII mods for OFP.

Just one no one else has mentioned yet: Savage.

The demo can be found here; http://www.s2games.com/

The community is pretty small, and tends to be l33t alas, but the game's quite interesting... it's a mix of FPS and RTS. One person takes the role of the commander, who orders buildings built and resources mined, and who researches new weapons... the players act as some of his units, can be sent orders, but mostly they just run around ignoring the commander, helping build the buildings occasionally, but usually just fragging the other side.

Opearation flashpoint, Need for Speed Underground and Medal of Honor.

Why is OFP is so good cause its a simulation too, Medal of Honor is an arcade game, but Flashpoint will get you as close to real ground combat as no game will. Flashpoint too has mission editor, plus you can make your own addons for it. They use a simulation that uses Flashpoint gaming engine in US Marines and Army it caleed VBS1 (virtual batttlefield system one) its made by the same developers, and the are chechs (chekoslovakians).

Lol Eauropeans start to make good computer games, OPF was the first game that Bohemia Interactive developed. Can't wait till Flash 2 camose out the same time as BoB.

anyone who likes the H&D series would love Red Orchestra.

if youve got UT2004 go check this mod out.

if you dont have UT2004 i know plenty of people who bought it only for this mod.

RtCW is *not* a fun romp, it is a cataclysmic struggle b/w good (me), and evil (them).

Never bothered with any other FPS.

The only games on my HD are FB and RtCW.

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif will stick to RTCW for now then - are there any mods etc for it? (not finished yet but for when I do...)

A friend mentioned a while ago that there is a multiplayer mod with bots... will press him for more information.

No thanks, you can keep your FPS games and I'll keep flying IL-2.

Johann

According to your own post you haven't tried any FPS games - just some **** remake of a great trilogy, heck have you tried the Harry Potter demo also? lol The Matrix was more of this movie to game ****, these do not count as FPS!!!!!

I can't believe I left Max Payne 1 & 2 out of my first post.....both excellent. Stalker looks to be cool also - IF it ever gets released. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

All you guys that play COD get on the
"AUSTIN-COD Retrieve" Server Now!!!

It's run by a professional group of guys and gals who also run their own website.

There is no clanstacking, cursing, and you get auto-booted for to many PK's, although you can forgive someone if it was accidental and they'll stay in. Not to mention they are all a very a mature group of people.

I'm not really into the Arcadish FPS type of games but this server made the difference and its all I play right now. Ton's of fun.

Red Orchestra - I thought that was a mod for UT2003? is that differnet from the mod for UT2004?

Am considering buy UT and mod or Call of Duty.

Have played COD at my brothers house and it was pretty cool - especially on-line.

Any thoughts on why one better than the other?

Thanks!

I haven't read it all, but you guys might like to know that VBS1 (Virtual Batttlefield System One) is available for the consumer market now! http://virtualbattlespace.com/store

One further comment on OFP: it is the IL-2 of the tactical shooters! Extreme realism, no frills.
They also came out about the same time, and I own them both since the ol'good demo times...

Also, who mentioned the European games getting better? They are the best ones by far nowadays, especially for what realism is concerned, and especially the ones coming from the Eastern Europe (high technical background, low salaries): IL-2/FB, LOMAC, H&D/H&D2, VC, Mafia, OFP/OFP2, Stalker (I believe) and much more (MP/MP2 are Finnish and the cutting edge out now technology-wise FC, is German)...

Operation Flashpoint- Still can't be beat realism wise, UNBELEIVABLE modding community.

Hidden and Dangerous 2- Despite idiotic AI, great atmosphere and authentic feel.

Medal of Honor: Breakthrough- LOVE the atmosphere and score, great for North Africa/Med. fans.

Raven Shield- Awesome online play, very realistic. Love the weapons, despite strange recoil on some guns.

Hitman: Contracts- Can't stop playing. Dark, gritty atmosphere and total non-linearity, very violent.

Thinking of getting FarCry as soon as I upgrade my machine. I also play alot of racing games, and I'm (impatiently) waiting for Gran Turismo 4 and Driver 3.
