Just get the movie PEARL HARBOR and you can freeze frame various parts of it. Also, the official site has photos of the pilots, etc.

Yes, he was an excellent pilot who's skills were put to use testing new aircraft during the latter part of the war. One of his more famous exploits was landing on a Chinese airfield along with 3 other Zero pilots, vandalizing enemy aircraft, attempting to set the base command post on fire and then taking off again in a hail of bullets. But he wasn't done yet. He then attacked 3 CAF fighters single-handedly, downing 2 of them.

Awesome, awesome book Samurai by Saburo Sakai. Great read.

Saburo Sakai is without a doubt my all-time favorite Japanese fighter ace. If for nothing else, for the fact that he survived being shot in the head by a .50 cal from a TBM Avenger ball gunner (mistook a flight of Avengers for a flight of dive bombers), then flew several hours to get back to his base in a badly damaged plane - as if being blinded in one eye and graying out wasn't enough!

I definitely recommend his book. VERY good read. Keep in mind that Martin Caidin actually did the writing, not Sakai, and that there is quite a bit of controversy concerning the accuracy of some of the kill counts and combat engagements in the Caidin translation. Sakai himself was happy to correct Caidin's work.

Saburo Sakai died in 2002, a warrior to the end.

Saburo Sakai

This is from a Japanese language site dedicated to IJN aces. A page is devoted to each pilot. I can't read too much but it seems to have everthing except a swimsuit section.

Just kidding! A lot of these photos have never been published in the west though.

http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/ha/zeke/aka.html

Speaking of badasses. Top of the list is Sadaaki Akamatsu. Definately a bit of a mans man.
Saburo Sakai claims that Akamatsu had an alarm system rigged in the local Geisha house near his airfield (Atsugi, I think) and would often answer a call to scramble still in kimono and clogs.
http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/ha/zeke/aka3.JPG
Apparently his drunkeness, brawling and other antics got him busted in rank several times but his superiors kept him around for his exceptional piloting skill (Flying the J2M3 Raiden interceptor he gained a reputation as a Mustang killer - his favorite prey).

Another interesting one is rare shot Tetsu Iwamoto (80+ victories) clowning around.

Looking forward to your next work - Enjoy!

Fantastic pictures!
What really strikes me is their youth. Every one of them looks like teenage boys, except that badass-Japanese-Adolf Galland-guy!
